Depends if the "fuck Nazis" stuff is actually directed at Nazis or if it's at middle of the road conservatives imo. It's a problem when you start seeing everything as a threat.

I think most people aren't trying to justify the jokes themselves, they're pointing out that Gunn had already acknowledged and apologized for them prior to his firing and most importantly - he'd made a concerted effort to change and not make stupid, awful jokes like that anymore.

While I don't think his tweets were all that bad, they were gross, and I supported the decision to fire him. Full disclosure: this may be because I've had an irrational dislike of him for years. It just confirms that Disney makes profit>principle decisions. Not surprised that that'd be their attitude, but just disappointed. Since Guardians is not my favorite franchise, I'll probably be skipping the theater for #3.

"people on Twitter should not decide who gets fired" is a totally different idea than "people shouldn't get fired for Tweets"! I agree that you shouldn't just be fired for having a tweet that's, like, controversial. But I think there are tweets that really are bad that one could deserve to get fired for, depending on the context.

And then, like you say, ultimately companies are going to do what they want to.

I agree that there's a real, meaningful distinction between moderate conservatives and far-right extremists.

But I also think that there's an important conversation to have about the extent to which the policies and goals of those two groups have been similar and the extent to which moderate conservatism was and is willing to make use of far right extremist tendencies. And I also think that the far right has largely captured and taken over pretty much all conservative institutions and structures.
