This usually does bother me but it doesn't with JJ. I think it makes sense because she is... you know... an FBI agent from the start, and because she left the team and then came back in a new role. It felt more well-established and organic because of that, as opposed to it just suddenly happening with no justification.

I don't watch CSI.

Yup. And also, Garcia isn't generally in the field, so it isn't like Criminal Minds has everyone going into the field. And, also, there was the whole issue with how the actress was forced out in the first place. They had to expand JJs role to get her back, and I'm happy they did.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
All of this. Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
AGREED, OP!

You also see this problem in superhero tv shows. No, not everyone has to end up in a damn cape to make the show interesting!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, it still bothers me with Fitz and Simmons on Agents of SHIELD, for example. The whole tagline of the show was that you don't have to be special to be a hero, or something. And now, quite frequently although not exclusively, the scientific geniuses are fighting and shooting instead of actually using their important talents and gifts.

Yes! This is one example that really does bug me. Fitz and Simmons were awesome the way they were, and they aren't being allowed to use their best skills anymore.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
SA - and when they do, it's just some bastardization of their skills (hey guys, Jemma's PhD in Biochem makes her the equivalent of a trained medical doctor!) or something really superficial and quick to move the "real" plot along. Also, the Framework opened up a lot of potentially interesting thoughts about the ethical use and pursuit of science and whatnot and they didn't explore that nearly as much as I wanted them to.

I will give the show SOME credit though:
A) It developed slowly over time and made sense, given the circumstances, that they would be forced to learn some of it.
B) They still aren't "naturals" or "experts" at it.
C) Most of the time there's a science-y reason for them to be on a mission, rather than everyone being hugely dumb and putting their people with actual skills at risk.

NCIS: New Orleans too with Sebastian basically doing 2 jobs now which is ridiculous. There is a need for specialists in jobs other than field work.

Never watched CSI, but that always did bug me with JJ. What she did before had a nice difference to it. Now it's... a big group of profilers. Do they really need that many in one group? I miss the days when their specialties were shown more.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't the most well-developed character before, but I felt it was more interesting to see her dealing with the cases as the team's liaison rather than watching her do so as just another field agent. I think it added something to her character that she was the one in charge of damage control, of controlling how the BAU is seen by the public, etc. It was actually a unique role so she brought something unique to the table, unlike field agent JJ who basically just brings "well, as a mother..."

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
IMO it's really difficult to trace how much of that is specific to JJ, and how much of it is just the inevitable way that characters change / decay over the course of a show?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
No you're right, it's definitely true of the characters in general. IMO in canon JJ was always about as interesting as watching paint dry (which she continued to be once she became a field agent), but I thought liaison!JJ had a more interesting dynamic with the rest of the team when it came to fics and what have you. Plus in general the show had so many field agents already that I feel it was inherently a boring choice to remove some of the variety in the roles the characters played.

Honestly, I found her a lot more boring before. I actually find it more interesting to see Garcia taking on parts of the liaison role. JJ wasn't really interesting to me until she came back. And they explained it well enough for me that the changes in her made sense.

Ugh, I hate that so much. I remember an episode where Morgan called her out on that ("Would you say that if you didn't have a kid?") and I almost cheered.

I didn't see anything wrong with either moving into fieldwork.

For Greg, he was shown as early as season 2 that he wanted to be in the field and there was build up to until he gained his proficiency in season 5. Considering how much of the show took place in the field, it's a little surprising they took so long once he became a regular. In the beginning, he was more of a supporting character, if a bigger part than the rest of the lab people. He was not regular cast (just recurring) until season 3. There were also plenty of lab people that stayed in those roles.

For JJ, when she 'left' it was supposedly for a job she couldn't really turn down and was a big deal, so it didn't feel wrong that she might have wanted something different than she had before.

There is nothing wrong with either of their original roles, but it's also not wrong for either character to want something different.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, he, at least, was a popular character. And when 90% of the show is gonna be field work and relating to it... It was the only way to give him more time on-screen.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think JJ is great in the field, and I would much rather have seen Hotch move out of the field to spend more time with his kid after his wife was killed. Also, she'd previously been shown to be field-trained and perfectly capable, so it wasn't like you get in superhero canons where suddenly everyone has to get out there or they're not relevant. I hate that.

I know right!
I always saw it like the coroner going out in the field;; Like forensics is extremely important- whenever I see them wandering away to do field work I just don't know what to think;;
