It's not that I wanted him to die because that's how super-hero stories are supposed to work.

I wanted him to die because he was a lame character. Seriously, he had such potential for awesomeness at the beginning. When he killed characters, it was usually properly dramatic and suspenseful. But every time he had a showdown with any major character, he became a total lame-ass. If the writers really wanted me to look forward to Sylar, they shouldn't have failed so hard at making him more than merely laughable in the finale.

(for the record, I also don't find him even mildly attractive -- that might add to my lack of enthusiasm)

worldrefugees2 for a Kingdom Hearts example of self-inserts done right. 90% of the characters are the most literal form of self-insert. Most (CERTAINLY not all, there are a few wall-banger cases) are very believable, very human, and quite engaging... often because they are self inserts.
Don't be fooled by the power levels of some of them, most of the characters with combat skills had to work very, very hard for them, and in some cases paid quite dearly for them.

101) Yeah, that's gotta be frustrating for you. Canon can't possibly satisfy you very often. It's too bad you can't do what I do, and scrupulously only ship pairings that are not and are highly unlikely ever to be canon. This way I can enjoy canon whatever happens, and enjoy my ships without them ever being in conflict. I spend a lot of time imagining and reimagining all the different au possibilities that would make my pairing (however unlikely) work. It's endlessly entertaining.
