That Alabama thing

So, what country do you live in and is it harder or easier to get an abortion than in the U.S.?

Re: That Alabama thing

I live in Australia, and abortion is technically illegal in several states (which people keep forgetting, even if they live in those states, because the "technically" is "unless the health of the woman is in danger" and mental health is a consideration, so most people just go to the doctor and get a note and it's done, buuuuut... not always. Because this is not a well thought out system). It's fully legal in my state, but we don't have a dedicated surgical abortion provider because the only one closed last year and the government hasn't done shit about setting up a new one.
Left wing parties in the states where it's limited keep trying to fully legalise it, but inertia is a powerful thing. :c

The US is more than one state. Get outside of the incest rape cult states and it’s not as big a deal.

Until they overturn Roe v Wade.

Re: That Alabama thing

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And once they've done that, they'll be going after birth control.

Re: That Alabama thing

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Overturning Roe would return control to the states, which means that abortion would remain legal in much of the country.

It's still really shitty for women in those states, especially poor women and women of color.

Why woc in particular? Not trying to start anything here, I don’t live in the US so don't understand the nuance i'm obviously missing here.

Finland. If you want to have an abortion, you should have it before the 12 week limit. After that a special permission is required.

I’m in the U.S., but I’m in coastal California so it’s not so bad. At this rate I wish women could just be selectively infertile without outside medical intervention, but the pro-women-are-incubators-not-people crowd would probably find a way to criminalize that, since some women who suffer spontaneous miscarriages/abortions already get prosecuted for murder/manslaughter. Gah.

What I know about abortions in Canada: They're legal, from what I've heard they're not hard to access, and I think they're often funded by the government? Pretty sure they're legal in all stages of pregnancy, but I don't know what kind of protocol there is for getting a late-term abortion. I highly doubt you can just walk into a clinic and get one. (I'm ace and don't have sex, so I haven't had much reason to dig up the deets, beyond being very happy that they're legal and accessible because damn right they should be.)

What Wiki says: "Abortions in Canada are provided on request and funded by Medicare, to Canadian citizens and permanent residents in hospitals across the country. Abortion funding for hospitals comes from the various provincial governments (their overall health expenses are however paid for in part by the federal government). One-third of hospitals perform abortions, and these perform two-thirds of abortions in the country. The remaining abortions are performed by public and private-for-profit clinics."

I'm in Missouri, and they're trying to do the same thing here. Currently you can still get an abortion in MO, but there's a 72 hour wait. Most people go over the border to Illinois where you can get it same-day, including surgical and non-surgical.

I am infuriated, disgusted, and sickened by all this shite.

TO HELL WITH THE ALABAMA SENATE AND TO HELL WITH PRO-LIFERS!

It's incorrect to call anyone who would make a 10-year-old who was raped by her father go through the physical and psychological trauma of childbirth "pro-life." Particularly when most of them are affiliated with the political party that pointedly doesn't give a shit about the health and well-being of children post-partum. Pro-forced labor, maybe.

To hell with the whole damn Republican party. A party that rips children from their families and then turns around and does this. They can rot in hell.

Yeah at this point I'm genuinely hoping they all lose their jobs and healthcare and die off because they are horrid, disgusting people. The would would be much better off without them.

People in countries where abortion is legal and noncontroversial should lobby their governments to allow free plane tickets and refugee status to women in countries and US states where it's illegal (either by law or technicality.) It's their obligation as privileged women.
