Why are we saying "supposed" moral issues?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
... frex, calling relationships where one is 18 and the other is 25 "pedophilia," and saying that anyone who ships it is vile and perverted and should diaf?

Because a lot of the time the antis are just talking out their ass and only an idiot would think there was a genuine moral issue at stake.

I've donated in the past, but don't feel so inclined when their progress bar thingie shows they've already raised more money than their goal. Like... okay, do you really need my $10? I know I should probably just donate anyway, because I love the site, but it irks me.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Seems fair. Don't fret about it, nonny - it's an optional donation, not a fee.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-01 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's completely fair you feel that way, but do keep in mind the goal was just the bare minimum for the server costs, not for everything that needs to be done for the site.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss the days when people were just YKINMK.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
God, me too.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
YKINMK and squicks need to be brought back.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, those were the good old days. :(

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so out of the loop, I don't know much about this business. I post on AO3 but my fandoms are like fandoms of 1 so I don't talk to anyone or anything. I just am eternally grateful that such a thing as AO3 exists so that I may share my creations with the world & find fic I'm interested in. Organising and policing such a site must be a mammoth task and god bless them all for their hard work - I can't believe there are dicks out there who oppose such an exceptional website.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm about to go make a donation to them as well, just because of the asshattery of the stupid antis.

They do realize that books and media have 'problematic' things in them too, right? Why aren't they burning a bunch of books? It's so dumb. Fuck antis.

This is a terrible analogy

Well, they probably would like to.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's almost like they can't so easily attempt to bully and control published authors as they can fic writers.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I still can’t get over the fact that dumbass antis tried to report ao3 to the fbi for child pornography. Do antis even realize that they devalue what actual child pornography is with their this fictional 37 year old man is vulnerable minor UWUUUU or a fictional 17 year old dating a 19 year old is now child porn!!!

Also they need to look up the legal definition of what counts as child porn lol. Fictional characters aren’t protected by the law wtf.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention the fact that the FBI is kind of incredibly busy with a bunch of genuinely significant and important investigations and cases right now. Yet these people honestly seem to think they'd take time out of their day to focus on looking into a fanfiction website's story content. That's...hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 01:43 am (UTC)(link)

AO3 has sexual content involving characters who actually are children

So how is this relevant at all to what we're talking about!!!

I love AO3 and post and read fic on there. I am 99% of the time YKINMK. In fact, I enjoy reading "darker" fics. Hurt-comfort (involving taking care of a person after rape) is my jam.
However, I have come across fics that have disturbed me.
Example one involving a sexual relationship between a twelve year old Loki and a mid-twenties Tony Stark (from what I read in the synopsis. I skimmed the fic because surely this can't be...? and yep it was what i thought it was- a sexual relationship between a child and and adult. I'm probably on a watchlist now for clicking into that trash!). There is YKINMK and then there is 'this is sick, why are people reading this?' (One person in the comments stated how wrong it was and a bunch of people jumped on them.) Also, fuck you writer for doing such a disservice to such awesome characters!
Again, there is YKINMK and the antis do go too far.
At the same time, there has to be a line drawn somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
So, to bring up two examples already listed in the thread (although I can come up with lots more, as I'm a librarian), do you think stories like It and Lolita should be allowed to be published because they contain underage sex? That story with a child and an adult might very well disturb a lot of people, but how is it different from published works that contain similar things? Are you for book banning? Where is your line as to what is allowed to exist? (Mine is that anything that is fictional / not involving real people is fine, even if I won't read it because it isn't for me.)

So you came upon a fic that had an accurate summary, a fic that you knew would disturb you, and you read it anyway?

The line that should have been drawn is you not reading something that would upset you.

i've been out of fandom for a while - who are the antis? are they an organized group?

some people: idk it's kinda gross that this website has legit pedophillic content on it, i'm just gonna keep my money to myself.

ao3 stans: OMG YOU'RE LITERALLY INFRINGING ON MY RIGHT TO ENJOY KIDDIE-FUCKING/RAPE-FIC IN PEACE, HOW DARE YOU, YOU'RE JUST LIKE NAZIS!!!!.

i mean, this is what you people sound like, it's just a website. who cares if people don't want to support it? jfc, it's not like it's a lot of them anyway and the site does not struggle to get donations. you're just mad people are judging your kinks, get a thicker skin.

I'm mostly interested in how you fandom days are done. Do you just find it a bit boring now? Do you still lurk? I've been reading fanfic since I was a teen and now I'm at the end of my twenties and I couldn't imagine a life without fanfic (though I don't have the time to read as many as when I was younger)
