126. Breakfast On Pluto is amazing(even though it is, as you put it, artsy), and I do believe he's got an american accent in Watching the Detectives, plus he was in both Batman movies(though barely a cameo in the second).

I love Cillian(and Rachel McAdams), but even I wasn't able to get through Red Eye.

161. One word: Google

Re: 126, 161

[identity profile] beckara.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Breakfast on Pluto was decent, but I didn't really like it overall; nor did I care much for the book itself. I loved Cillian's performance but the movie failed to hook me.

I'm...in Irish Literature and Drama studies at University and to me, BoP told the same sort of story, of the same problems, and of the same pain that so many better Irish films capture beautifully. This one seemed like it was trying to hard. Like Pay it Forward, or Transamerica.

I love Liam Neeson's small role, though.

Watching the Detectives was awful and straight to DVD for a reason.

...And I loved Red Eye! It was straight forward, cheesy thriller fun and a great movie to watch and not have to focus much on. Hardly a good movie and it has no merit artistically. But it is entertaining, I liked it.

130. ILU very much. I write a lot of OC style fics but never post them because while I'm pretty sure I can make a likable character, I'm not so sure I can get anyone liking a character they are predisposed to hate just because he/she isn't from canon.

I don't understand why this is a secret, everyone seems to love this damn movie and think she's great.

But for me, I have to ask, for who is it supposed to be empowering to? For who assassins who get knocked up? They finally make a movie with a kick as lady and its BACK to being about a baby/kid. Fuck me. That's lame. I mean I love a bad ass mama bear, but this was not a good woman, this was not a good person, she was a murderer, a killer with no redeeming values. I ask not because I am trying to be combative, I ask because I really don't know how she's empowering at all. Unless you want to be an assassin then rock on. Do you, cause that would be AWESOME.

136

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel like most of the people who complain about it are just covering up for the fact that I saw it 7 times when it came out or they want to distinguish themselves as having taste. (This is not to say everyone has to love it but whenever I see anyone trashing this film it feels like denial to me)

I mean at its heart it is a love story and a prettily archetypal kind of love story at that and it does that quite nicely.

Also I am actually kind of excited that Leo and Kate are teaming up again for another movie.

104. Gah, I feel your pain -- there's a (relatively rare) pairing I like in one of my fandoms, and every time a post shows up on my flist indicating a new story about them has been written I get excited.....aaaaaand then I see it's her again and *groan*. I'm with you on the latter part of your secret, too: I don't want to write about the pairing, I want to read other people's ideas. I mean, I know what I think about them already -- I want to hear what other creative people have to say.

108. James Purefoy: welcome on any ride of any nature, ever.

110. Yes, Naono Bohra love! She's basically the only yaoi mangaka I can stomach at this point: her men are real, full-grown adult men. I'm sorry I deleted all my yaoi off my HD, or I would give you recs. T__T

113. The shades on that man make me want to watch this, whatever it is.

116. That is AWESOME. I'm breaking out my Badass Cylon icon just for you. ;)

118. Whoa, what episode is that screencap from? I don't remember that moment.

131. That's a gorgeous picture.

143. Heh, yeah, that movie will do that to you. At my local arthouse theater, they actually had a counselor available in the lobby after each nightly showing in case you needed to talk. I'd never encountered that before.

Toobig!2 Um sorry but he's still possessive asshole and her life still REVOLVES around him. It's still as sexist as hell. The only advantage I see is that the smut doesn't fade to black XD YAY VAMPIRE PORN.

Re: toobig!2

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The only reason I take it as my guilty pleasure is that MS doesn't dress itself up to be anything other than what it is. It isn't projecting itself as being about "choice" or as a model or glamorizes Kyohei (that is his right?) as perfect and gentile. And yes it is sexist and not desirable, it at least acknowledges the dysfunction and plays that way.

Yes it is sexist, but at least it doesn't pretend that it isn't whereas Twilight I got the impression that I was supposed to see Bella and Edward as perfect love which creeped me out.

Yes, but he hasn't grown or changed really. Like, at all. That's why I want him dead -- keeping him around in season two just beat a dead horse.

Then again, this is Heroes. Storytelling and style takes a backseat to utilizing the rating boosting power of cute blonde cheerleaders and hot people making out.

Re: 182

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. That argument MIGHT work if he were at all different from when we first met him. He's not. Nearly everyone else is, but not him. You argue that because he's a villain "doesn't mean he can't have growth and character development". Yeah... but we've not seen it so far. And, again, it's not like there hasn't been time, and that other characters haven't developed. How many seasons do we have to put up with him before we're allowed to want him gone?

138- Go to anime conventions. I've met so many wonderful anime fans at them. <3

Also, I feel your pain. My current group of friends aren't into anime, and so I feel like I'm not really being myself around them 'cause I can't share that part of myself with them without them rolling their eyes.

163- He is just amazing, isn't he? Lovelovelove.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
103. One of the many hang-ups about this show is how they treat Meg, it's past funny now, seriously.

105. ;_;

110. Try Kazuhiko Mishima's Oyaji Hiromashita, she typically does the "older, taller uke" thing but they're not neccesarily oyaji age though. Wah, there's so few of it since Bohra is so popular for it.... And perfectly fine of liking porn with older men. Oh yes, it's damn fine.

127. You called Vaan a retard (even though he's much worse than that). I LUV U. But a good older man/younger girl pairing can be very hot (I'm a Vincent/Yuffie shipper). Rock your thang and surely people will follow.

130. Because a very large of amount IS full of Mary Sue and not done very well. There are some good OC fics, but that amount I can only count in one hand. A good amount of them tend to screw the canon characters a bit to fit their character in and be accepted.

131. .... wat? Edward isn't exactly an unique name in fiction. It's on thing if he's a vampire as well.

135. ;_; Gummi Bears were full of fuckawesome, seriously. I used to draw notebooks full of fan comics about them and I regret losing them all.

138. Funny thing is almost all my friends are anime fans and we rarely talk about anime... except for one close friend.

139. Whoa. Dunno who they are but they look fitting for the part by face alone.

157. Is it bad to admit the only reason that made me finish this show was Minami/Yutaka?

174. LOL, now I want someone to write this for the lulz.

130. Everyone assumes that self-inserts and OCs equal Mary Sues because 99.99999% of the time, they do. I read a lot of fanfiction, and I've come across a grand total of two fics featuring OCs as major characters (not supporting characters) that weren't blatant Suefics. And even both of those OCs had some Sueish characteristics.

In any case, I think what's most disturbing about your secret is that you seem to be implying that only fics with OCs can be good and original, and that all fics which feature only canon characters are automatically trite and generic. Which is completely nonsensical. Good writing is good writing; it has nothing to do with whether or not a fic features an OC. I certainly hope that's not what you meant, but that's how it came across to me.

Re: 130

(Anonymous) 2008-09-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what I meant at all. It's just that I'm tired of reading the same characters doing almost... the same general stuff, slightly changed. It's like the plots get recycled constantly just to make canon characters work.

Obviously that's not always the case, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, or doesn't happen often.

And if you're going to say OCs have Sueish characteristics, you have to be able to see that many canon characters, especially of the main/lead female type, have many Sueish characteristics as well.

I understand where you're coming from, and I understand where fandom is coming from. The internet is full of fanfiction, and a lot of bad fanfiction. And, unfortunately, most of the people who write OCs do a poor job of it.

Now, if you want to know where to find good Star Wars OC fic, I can direct you to some of my favourite writers and stories. The trick is finding a community where there's support for such things, and that can be hard to do. I definitely know of some awesome OC stories, though.

Re: 130
