I 100% get you, I don't think she's the bee's knees, but the context is important here. She was basically one of the very first completely open lesbians in show business when she came out (or, at least, the first that was given any real publicity), and she did a lot of road paving with her shows. As a somewhat-older lesbian, I may not adore her as a personality, but I'm grateful for the work she's put in.

Yeah, Ellen absolutely deserves her status as an LGBT icon. Without her, who knows how much longer the movement would've taken? Her coming out was pretty extraordinary, and the fact that so many people do love her - straight and gay alike - did a lot for LGBT people.

Yeah. I totally understand and respect what a trailblazer she was you can respect that without also adoring her and watching her show all the time ect. I've had a few people be scandalized that I don't like Ellen. Especially my straight friends. Women who love women don't all sit around in flannel watching Ellen on repeat. Though, if that is your thing have a badass time doing so. Sadly she's just become lumped in with the stereotype and it is creating resentment in some. I'm more irritated than some but other queer friends get right snooty about it all.

I don't super love her or dislike her honestly, I appreciate her impact in media for LGBT individuals, but I don't like her show enough to watch more than the occasional youtube video here and there.

On a tangentially related note, I always get confused when I pop into a conversation about mlm because I have to wait for context to figure out if they're talking about LGBT stuff or multi-level marketing. I mean, if it's at work I can ASSUME it's multi-level marketing, but I don't KNOW it's multi-level marketing.

I don't like her because she's now mostly a safe part of the tv establishment. She's an older white lady who has made being a visible lesbian on tv more socially acceptable and mundane. While I have some admiration for the fact that she's been something of a pioneer, both as a comedian and a tv host, it's her whiteness that has given her that opportunity. Never forget that.

Getting a queer person who isn't a lesbian or isn't what's considered part of a gender binary, and/or - heavens to betsy - all that plus brown skinned? On television? That'd be something. Ellen is white, safe and cute.
