What is the silliest thing you've heard someone say in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Today someone told me that Tony Stark didn't know how bad his weapons selling was. His opening scene is him selling a fucking Doomsday Missile.

That Harry Potter was suicidal. Ugh. Sacrificing yourself for others is not the same as being suicidal. Harry didn't want to die.

That house elves being slaves is good and necessary for them.

That Tolkien is a light and fluffy writer. That he doesn't kill off characters.

I don't get it at all. I've heard/read many people say it, but it is stupid every single time. Like, even the Hobbit isn't all light and fluffy. People die. LOTR certainly isn't either. So even if you know nothing of his writing outside of those, it is still a ridiculous thing to say.

My feelings on house elves are fairly complex. I definitely wouldn't call it good for them, but I really get the feeling most house elves are like house pets. Dogs especially. So at least at the time of the Harry Potter books, most house elves would feel their positions are necessary.

If you dumped a dog in the forest who has lived with people all its life, chances are it won't survive if someone else doesn't come along to take care of it. I think most house elves are, for a lack of a better term, bred for loyalty like humans domesticated animals. So while you might have the occasional oddball like Dobby, the majority of house elves wouldn't know what to do if you gave them freedom (like Winky or Kreacher).

Just my two cents.

Except house elves are sapient. So I don't think that comparison works at all.

So like... house elves being slaves is good and necessary for them

the problem is JKR making the choice to write a fictional race of whom it is largely true that being a slave is good and necessary for them. but, like, that is what she actually did

Re: What is the silliest thing you've heard someone say in fandom?

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-06-22 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
No, actually she didn't. She wrote about a species being brainwashed into thinking slavery is good and necessary for them. Doesn't mean it is actually true, as seen by Dobby and even Kreature.

With you on the House Elves. They're based on brownies from folklore (same thing that inspired the Girl Scouts Brownies) which are just like these helpful little spirits/fairies that clean your house at night as a favor and while they don't like to receive "payment", they will happily accept gifts. I always felt like the wizards somewhere along the way took advantage of their kindness and enslaved them. I feel like JKR could have gone into their history a bit more...or at all...but also readers who justify their enslavement need to learn how to read between the lines.

I'm more disturbed by the idea of someone who thinks only men have fantasies and want sex and yet still thinks sex is okay? Like, if women didn't want sex, why would sex be fine and dandy?

this moron actually thought women could have sex whenever we wanted and didn't fantasize about it. how does anyone survive to adulthood being that stupid?

Someone once asked Cleolinda to tag for RDJ, because they were "triggered" by pictures of him.

Yes. And also, liking a villain either means a. you think what they've done is totally fine and are therefore evil yourself or b. you are woobifying them if you mention any positive traits at all.

Someone who considered herself the "fictionkin" of a character from a 60s TV show, mentioned how CANON! depictions of that character in middle-age made her uncomfortable, because, as the "IRL!Character-Name" she "knew" that she'd died earlier than that. Several layers of WTF going on with that.
