[Zac Efron as Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile]

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Zac looks good. Darn. Kinda playing into that "sexy Ted Bundy" thing, especially after the recent release on Netflix.

Is pre-backlash a thing? Prolash? Because all I heard with that was "don't glorify serial killers or think they're sexy." Big time message everywhere. (Not that I disagree. Just saying, this started loud and fast to try to drown out the fetishization before it could get started.)

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
There was also a documentary that was already released, so it's not just the Efron movie

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Do you mean the one last month on Netflix? I wouldn't be surprised if there were more, but the one I'm thinking about is the tapes (or whatever) from Netflix. As soon as I realized it was even a thing, it was followed up with "but don't fetishize!" from different social media platforms.

Prolash LOL

All the cool kids are obligated to get the moral messaging out there ASAP.

There's no conspiracy here? People hear about a thing that they think is dumb and bad, and so they say that they think it's dumb and bad

Somehow this secret feels like it was made by a 16-year-old parroting all the typical social media rhetoric without much context or understanding of what it means.

Anyway, I thought the trailer was fun, too, and clearly the film has an ironic self-awareness to it. And I don't get all the pearl-clutching over serial killer shows/movies. But I don't believe entertainment media affects normal people in real life, and I'm afraid you can't convince me otherwise.

From what I've read about serial killers, they don't kill a bunch of people to be famous. They do it because they're mentally ill, often the result of abuse, and have these compulsive urges they can't seem to satisfy, no matter how many times they act them out. At least that's my understanding of what drove Bundy. I don't think Bundy would have gone to see a serial killer movie and been like, "Well, shit, that's what I need to be doing with my life."

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of serial killers, especially those like Bundy who develop a kind of media personality, actually do highly value publicity. Some even get upset and angry if the media misrepresents their crimes or motive, and at least one (David Berkowitz, aka the Son of Sam killer) altered his "pattern" specifically to play into the media circus. (Specifically, he began trying to kill one woman in every borough of NYC only after local papers speculated that might be his plan.)

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, but that's not the same as watching a movie about serial killers and suddenly deciding to become one for the publicity.

There are certain types of serial killer who definitely appreciate the fame and notoriety. Zodiac, for example, Dennis Rader aka BTK and David Berkowitz aka Son of Sam. Bundy himself was enough of a narcissist that he enjoyed being consulted for other serial killer cases. Richard Ramirez was well known to bask in the attention of the press and play up his image. They don't kill a bunch of people to be famous, no... but the fame was definitely one aspect of their crimes.

I just watched the trailer for this film and, at the risk of sounding dramatic, I'm genuinely completely disgusted. Why is a man who tortured, mutilated, raped, and murdered women and multiple children being treated like some kind of cheeky, lovable rock'n'roll ne'er-do-well? What the fuck? What the FUCK

Can you fucking imagine if a trailer for a film about Ariel Castro or Josef Fritzl featured a playful rock soundtrack and big excited titles like "[MAIN ACTOR] IS..." like it's a fucking classic rock biopic?

Big same.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't one of the most surprising things about Ted Bundy when he was caught the fact that he was such a very normal, charming person who everyone liked? Like, people were expecting some sort of weird, creepy loser and then it turned out to be someone who helped people with their groceries and was nice to everyone. That was literally the image he cultivated and projected.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And a presentation of that story that focuses on the normal, charming, sexy facade is bad. The important thing is that he was all of those things, and also a serial killer. The trailer, at the very least, did a really poor job of getting that message across.

Yawn. This discourse is tedious. It's Bundy, not Dahmer. He was had a facade of charm, handsomeness and kindness and used it. It's not 'glorifying' it's showing an in-character depiction.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
This. I feel like none of these people who are throwing a fit actually know anything about Ted Bundy at all. His entire schtick was his charm - that was what made him so terrifyingly successful. Lots of the women he killed went off with him of their own volition because he seemed so harmless. Hell, a lot of the time he would pretend to have a broken arm or leg and would ask his victims for help doing something like unloading his car. It says something about how good he was at convincing people he was sincere that no one ever questioned him in those situations.

The trailer is taking it over the top, though. Bundy was relatively handsome and charming, he wasn't some charismatic sexy rockstar with washboard abs. Remember that all the hype about Bundy being handsome, charming, etc. is through the lens of what people expected, i.e. an unwashed psycho with three teeth who went around with his hands down his pants. Contemporary accounts at the time say he was charming and personable in a "nice young man" kind of way, they definitely did not say he was a slightly twinkier version of Burt Reynolds.

So no, that trailer is not an in-character depiction.

This type of thing really does bother me. I have a hard enough time with those 'real life' dramas that only glorify death for viewers to get off on. Movies/shows that give killers the recognition that they've killed for are just off the level to me.
People actually died over this. It doesn't matter how long ago they've died, or how badly they try (or not, obviously) to condemn their killer- all I say, is let the killers rot, fade into obscurity, and let their victims rest in peace. It's literally the least we could do.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-10 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
But what other fad can the studios exploit then :(

I can definitely see how family of his victims might find a trailer or movie where he comes off as a rock star...distasteful.
