Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-05-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think those things are wrong, but I don't think they are misandry because I don't think misandry exists. Discrimination requires power. Men are the one with power. I think there are ways where men are at a disadvantage, but most of them are actually rooted in misogyny (for example, the fact that men can have difficulty with child custody is rooted in assumptions that women are the ones who take care of the kids).

You don't think there are situations where a woman has more power than a man?

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-05-25 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
A woman and a man are not the point. Discrimination involves systems, and no women as a group are not the one with power over men. Of course, there are other types of discrimination, and a white woman can be racist against a black man. But that's racism. Misandry is not a thing.

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
So if a group of women decide not to employ a man solely on the basis that he is man, that would not qualify as misandry to you?

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Why does that man need to have that job? Is the man so unqualified that he can't be employed by other people who are okay with the fact that he is man?

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Why does anyone need a job? And if he's qualified or not for other positions is irrelevant since he's qualified for the position he was denied.

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that the man's skills are so specialized that the man must have that one position in a business where the employer and employees are all women or else he is unemployable forever? That's rough, buddy.

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but what is this line of argument even? Should the same be said of women denied jobs because they are women? Just look somewhere else or it's your fault for not having a wider skill set?

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-05-25 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Because, like I said, discrimination by definition includes a power element. Discrimination being prejudice plus power is a pretty standard definition. I would say that it would qualify as a prejudice for those women to have anti-male views. Just not misandry, because that isn't a thing.

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Misandry is a thing. That is like saying racism against white people isn't a thing.

That prejudice+power bullshit is for INSTITUTIONAL RACISM/SEXISM. Keyword, institutional.

Regular racism/sexism can be towards any and all groups.

Racism against white people isn't a thing. "Regular racism/sexism" isn't a thing. Racism and sexism are inherently institutional. That's part of their definition. An individual woman can be prejudiced against men. But sexism/sex discrimination has a power component.

On a structural level, there are none. Power in the context of discrimination means structural, systemic power imbalance between demographics, not "well that guy has a female supervisor".

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Men "joke" about raping and killing women and many actually do it. Women might joke "kill all men" or talk about how if men went extinct nothing of value would be lost...but how many of them actually go on men killing sprees?

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think we're doing women any favors by painting them as peaceful and sinless - that's just benevolent sexism. Women can be violent and dangerous. Women do kill and rape men; those jokes are NEVER funny and it's not okay that women get away with it because there's an underlying assumption that women are too weak and harmless to actually go through with threats.

I don't think we're doing men any favors by painting them as so feeble that they panic at a kill all men joke - that's just reverse sexism. Men can be violent and dangerous. Men do kill and rape women; those jokes are NEVER funny and it's not okay that men get away with it because there's an underlying assumption that men are too sweet-tempered and softhearted to actually go through with threats.

Nobody is doing this.

It's just shitty to be shitty to an entire group of people, even if you justify by saying it's in response to the past shitty behavior of people in that group. How does that make you any better? That is what does nobody any favors, and is just continuing the shitty cycle.

Re: What's your opinion on casual misandry?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really think the word "discrimination" requires an institutional or systematic structure. As a women and a feminist, I absolutely think men can be discriminated against. I even think that many institutions exist that blatantly disadvantage or harm men - for instance, forcing men to sign up for the draft but not women. Of course, you're right that a lot of this is actually benevolent sexism against women, but the effect is worth talking about nonetheless.

My only problem with the word "misandry" is the type of people who use it are generally the type of people who think men are the real victims and sexism against women doesn't actually exist. But I wholeheartedly welcome any discussion that frankly discusses about sexism harms men as well as women, and that men can be discriminated against. Some of these discussions are absolutely vital - for example, men underreporting getting raped because of social stigma and being less likely to get the help and resources they need.

Sorry. This is what I believe, though. And I'm not the only one in this thread saying misandry isn't a thing, so not sure why all the comments are focused at me.

Yes, you believe it like a religion, and you put just as much critical thought into it as religious fanatics.

On this subject, actually, I have put thought into it. I used to have very different views. I'm still learning, certainly. But just because I have strong opinions on something doesn't mean I haven't thought about it. Nor does the fact that you disagree with me mean I haven't thought about it. I have thought about it, I've researched, and this is what I believe.

Oh no. That is so disappointing to read...

Well I can't bring myself to be angry at Nebula, so I guess all I'll say is that I deeply disagree with all of that, and I think I'll leave it there.
