132 - Ah, ah, hello! Agreed! There is a particular Naruto fanfiction that makes me want to punch the authors. It's AU, with Sasuke being japanese and Naruto being american. When they speak in japanese, they put the enligsh text in italics to show the used language. That's fine. But there are times when they write out whole sentences or just expressions with romanji (or what), without giving translation to it or whatever. It's like screaming "BOO-HOO look how awesome I am, I know this in japanese, I'm cool" and makes me stop reading the story no matter how good the characterization and everything else is.

I took one semester of Japanese but I didn't feel the need to put what little knowledge I knew into ENGLISH literature.

Although I did admit I wrote romanji on some of my art, but..that was personal use and not even fanart. Now, I can't even read romanji! Go me! lol

101. ...orz being an only child. D: I kind of relate, though I have a friend who has it really bad. Her parents are doctors and expect her to be one too. The girl's a genius, but she's under a ton of pressure all the time.

107. Bad move. A lot of interviewers are more interested in seeing how you answer their questions than what your answers actually are. Honestly, they probably couldn't care less who your role model is, but by getting quiet and trying to justify the answer you gave probably gave a big vibe of "lack of confidence."

Next time, either make something up on the spot (simple answers are best!) when you get a weird question, or just say you don't have any. If you don't miss a beat and continue to present yourself in a confident manner, you shouldn't lose many points.

I'm not an only child. I have a brother who's special ed. While I understand about his condition (believe me, I understand), I feel like I have to be some sort of perfect child because my mother is ~barely hanging on~ (read: doesn't have a job herself even though she uses my brother's SSI money and her fiancee's money) and I'm "not helping".

I can't imagine what your friend is going through but at least her parents give a flying shit about her other than calling her a guest in their house when she's trying to put herself together.

The great problem is that nine times out of ten, the fanfic is written without speech marks because the person writing it wouldn't know a quotation mark if it bit them in the arse. Nine times out of ten, a second person fanfic is some sort of You-Sue, featuring a Sueified "me" doing stuff that I wouldn't do in a million years, and that creeps me out.

And present tense? It is best saved for screenplays, but I think it can be used effectively in prose. Problem here is that a writer might not recognise stories in which it might be effective and instead uses it as a gimmick in a mediocre story - and the mediocre story becomes intensely annoying!

You have to know the rules before you can break them, and too many people don't know the rules.

115. Agreed on most everything but the quotation marks. Stylistic choices are OK, deliberately flouting grammar rules is not. I say the same thing to stuff where the author didn't bother to use capital letters, because "omgz itz mai stiiiiile!" No, it's not, it's being too lazy to apply the lessons you learned in 6th grade English class.
