Okay.

I can't tell.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that the part where he's killing off half her people for stupid reasons or the part where he's killing the her, the woman he loves as a daughter, for stupid reasons?

Re: I can't tell.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-13 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"loves as a daughter" has always seemed pretty questionable to me, lbr

It's just after he murdered her, yeah, and the Soul Stone (it's super vague but I think the stone itself???) talks to him, or maybe he just hallucinates or w/e.

Your opinions are bad and you should feel bad

Ha yep.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh noo, the big purple avatar of every lowkey racist dudebro who's never taken a resource management class but totally knows how to solve overpopulation murdered Gamora and it made him sad.

Oh Dear.

This isn't the first time I've seen this sort of opinion. He chose to continue doing the things that led to this particular scene. Certain elements (of fandom, even perhaps the directors/writers!) keep telling me I should feel sympathy for Thanos but I really, really don't. The only thing that tempers my rage over Gamora somewhat is that I'm 99% she will be like the dusted people and won't remain dead (unlike Loki and Heimdall...which as a Thor trilogy fan makes me mad for other reasons) but it was still horrible to watch. And I agree with her "this isn't love" - he loved the idea of her as an heir/weapon. Then there's the fact that his torture of Nebula was fucking horrific for a 12A/PG-13 certificate film.

He's a cool villain but in my mind he's NOT sympathetic. That's ok, a villain doesn't always need to be sympathetic to be an effective bad guy.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Your last line is on point.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
And I agree about the torture. It really unsettled me.

I'm with you on Loki and Heimdall. IMO they handled both of their deaths (particularly Loki) in such a terrible, badly written way that I can't join the bandwagon and say it's a 'great' film. Had great moments, certainly. I also had no sympathy for Thanos. As a villain, he was fine. Again, I didn't think he was the amazing villain everyone is saying he was.

This secret is reminding me the issues I had with this film in general (including the humour, which didn't work for me most of the time with the dark tone, the fact that the pacing was all over the place and that the villain had such a stupid idea that was easily fixed by adding more resources, not less people. I understand he was an extremist, but didn't make his idea any less dumb and therefore him look less intimidating).
It's lonely out here, seeming to be the only one who didn't think Infinity War wasn't a masterpiece, or even wasn't particularly good.

You're not alone. There were some great moments, but overall I was disappointed.

What gets me most about how stupid his idea was is that it wasn't that long ago that Earth's population was half what it is now. And after killing off half the population, it won't take long for it to go right back to where it was. So his idea doesn't even accomplish what he wants it to. It's so stupid I can't believe anyone would base anything on it. And it annoys me to no end.

If it helps in the comics his main motivation for killing half the population is so he can attract/seduce Death.

Overall I really loved it, it's a great film but I have my reservations and I feel like I can't say much of them without being accused of being a bitter Loki fan. I mean I AM a little bitter tbh, though I knew he was the obvious choice for an early death because logically there wasn't much room for him. Same with Heimdall. But the opening scene just felt too much like trying to get rid of them "because" and I already feel like the Thor films are the ugly stepsister of the MCU so to have the good feeling at the end of Ragnarok and then immediately get it taken away in the first five minutes of the next film...yes of course I'm a little upset! Plus Loki's death was so...unreasonably graphic? The only other points where I felt like it was pushing it a bit far for this kind of film were Nebula's torture and Vision dying brutally twice in a couple of minutes.

I think I would hold off truly calling IW a masterpiece personally because it's part one of a two part story. Until I know the full picture I'm in a sort of limbo right now.

I don't feel much of any way over the dusted characters because I know they'll all be back, the deaths that are gonna stick will be in part 2.

But I absolutely don't feel any sympathy for Thanos, he did all of this so why on earth would I feel bad for him when he's the reason the daughter he 'loved' is dead? The only one I felt sorry for in that situation was Gamora.

Seriously, how the hell do people feel more for him than Gamora? I do think he loved her, but in a way that should just be interpreted as "abusers and killers can love people and still be terrible and it doesn't have to make them sympathetic because there's nothing inherently virtuous about loving anyone."

Yeah his love for her is... screwed up to say the least. Which is compelling to me to an extent, but not to the point where I feel like he's the one that got the raw end of the deal in this situation.

Oh no your daughter is dead, well you're the one who killed her so fuck you Thanos, be sad you giant twat-waffle.

Careful, OP!

I'm side eyeing you for only feeling sympathy for Thanos. I felt a bit of sympathy for him. A tiny little bit. He's a terrible person who did terrible things. But I think he did love her, and for that I do feel that tiny bit of sympathy. But everyone else lost so much more, and he was the cause of that as well as his own loss. So they all get the greater amount of sympathy.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-14 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's weird, but you do you. For me, Thanos took up too much screen time - they spent so much time showing us how many feelings he has and how sorry he supposedly is that he "has" to kill Gomorra, but it never really added up to anything. His "love" for her is random (why her, when he's so terribly cruel to Nebula), his motivation - totally unclear. Is he seeing himself as a saviour of humanity? If yes, than we needed a bit more about the glory of the "perfect" future or him feeling connected to somebody except Gomorra/anybody really, or something about him caring about people or the conditions they live in...well, SOMETHING. because what we got was mostly like - I want to destroy half the world, because I think it's a good idea, because once I had this idea on my own planet and nobody accepted it and everybody (?) died. So it seems like he's doing it just to prove that the dead people from his home planet were wrong to refuse his plan, which is rather crazy, but treated as some sort of logical option that merits his resolve and "sacrifice" of Gomorra, when in fact it's as riddiculous as "I do it to get Death to date me".
