Woops, somehow missed this thread. Adding my question in collapsed comment.

TMI Medical Question

(Anonymous) 2019-01-06 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi. So, I think I might have a UTI. I've got an appointment with my primary care, but not until the 14th (he's on vacation). I'm not what to do in the meantime. Does cranberry juice actually help? Are there any other things I can take or do until I see my doc?

I think vit C and lots of fluids helps in general. Not sure about specifically cranberry.

Ouch, that's a while to wait on a possible UTI. I'd see someone sooner about it, if possible.

The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking plenty of water but avoiding coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks containing citrus juices or caffeine in case they irritate your bladder.

Ooo, will have to remember that. I'm a regular coffee drinker.

Yes, I know I should see someone sooner. But I'm having insurance issues (they lost my payment and cancelled my new plan on Friday, I've messaged them, but it is the weekend so haven't heard back yet), so I'm not sure yet if I'm covered. My primary care doctor will be fine with me just paying my regular copay and waiting until I have the insurance worked out. Can't imagine any other doctor would be.

Stay on your insurance and try and see someone else sooner, or call your PC doctor's office back and ask to see a nurse practitioner or something. It's not like they *need* the doc to do the pee test.

That is way long to wait, and it could get a lot worse in the interim.

Lots of water, yes, lots of cranberry juice, no baths, don't put yourself into a position to have to wait to pee, that will exacerbate the issue.

Good luck!

Yes, cranberry juice helps, as does lots of water. AZO makes a uti medicine that's available over the counter:

But this is NOT a treatment, just a way to manage until u get to the doctor.

So I went through a bout of hellish UTIs when I was younger...

make sure it's 100% cranberry juice, not some sort of sweetened juice blend or some shit. If it's not 100% it'll make the problem worse. If it doesn't taste like you're drinking liquid death, you're doing it wrong. Also, seriously, just fucking chug the water as fast as you can handle it without getting sick. I'd get home from work and drink a glass of cranberry juice + a fucking gallon of water and just let it work through the pipes and it helped a lot.

And make sure you're keeping up on your hygiene down there. Keep it rinsed if you're getting sweaty, keep your clothes clean so bacteria isn't buildig up, etc. And be gentle when you wipe. It won't make a huge difference but depending on what kind of infection it is, you want to make sure you aren't further irritating things.

Other than that, there's not much you can do.

Drink lots and lots of water to help flush things out.

Consider going to an urgent care clinic, if possible, so you don't have to wait so long.

UTIs can certainly pass on their own (I had one clear up on it's own before I could even get to a dictor), but I believe there's a risk of infection passing on to the kidneys if it doesn't go away quickly, and you don't want that.

Research on cranberry juice is mixed. While the acids should help a UTI, most juice is overloaded with sugar that can feed a UTI.

I can't imagine waiting a week to be seen for a UTI. I would be utterly miserable.

Nothing helps a UTI but antibiotics. You can take AZO for the pain, and I would suggest drinking as much water as possible.

I've been prone to UTIs since childhood and take this stuff when I feel early symptoms. Sometimes it knocks it out, sometimes not.

Unsweetened cranberry juice helps, although it tastes a bit like bile. If you can get miracle berry tablets they won’t do anything for the infection, but they block sour taste receptors on your tongue for a bit, and if you dissolve a bit on your tongue before chugging the cranberry juice it’ll taste less disgusting. Try to avoid eating or drinking anything really sugary.

I’ve used celery seed tea (boil water, add celery seeds, let steep, drain out seeds, chug—adding to mint tea makes it less gross) before which is basically just a diuretic. Whatever else you do, drink lots of water and go pee frequently.

Are there any walk-in clinics you can go to? Over a week is a really long time to sit on an infection, tbh, especially one that can so easily travel up into your kidneys or bladder. Hell, you might even consider just eating the $40 cost and doing an online doctor, because honestly all you need is a prescription for antibiotics-- I've done this before in a pinch, and it works just fine.

If there is absolutely no way that you can do anything but wait until seeing your primary care guy, then drink just. So much water. So much. You need to be peeing a lot, and peeing perfectly clear. Cranberry does help as long as it's 100% juice, and there's also a supplement called D-Mannose that can help flush your urinary tract out a bit. Mostly the water, though.

Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea to wait that long. If it's a UTI, it could get seriously uncomfortable and even worse, the infection could worsen and spread to your bladder and kidneys, causing kidney damage. You do NOT want that. The diagnosis of a UTI is fairly simple (pee in a cup!) and the antibiotic treatment is easy. Hit up Urgent Care, or see if there's a CVS with a clinic attached.

Stuff like this doesn't clear up on its own, and the longer you wait, the more serious it gets.

If you can find it anywhere, nettle tea and parsley tea can supposedly help a lot.
