Hooray! Post is up!

This is one of the reasons why I don't get that excited about Rowling's writing skills. She's a decent storyteller... which isn't quite the same thing. Her world building is shaky, she doesn't put much thought into the details beyond a fairly superficial "ooh, this is nifty!" sort of way and that's why some of it works and some of it doesn't.

I feel you, but... yeah, a lot of fanfic writers just don't like to do research. Not even a little bit. Especially not about things that might take the shine off whatever neat thing they want to include in their fic.

I'll take it even if it's just the setting and the vibe. The actual plot of Stoker's story isn't great tbh, but I want the gothiness and sexiness and terror.

Eh.

If one of your favorite books got made into an adaptation...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
... would you want them to stick to the book version pretty closely? Or do you like to see different interpretations of the canon?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I like the basic plot of the story, edited down a little for film.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate the plot of the original novel. I do dislike how much of it relies on Idiot Ball. But I think it's kind of difficult to adapt it for movies/TV because it's a little disjointed between the part in Transylvania and the rest of the story in England. And I think it's kind of well-worn at this point. The Coppola version, for example, generally follows the book plot fairly closely (even if you hate Keanu Reeves).

I was pretty happy with the weird universe they created out of Thomas Harris' Red Dragon when making Hannibal. It's nothing like the book at all and I am strangely a-okay!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Lol.

For me, I hate to say it, but since the original was animation and this one is animation, I kind of don't see the point, since I assume it'll be similar scene-by-scene. It'll just feel weird seeing the characters talk with the "wrong" voices, especially Young Simba and Adult Simba.

I guess Mufasa is still the same voice though :D

Ha, true though. Plus it's kind of funny that anyone would be shocked to find out the dude was a werewolf at Hogwarts with a name like that. Like, of course he's a fucking werewolf.

That was me when I was a college student - whether in class or during my campus job at the library.

But now I am a grownup with a salaried job, and my fic is kinkier than ever, and I...

oh who am I kidding, I still do it, but on my personal laptop when it isn't on a work internet connection because I'm paranoid.

Good news thread!

What is yours? Or what good news have you seen?

Re: If one of your favorite books got made into an adaptation...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think it can be really interesting to see different takes on the canon, actually.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's a Meaingful Name, like all Meaningful Names, and Harry Potter has them all over.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, naming your kid like that for no reason actually seems like something wizards would do

Re: Good news thread!

The Camp Fire is finally contained!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I guess counterpoint would be "Draco" Malfoy. Who isn't a dragon. But is a douchey little jerk, so I guess it was prophetic in its own way.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ironically the main trio has delightfully meaningless names. "Harry Potter" is such a fantastic and unassuming name, going by nothing but rhythmic satisfaction. Ron and Hermoine, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe that's why the Potter kids are all named like that, maybe bad names are required by wizard law

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Man, what is even shameful on that show? This is not a joke, I am genuinely curious.
