good lord yawl we're still fighting about Tony Stark on here

Antis are usually the most vocal proponents of "everyone lives together happily and there's no conflict ever because disagreements are abusive". Except for that one character they hate, that one's evil and abusive and needs to die.

Lol, ikr? I'm like, oh wow dude you're definitely not just proving secret!anon's point or anything. Definitely not.

Don't have a hateboner. Don't like him but don't hate him. Don't care who does like him. Just seems like his fans are weirdly defensive of him and seem to react overly strong to the idea of anyone else not liking him.`

I don't listen to podcasts so I'm confused by this.

We were returning from Endgame and VERY deep in our feelings. Even without that, though, it's still, like, a really strangely specific set of tropes.

Probably will be for a while yet. Basically until the AE buzz has died away.
So like, six months?

I agree. I Love TLJ. My 4th favorite Star Wars movie. And personally I thought it was far better than TFA. Just had a discussion/argument with a guy on Facebook who just couldn't wrap his mind around someone disagreeing with his hatred of TLJ. He kept on trying to convince me that I had to see that I was wrong.

somebody once told me it made them distrust me that i loved Tony as a character. idk how common that level of virulent, nonsensical hatred is, but i can understand how it breeds defensiveness. especially given that, in terms of being morally gray(tm) he's in pretty good company in the mcu

I still love those sets of tropes. I wish I could figure out what specific tags to search to find me that kind of thing.

I stopped posting fanfic because all anyone wants to read is porn.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I absolutely LOVE Kylo, but he's A BAD GUY WHO DOES EVIL THINGS. I keep seeing posts that say "BEN SOLO DID NOTHING WRONG!!!" and yeah, NO.

what about a movie like the sixth sense or jordan peele's films, where the whole fun of it is the reveal(s) and how it re-casts everything we've seen before? obviously it can be fun to re-watch and see the same scenes through a new light, but plenty of good movies would be way less fun if you went in knowing the big spoilers?

I think people just are different when it comes to movies. That's how it is for me. I can know the entire plot going in and still love a movie. In fact, it can increase my enjoyment because I can see details I'd miss trying to follow the plot. And I hate surprises. That being said, for some people, that first viewing and the surprise is important, and that's okay too.

I just hate the whole notion that no one should even be allowed to read spoilers and that spoilers ruin it for everyone. If I want spoilers, that's on me.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... when it first came out and I was seeing bits of the plot online, I thought it was 90% made up - like the random shit people passed off as 50 Shades quotes when that first came out.
But it was all true. Not one single plot point had been made up by people looking to mess with others - possibly because the truth was already crazy enough.

My dude, fans of most polarizing characters tend to feel defensive if the segment of fandom they're involved in is loudly and vitriolically determined to inform everyone that this is the worst character ever, even worse than all those other characters who've done comparable things. Even if it means barging into what is clearly intended to be a positive conversation about that character to shit all over the fans' parade. Even if the conversation is about some other character or plot arc that's tangentially related, and they're the only ones bringing that character up.

I need to work on having zero expectations when watching anime. Not every anime can be top tier like Sarazanmai, some anime simply will never be as popular. Not to mention when I read about the issues the anime industry has with overwork I feel guilty for complaining about the difference in quality, even if they contribute in some anime flying under the radar while others get all the praise.

Except Daisy's also said that Rey "really sees the, like, glimmer in Kylo. That there’s some good there, and she goes with it. And I thinks that’s pretty wonderful… I think he is redeemable."

So.

Jordan Peele movies to me are more than just the reveal. Sixth Sense is not, which is why I never thought it was a good movie. I think a movie has to be rewatchable for me to consider it good. But then again, I think good is mostly subjective, this is just my personal opinion.

I'm not saying JP is just the reveal, just that the experience of both Get Out and Us is enhanced by knowing as few plot points as possible going in. (Hell, the marketing for GO barely revealed a single thing about the plot or conflict, which, IMO, made the experience of seeing the film much more fun). They probably wouldn't be ruined by spoilers, but the original experience crafted by the filmmaking team would be somewhat spoiled.

Which is not the same thing as saying there is a romance? Rey can see good in him without being romantically attracted to him. Nor is it the same thing as woobification, unless you think any redemption is woobification, including Darth Vader's redemption in Return of the Jedi.
