What about fandom has surprised you, FS?

Just how hostile the Star Wars fandom has become has surprised me. It has always kind of been that way, but it used to be that I could find some happy places. These days, that's basically impossible.

[community profile] starwarsfruitbowl is a pretty nice place, and could use some new blood--- it's been fairly quiet. (Be the change I wish to see in my fandomspaces, I know....) And, yeah, I feel you on how awful the fandom has become... though on the other hand, in the annotated anniversary edition of Heir to the Empire Timothy Zahn mentions getting hate mail for including hot chocolate, among other things, so.

I never thought I'd find a highschool AU fic I would A., want to read, and B., actually like, but recently I did. Not that I'll be seeking them out now or anything, but I was very pleasantly surprised by how well written and sweet this fic was (and rated teens and up, so no smut whatsoever, another thing I'm not used to and thought I wouldn't like).

The fic in question (Allemande, a Kylux fic):

How the American Girl fandom is suddenly rallying together to get AG to stop using the new, cheap eyes. It seems like the fandom only joins together when there's a quality issue with the dolls, but spends the rest of the time being low-key catty to everyone that's enjoying dolls wrong.

how quickly the voltron fandom devolved into insanity, i mean that was truly impressive.

the part of the sherlock fandom who legit convinced themselves that all of s4 was fake and that the real season would air afterwards.

ngl, I kinda want links... like how could you honestly believe that? I'm convinced that 80% of the internet is trolling at this point.

Hi there, would you mind explaining this to me, I am not in that fandom and know little about it beyond the crazy shippers who believed the actual actors were in a romantic relationship.

The most recent series was not well received (among other things, Moriarty was revealed as not the big bad, but rather the dragon to Sherlock and Mycroft's even smarter sister, who we'd never heard of before), and some people simply can't believe it was merely a misfire...combine it with the generally conspiracy-theory-friendly fandom, and things get weird.

I don't think people believing the actors were together was ever much of a thing (at least not more of a thing than in any other fandom) although there were certainly people who did believe it.

A separate issue was a few particularly... interesting people believing that since they didn't like S4, or at least the last episode of it, that there would be a secret extra episode airing in the time slot the next week that would "fix" everything because TPTB wanted the audience to be like Sherlock and solve sneaky puzzles and only those who solved the case and figured it out would know to tune in the next week and... I don't know the whole logic, although I did read someone's explanation somewhere that "if you just follow the clues..." Yeah. But hey, you've got to give them props for originality. It's certainly different that the normal "I reject as canon this part I don't like" or just writing fic that makes things go your way that typically happens when fans are displeased (I mean, that happened too, along with some people not disliking the last ep, because not everyone in the fandom is crazy).

Heh, does this overlap with the people who claimed that there was a lost secret episode that "would explain everything and make all of S4 make sense" ?

sa.

yes! that's the same people, some of them were also hard-core 'johnlock conspiracy' nutters that added an extra level of hilarity to the whole thing. truly it was some good reading, best wank i've seen in a while.

I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but the fact that people are freaking out over some baseless rumor that Destiel's going to become canon in season fourteen really puzzles me.

you think they'd give up hoping at somepoint... i'm not sure if i admire the dedication or find it sad.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-02 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno either, but it makes me wonder what's gonna happen when the show eventually ends without Destiel becoming canon. Are they gonna start spinning conspiracy theories and saying there was a secret episode/season like the Johnlockers did?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-02 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
a part of me kind of hopes so tbh, it'd make for some amusing reading. but i mostly imagine that they'll be screaming about the writers queerbaiting them as per usual.

There's a season fourteen?

Re: What about fandom has surprised you, FS?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-02 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it's not out yet. The first episode's gonna air in October and people are convinced Destiel's gonna happen because of one vague, tee-hee type tweet.

Well this doesn't really surprise me, but someone in my fandom thought it was a good idea to go to a con and ask a popular voice actor what he thinks about a certain ship. Just... why do people keep insisting on doing this? Do not ask actors about ships, it's cringy and creepy. :/ And in the video you could tell he was getting more uncomfortable as the conversation went on, so I felt bad for him.

Re: What about fandom has surprised you, FS?

I have to keep reminding myself that not everyone A)grew up going to cons or B) interacted with older, more experienced fans (who told embarrassing cautionary tales of bad fan behavior) before ever getting into a situation where they could interact directly with an actor or showrunner. Depending on their fandom experience up until that point, they may have no idea that it isn't all about their ship and not everyone is on the same page there.

Also, not everyone is equally socially aware and adept. I've seen people on the verge of doing something embarrassing like asking an actor about a ship only to be stopped by their friends. Their friends knew better, so clearly it wasn't a problem with a whole peer group, but something in that person's head wasn't sending out the DANGER! ABORT! ABORT! signal like it should. It's not their fault, exactly.

How very, very horrible the adult side of fandoms for kid-friendly media can get... And how very badly they tend to miss the whole points of the shows.
