Maybe you can moderate comments?

+1

Then if they raise a stink about their comments not being posted OP can just play dumb and act like the comments never showed up in the moderation queue.

This sounds a lot like a commenter who would comment on many people's fics about a particular ship and then comment a rambling, nonsensical blurb of plot elements that had absolutely NOTHING to do with the fic. I feel your pain, OP.

Urgh, they sound frustrating. Maybe moderating comments will help. You don't have to like everyone who follows your work. Don't feel bad if you dislike someone who's annoying.

On one of my fics I had this reviewer who was kind of the opposite? I mean they hated this one canon character and all of their reviews would be finding some way to read her as the bad guy in situations. ("Man she's being bitchy when [other character] is just trying to be a good friend" No.. actually Other character is being passive aggressive as heck. I thought I made that fairly obvious) Even worse this person liked to give suggestions of scenes for my fic which really demonized the character in question and made other characters hate that character. It was really freaking annoying.

Thankfully they quit with that and quit following when I made it clear I wasn't going to bash the character they hated.

Maybe when some real harsh consequences come down on the character they'll get miffed and leave? If not, well....moderating comments sounds good. Or telling them in a reply that you disagree and why?

Is there any way you could PM this person and gently rebut them? "I'm really sorry that you're getting XYZ vibe from this fic. That’s not what I was aiming for at all." Or something to that effect.

This.

I've got a friend with the same kind of problem, oh man. It gets... so annoying just watching it happen to someone else's work, it must be so much more maddening when it's your own.

Delete the comments. AO3 gives you the power to do it, so use it. I personally have no issue with deleting comments on my work. Or at least maybe start changing the settings on your fics so that you can moderate the comments like others have suggested.

Yes. Offensive and far out comments that are more concerned with their own opinions than the fic they are commenting on, should be deleted. Their commenters can go and ramble somewhere else.

There's someone like that in my fandom too. If she's anything like mine, she's leaving similar comments on every other fanfic starring this character and everybody who frequents the fandom knows what she's like. Just ignore her. Her comments reflect on her, not you.

Do you reply or engage with this person at all? I feel the whole point of fanfic is being able to actually have conversation between authors and readers. Why not try responding with what you think and were trying to convey, if you aren't already? At the very least, then, other readers will realize that you don't agree/condone.

I don't agree with the suggestions to just delete the comments though. I've only done so once, when the commenter made what I felt to be personally offensive accusations about me and other readers that were barely relevant to the fic itself. Otherwise, I think that that kind of "policing" of your fic sends a bad vibe to other people who might read/comment and hear that you're "censoring" people who don't agree with your take.

I have someone kinda like that, who leaves long reviews, sometimes with crazy alternate scenarios (usually involving porn) that are amusing, but don't fit with the tone of my work -- or she'll criticize something she shouldn't. I mean, if I screw up, fine, call me on it, but when it's just your opinion and you go on and on about why what I did is WRONG (or you get CANON wrong, in your argument!), I get annoyed. I wouldn't mind so much if it was on AO3, because I could publicly defend myself, but it's on FFN, where I'd have to address it in a A/N on the next chapter, and that just feels... petty, or something. So then I just hope no one bothers to read long reviews and take her opinion as gospel.

Since hardly anyone comments on my work, though, I don't want her to stop. She notices things and compliments me on them when no one else does. Sounds like that's not the case with yours :( which sucks. If you can reply or PM, I'd go that route first and see how they respond, as others have suggested.

Speaking as a very frequent reader of A03 and in-frequent writer...I almost never read reviews. especially long wall o' text reviews. And I certainly don't hold obviously crazy reviewers against the *author*. And on the fics where I've gotten lots of comments, none of them seem to be aware of each other or chatting in the comments either. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

They are probably subscribing to you as an author and gets a message immediately after you post.

Ahhrgghh!!!
This is honestly one of my worst fears when commenting.

I used to give long-winded, all over the place reviews when I commented. I have a legitimate fear that I stopped one of my favourite fanfics from finishing because of my inability to contain myself correctly. I reviewed while reading for the longest time, because I didn't want to leave anything out... Times have changed, I guess you could say;;
I've seen writers disapprove of reviewers probably a hundred times before, and rightfully so, and I get it, some people seriously need to chill... So long as the ones who mean well are understood, despite the way they phrase themselves;;
