Chris Hemsworth could easily pick up Scarjo or RDJ. Even without the camera tricks, he's a pretty big guy.

They're not the same fandom. If they were, they'd be arguing about whether Anathema is a POC.

I remember a girl in a fandom I was in sliding into faker territory with a story about running into David Duchovny at a gas station (or maybe it was a super market) late one night, and having a pretty fantasy level chat with him. She didn't go as far as to say they became friends, or he asked for her number, or anything. But it was still a very idealized scenario, in a way that made many of us 99% sure it was made up.

It was a weird one, because she was fairly popular in fandom, and for the most part was friendly and fun to talk to and, well, normal. But I guess her need to feel...idk, cool and validated? got away from her now and then. To my memory, nobody confronted her and accused her of lying (which I'm glad about now) - but we had some private conversations about it among ourselves.

White Male Characters who fandom hates

Because I'm having trouble thinking of many, but that might just be me.
Bonus points if they're not a villain.
Double bonus points if they're not straight.

Nathan Ford from Leverage. Can't stand the half of fandom that thinks the show would have been better without his character.

Can I count Michael from The Good ? Fans love him but hate when you ship him with Eleanor because you're detracting from more diverse ships.

I just showed this to my roommate and she said "if you make it for me I'll wear it"

so, cosigned, OP. it's a delightful design. (we're adding a sheer black mouth panel though)

Well, Luther is obvious.

A lot of people hate Castiel.

Scott from Teen Wolf. Yeah, he is hispanic but he is white hispanic. And he looks as white as any other white character on the show.

da

plus exposed underwear? I'm down with that wholeheartedly. but what the fuck happened to his chest?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
A character doesn't have to be hated by more than 50% of fans to be disproportionately hated. A character being disproportionately hated just means proportionately more people hate them than hate other characters with similar qualities/credentials.

There are a lot of elements that complicate this issue. For instance, what counts as fandom? If we're talking about the heavily female dominant fandom of fanfiction and tumblr and such, then I would say white, straight male characters often do get proportionally more hate than, say, WoCs (WSM characters also get more love, but those two things are not mutually exclusive). But OTOH, I suspect that in more male dominated fandom spaces, that is very much not the case.

Then there's also the issue of fandom popularity. Stories staring white, straight male leads are often the most popular; therefore they have a larger audience; therefore a smaller percentage of that audience still ends up equaling a bigger number of people who hate the white, straight, male lead. In such cases, the white, straight male lead isn't disproportionately hated, but for people who like him, it may feel that he is disproportionately hated, because compared to the non-white/straight/male characters they like, he gets way more hate.

lmao fandom loves the shit out of asshole white dudes though (Loki, Kylo, Onceler, pretty much any villain), OP. If anything him being a white dude works in his favor. Meanwhile, Vanya gets almost, if not more, hatred than Luther. Being female or a POC just ensures a character will either face disproportionate hatred or complete indifference/be ignored.

I hate skimpy outfits in JRPGs, but I like this too... It's oddly cute?

the fact that scott is hispanic makes him not-white, him being white-passing doesn't magically negate that. so no, that's not a white character being hated, that's a hispanic character being hated.

Scott isn't hispanic. The actor is like...1/16 hispanic.

The Sherlock fandom doesn't hate Sherlock, but a whole lot of Greater Fandom does. (It's possibly deserved, though, and I say that as a fan.)

And, of course, Tony Stark. Is he disproportionately loved? Definitely. Is he also disproportionately hated? Absolutely. Will I concede that he is MORE disproportionately loved than hated? Yup. But all the same.

A lot of people love Harry Potter, but a lot of other people seem to think he's a boring-ass white boy who ought to take several seats and let "more interesting" characters lead.

Malcolm Reynolds.

And then there's pretty much every white, straight male lead from an '00s show - most of whom were pretty good characters in and of themselves, but who garner a lot of contempt because, "Oh god, not another one; what flavor of mavericky-genius-with-manpain will he be this time?"

Piggybacking on yesterday's thread, I have known several "gay guys" who turned out to be cishet girls playing pretend for the attention. It's always beyond entertaining when they get found out and dragged over the coals. Some of the excuses they come up with! One girl desperately tried to claim she had "multiple personality disorder" and she hadn't lied at all, to which literally everyone was like "that isn't how DID works you fucking asshole" LMAO

That is a cute and stylish outfit and it looks like something that someone would choose to wear of their own accord, which is nice.

The same can be said about Steve Rogers. And Loki (though he is a villain). They don't really count because they are also hugely loved.

My first big run-in with this was Finn Hudson from Glee. Like, he was a dumb teenager and he made dumb teenager mistakes, literally all of them did, but god you'd think he was the actual fuckin' Antichrist for how much hate he got. So ridiculous. It got so bad that if you even remotely gave the idea that you were in any way fond of him as a character, you too were the Antichrist and people descended on you like locusts.

Plus, only looking at whether or not white male characters are hated doesn't give you a basis to compare against - it's not like fandom only hates male characters
