I mean, they haven't GIVEN Mary that accent. That's Saoirse's natural accent. I get your point but I thought that was kind of funny.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Saoirse Ronan is Irish/Irish-American, not Scottish.

She was from the 16th century so it's not like they were going to have an accurate accent regardless. Bit silly to take them to task for that.

In general, I think historical films should almost always prioritize a good story over strict accuracy.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah,if you want accuracy read a book about it or watch a BBC documentary.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would having the correct accent be detrimental to the story?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because we would have tremendous trouble understanding it.

EXACTLY. It's... really weird how some people are acting like you only have two choices, go full historical accuracy or do whatever you want no matter how anachronistic it is. There's a lot of middle ground, folks.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-23 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, as a medieval history MA. You're making a film for general audiences, within the constraints of good storytelling with a film medium - pacing, plotting, and a ~2 hour limit. People seem to be stuck on the French accent thing when an early modern French accent doesn't even sound like a modern French accent. And who knows what her English sounded like? Give her the Scottish accent, whatever, that will hardly be the most inaccurate part of this movie - and that's probably okay. The Scottish accent vs the English accent obviously give some uniformity to the two sides involved in the conflict here. Staying true to the essence of the conflict is really more important than the details, so long as it tells a well-crafted story. Real history would be boring, convoluted, and confusing to watch.

I'm just dreading this becoming Braveheart 2.0, with the whole Scottish national pride derived from a hugely inaccurate film.

Honestly I don't care particularly for this time period or either of these two people. But the they both look incredibly hot in the pictures for the movie, so I'll probably give it a try just for that. I like Saoirse Ronan a lot.

I can forgive the accent thing because it wouldn't be the first time as I think people expect her to sound Scottish so productions like this are just going with that. I was actually reading something about this the other day that said we probably can't be certain if she sounded like we'd expect a French person to sound either.

I personally would be more bothered about meetings happening that didn't actually happen but even then I've come to accept historical fiction often has to spice up historical reality for the sake of drama. There are some things I find harder to forgive however, like 'The White Queen' having the Battle of Bosworth FIELD in a fucking wintery forest. In August.

So vent away. It's ok to be bothered by the things you're bothered by!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's the White Queen series based on Philippa Gregory's book, I'm not surprised. She's very much into taking a LOT of liberties with history. I don't mind most of it, but I didn't care for her version of Anne Boleyn at all and didn't think her version was more interesting than what actually happened.

Yup the very same! I tried reading some of the books because my mum has them, we're both interested in Richard III. I just couldn't keep going. I'm all for trying to be a little kinder to people who have traditionally been cast as the villains of history but her Richard III stanning got a bit much even for me.

I'm not sure the forest choice for the TV show was her though. Probably some producer or director thought it'd look good or atmospheric on screen but it ended up being ridiculous.

Scottish accent, or speaking Scots? Because it's a matter of record that Mary spoke Scots.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-23 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
The trailers show her speaking with a Scottish accent.

I've seen some stuff where Robbie is portrayed as showing Elizabeth with her hair falling out and all the damage from that terrible face whitening powder they used. So at least they are trying to be accurate on that route.

Also... that is not a thick accent. Not even remotely.

And I'm pretty sure Elizabeth visited Mary before she had her killed.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No, Mary begged for a meeting but Elizabeth refused. However, many plays/films/novels do have them meeting, so there's a long tradition of that.

Actually, I think Elizabeth and Mary never met face-to-face at all. Elizabeth refused to meet her.

I would think that part of the reason for using the face powder (and wigs) in the first place was because of contracting smallpox - she was left half bald and her face scarred. I can believe that the face powder was also detrimental, but I would guess that the ravages of small pox is at least part of what they are trying to show with her face. I wonder if they are going to try to show what went on with her teeth (severe tooth loss and decay), though.

Just looking at those pictures, am I the only one who wishes Saoirse Ronan would play a young Elizabeth?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! me too. I actually thought that it was the other way around, then did a double-take when I realized Saoirse wasn't playing Elizabeth I.

I am not super interested in the time period but I like those actresses and Jack Lowden is a cutie even out of a Spitfire, so I may see this. But I will avoid reading any real history immediately before or after seeing the movie because that would just confuse me!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-23 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've always found the assumption that Mary would have a French accent in English very odd. For example, we know Elizabeth was taught French from the cradle and would not expect her to speak it with an accent.

Even while she was living in France Mary was still Queens of Scots and got an extensive education, including about Scotland. She easily could have been taught English by a Scottish Tutor when she was still young, along with Gaelic and Latin. That kind of early intensive teaching can indeed make a child fluent.

So if anything I would think it most likely she spoke Scottish English learned from a Scottish tutor.
