Hobbies

What are some hobbies that don't require creativity or being artistic?

Or what hobbies do you have?

For things that don't require creativity, I'd say anything based on physical activity that isn't dance, like hiking or canoeing or playing team sports (provided the sport doesn't require a not of tactical creativity on your part). Camping, birding, identifying trees or wildflowers, volunteering somewhere (e.g. dog-walker at an animal shelter), working out, raising a pet.

Also, I think things like coloring an adult coloring book or cooking following a recipe involve creativity but do not require a lot of creativity or artistic talent.

I don't consider reading, tv, or movies to be hobbies (unless you are a serious cinophile and not just a person who goes to movies sometimes, or you study a particular author or genre and not just read books) but they are still pastimes that can be enjoyed without creative skil.

My hobbies are cooking and baking, sewing and crochet (although I haven't done either in a while), organizing things in my new house, going to the gym, and fandom (although not so much recently).

can't beat reading, cooking, and gardening for low-art, low-creativity activities. seconding above anon on birding, hiking, astronomy, etc.

I'm super creative though so in addition to cooking, gardening, stargazing, and colleting, I also cosplay, make my own clothes, knit, write, and sometimes draw. I have too many hobbies actually.

Hiking. Geocaching. Just about any sport, really. Doing puzzles.

If working out is a turn off, you could just do stretches and work on your flexibility. It's free, it's good for you, you can do it while listening to music or watching tv, and your progress will be measurable over time.

I have this karaoke app on my phone and it's honestly pretty easy to spend an hour or two doing karaoke. I'm not a great singer, but I've definitely gotten better since using this app. And what I like is that once you get a recording you're reasonably happy with, you can save it. (The app I have is called Smule, but I'm sure there are others.) I guess you might consider karaoke artistic. I generally don't though.

Puzzles. The 1000-piece, put together a picture kind.

Also, number puzzles like sudoku, and/or crosswords. They're cheap, and again, you can measure your progress as you get better and are able to do more advanced puzzles.

Also, you could try drawing from sight. Like, pick an image from a magazine or something, and try to replicate it as well as you can. I guess that's a tiny bit artistic, but not very.

Bicycling, I guess. I like to get on my bike and go for a ride to clear my head. Baking can be creative, but I tend to just follow the recipe to make simple cookies and breads. I like to do these things in addition to writing and scrapbooking, and I’m learning how to do embroidery.

To add to the puzzles suggestion: If you have any music you've been meaning to check out for years, trying out new music while doing a puzzle is a great way of multi-tasking.

If I ever get around to actually listening to Radiohead, I tell you, it will be while doing a 1000 piece puzzle. :)

Mostly I read and play video games. (And listen to music of course.) The only hobby I have that requires creativity is writing, and I usually write fanfic which is different from writing originals. (I'm not putting down fanfic! But it's very different for me.)

Late, but... performing music on an amateur level doesn't actually require a lot of creativity or artistic skill, just practice. In a choir, you'll be given set parts to sing; in band, you'll follow the sheet music and need only modify your playing outside of that if the director specifically asks you to change something. In both of these, it's very unlikely that you'll be the only person performing the specific part.

I know you're not supposed to edit while you write, but I am very indecisive about my WIP's timeline and when my story begins. (It matters.) Should I just force myself to keep going? Or should I take a step back from it until I figure that out?

On balance, I'd say it was a good year for me because I bought a house (a process that took up nearly the whole year) but absolutely nothing else in my life changed and I didn't do anything else new or out of the ordinary. The house isn't even much different than the appartment I was living in previously. Kind of a boring year, really.

i mean, not actually bad - if anything it's been the very definition of average; i've still got a job, and a roof, and my health, etc - but ultimately my failure to get on with any of the things i actually need to get on with in my life has to be regarded as a bad thing

Pretty good year. My loved ones and I are all relatively healthy and financially secure. Got my (paid for) car totalled by a stupid teenager, but I also had two wonderful vacations. Work was tolerable.

I certainly could have done more this year. After 40, they really start to become a blur.

Overall bad. Didn't get any of the jobs I wanted, an internet friend of over 6 years just disappeared on me (I fear something has happened to her) and my cat died on my birthday two weeks ago.

Only good thing was a vacation in Venice.

Bit shit, tbh
My cat had to be put down a few months back, and we just put down my dog this Friday past

Also my doctor (or their office, I'm not sure who to blame here) is really shit at getting in touch when they say they will, so I keep getting sent for test, then waiting weeks and weeks for the doctor to contact me about the results, when *they* get the results within 48 hours :(

At Christmas I was given 300 dollars worth of cash and gift cards from my family, as did my fiancée. Well apparently mine never made it home - they had both been left in cards in envelopes, but mine isn’t with the rest of our Christmas things, or in the car, or anywhere. It’s not at my brother’s house, who hosted Christmas, and no one else has seen it with their stuff. I have no idea what could have happened - dropped outside while packing or unpacking? Accidentally thrown away? I thought they got packed and I am so upset with myself for just losing 300 dollars. I really needed the money too.

So, what fuck ups have you done? Please wallow with me.
