Books from your teenage years

(Anonymous) 2019-05-26 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What still holds up to you? What definitely doesn't?

Invitation to the Game was one of my favourite books as a pre-teen and it still holds up to me even at 35 (I recently bought a copy because I kept borrowing it from the library), and it's one of the ones I wish had gotten scooped up when teen sci-fi dystopia films were the rage.

I still like these.

You Don't Know Me by David Klass
Godless by Pete Hautman
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

It's written pretty juvenile-ly but I still enjoy Cirque Du Freak and the material makes up for it.

Zom-B is better in every conceivable way.

I was all about Francesca Lia Block as a teen. I think The Hanged Man would still hold up alright, and maybe Violet & Claire, but the Weetzie Bat books probably wouldn't.

Definitely holding up:

The Fire's Stone by Tanya Huff
The Tony Foster Trilogy by Tanya Huff
Cyteen by C.J. Cherryh
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende

Too scared to re-read:
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Several Darkover books by Marion Zimmer Breadley (also cause I've read them before the terrible stuff about her came out)
The Still by David Feintuch

Everything by Robert Cormier still holds up and I wish more people read his books so I can discuss them with people.

I have no clue if Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' books hold up. But I did love them.

The Vampire Chronicles, the good ones. Reread them a couple years ago, still as hot and sexy as I remembered.

Define 'still holds up' LOL.

I was OBSESSED with the last herald mage trilogy in high school. Recent reread tells me they're still fun, engaging stories but they're also terrible at the same time. No regrets.

I dunno....most of the stuff I read then I still read and enjoy now. I mean - even stuff from pre-teen days, like 'A Horse for XYZ' i still love, 'cause...'girl loves horse, girl gets horse, adventure!!' is awesome no matter your age.

Maybe 'Flowers in the Attic' would be meh now? But the nostalgia of it all would probably buoy me up. I only liked that one, anyway - the rest just got weirder and less fun.

I really wasn't into romance, and 'YA literature' about werewolves and vampires and LGBTQ kids really was not a *thing* back then.

Le Guin still stands up, so does the best of Andre Norton. I kind of regret my Steven King phase though.

Invitation to the Game!! God, I *loved* that book. The imagery was so strong, and the emotions felt so real. Ahhhhh.

Someone did that book for Yuletide a few years ago, shockingly. It focuses on the second group. It's pretty decent for a little blurb!

The older American Girl and Dear America still held up for me, as does the first Twilight book (the rest of them still piss me off though). I also still like basically all the Meg Cabot books I read, especially the Mediator series.

A bunch of Sarah Dessen books did not hold up for me, which kinda sucked because she was one of my favorite authors when I was younger. I also read Thirteen Reasons Why when it first came out and remember thinking it wasn't that bad. I reread it when I heard about the Netflix adaptation and wondered what the hell younger me liked about it.

Animorphs holds up excellently. I think it's even better reading as an adult. There's so much going on at different levels that I don't think I could focus on all of as a kid, like the characters' personal morals and how they clash or mesh with the war they're fighting.

I've tried, but I don't enjoy Sabriel or the other Old Kingdom books anymore. I thought they'd just gotten worse in quality, but when I reread Sabriel and Lirael they were boring too. Great worldbuilding, but hardly any plot, and most of the characters have no personality, especially Sabriel herself. The only two characters I still like are Mogget and Nick.

What are your favorite weird character names? Good or bad.

hey, can we play that game where one person gives the first line of a song and people name the song and artist? I can get it started....

1. Hello, my love, I heard a kiss from you
2. I got your letter, it had turned to sand
3. In the shuffling madness
4. (spoken) Ladies and gentlemen, as you know we have something special at Birdland this evening
5. Okay, it started a long time ago
6. ooh, hey, why we living in, let me tell ya
7. OWW Oww I took my baby on a Saturday bang
8. So, she says it's time she goes
9. Let me tell you how it will be, there's one for you nineteen for me
10. I'm an alligator
11. Long before I can see you, I feel you
12. I can dim the lights and sing you songs full of sad things
13. Can you feel it, see it, even today
14. I wandered so aimless life filled with sin (REALLY obscure cover, if anybody gets the artist I'll be very surprised)
15. Hey now baby, well, I like your smile
