When people talk about "monopolies" in a general sense, they're probably talking about anti-competitive behaviors and companies and trusts that dominate markets and industries and have excessive control over prices and services, rather than referring specifically to companies with exclusive control and no competitors whatsoever. And it's probably more useful and better to just roll with that rather than insisting on the formal definition. Especially since those things are extremely real problems.

Where are we actually getting the idea that fandom disportionately hates straight white male characters? That seems bizarrely unfounded to me, especially given the legions of straight white male fandom faves.

I think just existing in fandom makes it pretty clear than fandom disproportionately both loves and hates straight white male characters. I would say the disproportionate love is probably more ubiquitous than the disproportionate hate, but one very much does not preclude the other.

which characters you're willing to forgive for it is just a reflection of taste to a certain extent, but even more than that, a reflection of one's own personal issues.

I largely agree with this.

However, I think the fact that a domineering character is white and male definitely does make it more likely that they will rub some people the wrong way, specifically because it plays directly into (completely valid) issues people already have about white privilege, male privilege, and how that privilege tends to shape the way men and white people conduct themselves in society.

Sort of depends on the fandom.

Because there are superpowered beings(superheroes, supervillains, werewolves, vampires, wizards, etc.) with the means to easily do that in several that I can think of. Plus there are a few characters that are into weightlifting workouts or are firefighters that likely wouldn't have much of an issue depending on the person they are lifting. And then there are those whose canon has shown them easily lifting someone unconscious even though they probably wouldn't be able to in the real world.

Probably not long at all.

They make Converse hi-tip shoes with wedge heels, and I've seen a couple in this style, with 'free' heels (or whatever you'd call that. non-wedge).

Cute for sure.

Klaus is also a Sad Gay Boi, which anyone will tell you forgives everything. Luthor is trying to be The Tough Leader Man, while Klaus just wants to get high and not hear dead people all the time. Big difference.

Ah, man. I'm gonna give this a shot, since I desperately want to re-read a Supernatual fic.....

Sam is dying, and makes a death-wish with a djinn. He and Dean are 'reborn' - apart. But Dean at age four starts asking about 'Sam', has nightmares and cries over missing 'Sam', etc. Sam, meanwhile, is in the foster system, changes his name to 'lose' himself and hopes Dean never finds him.

But he does, and Dean's parents, in particular (Dean is an adult now) are surprised and a little weirded out that Dean has found the 'Sam' he talked bout all his life and is apparently very happy with him (it's a Wincest fic even though they're not actually blood or even half/step/foster siblings in this fic).

But that seems to agree with AYRT's argument that it's about tropes and character types, rather than OP's argument that fandom is prejudiced against straight white males

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think it *can* be, depending on how it's written. I tend not to have OTPs/NOTPs, so my answer to this sort of thing is always gonna be a bit wishy-washy, but yeah - IF Sansa gets some proper character development, IF Tyrion stops flipping between 'smug drunk' and 'self-pitying drunk', IF Sansa's not just stuck making the best of a terrible situation and developing Stockholm Syndrome... I've seen some really good Sansa/Tyrion fics, and some really bad ones too.

You do realise Disney holds such a majority that if you've pretty much seen most films (and a lot of tv) in the past ten years the money would go back to Disney? (Yes, Disney even owns Miramax so that includes all of the more 'indy stuff'.) seen a film in the past ten years you would also be 'funding Disney and its proprietry bullshit'.
Also, ffs let people enjoy what they want to enjoy and not be such asshole about it. You must be real fun at parties.

Since it seems to be GOT day today, has anyone seen any time travel fic where Jaime or Sandor or Tyrion are the one to travel back in time? I'm interested to see how their changed characters impact the story. (Maybe Jaime most of all - I reckon Sandor as likely as not to just toss Joffrey out a window first chance then bigger off for parts unknown, and Tyrion's been less interesting of late)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
(Anon that ayrt's replying to) I was going to say something similar, but probably less coherent and with more cussing, so thank you for that :)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I mean I kind of enjoy the "shockingly strong for his size" trope. And sometimes it's not too far from realistic. I have a couple of naturally muscular guy friends who are shorter than me, but who can lift me pretty damn easily, even though I'm only maybe 30 pounds lighter than they are.

But there are definitely limits to believability. If the liftee is already slightly smaller than the lifer in canon, and that size difference is commonly emphasized by fanon, then it's probably going to work for me in fic. But if you tell me that Tony lifts Steve, or Dean lifts Sam, or Stiles lifts Derek or something, then yeah, my brain is probably going to scoff incredulously.

Letterkenny secret, nice!

I'm sorry to hear about your past bullying, OP + Agreed that Wayne is a sweetie; I don't blame you for liking him.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt - exactly! They're both white men (and walking disasters), and one is loved and one is hated. That pretty immediately undermines OPs point.

OP

Depends on the guy. Namero doesn’t even wear a shirt under his jacket: https://exist-archive.fandom.com/wiki/Namero_Todoroki

ayrt

Like above anon said, that's what I'm saying?

And if Klaus was just Sad BoI, I think he'd still be hugely popular. Fandom would just write him as Sad Gay Boi.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, boring.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Finish the quote. "Probably the most suitable word is "attractive," although people who knew what it meant and could spell it might add "vivacious," although there is something very Fifties about "vivacious," so perhaps they wouldn't."

Attractive and vivacious could say model to me.

Could it be this one - Whispers of Winter by
Shadowmire, Part 2 of the Ancient Winds series (https://archiveofourown.org/works/13821378?view_full_work=true)?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
White male characters aren’t disproportionately hated by fandom. This sure is a take.

...bugger. Sandor would BUGGER off for parts unknown. I cannot believe autocorrect censored me.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's the exact opposite of how things usually play out in fandom, but sure.
