I can understand that subs are distracting for some people. If you're not used to them they'd probably be a major inconvenience at first, especially if you're a slow reader.

However, I believe that people could get used to them pretty quickly, once it becomes clear that you don't really have to read the lines, it's just a glance in that general direction. You don't read it word for word; once your eyes get trained to it you just have to see the block of text for the content to register. It takes about a second, so you're not missing anything.

It's totally worth it, dubs never quite work on the same level as the original, IMHO.

157. Boo fucking hoo. With huge problems like that your life must suck ass, you poor thing. :-------------(

145 - Now, I suppose one could argue they don't think Naruto should have so large a fandom, or that it's not worth - in your opinion - being a fan of (which seems to be what you're actually getting at).

But arguing that it "isn't" one makes me think you're misunderstanding the meaning of the word fandom.

They will always certainly be my OTP

my best friend's obsession with that pairing totally destroyed my love for star wars, because she just couldn't stop going on and on about it even knowing i found it utterly disgusting and disturbing.

Ryuichi says "na no da" in the Japanese version of the anime a lot, and in the manga (if I'm remembering correctly, it's been a while since I've seen/read them)

These two dovetail together in a kind of hilarious way.

129. You're not as much alone with this as you might think. I know several people who like them too. *s*

Very late 157.

[identity profile] dagger-calica.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg, are you me? I just signed up for Japanese classes on Friday, because I want to work in the videogame industry and I think it'd be useful (see: the extra hassle the Wii port of Okami had because the porters were Western and all the programming notes from the now-defunct original studio were in Japanese). But I'd never want to live or work in Japan. I just think the language would be useful in the context of an industry where one of the hotbeds of production (and two of the major console hardware providers) is in Japan.

I don't get this idea that life will be better in Japan. It's a totally different culture, and it's not full of anime-lovers - its still niche over there, you'd be shunned just as much (even more, being foreign). I think lots of the people who take Japanese for that reason regret it later on.

We are kind of hypocrites, though. :/

I never heard that song before but I know what you mean. I can't listen to Orenji no Taiyou by Gackt and HYDE in front of people because I start tearing up at the line "nakanai de" (which is kind of funny since that means don't cry, ahaha).

[identity profile] saturniia.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
123. Dude, read John Berger's Ways of Seeing. Really. Then tell me we're "past the Dark Ages".
Or, you know, just get harrassed by a complete stranger on the bus while commuting to work, even though you're wearing something a heck of a lot more modest than a leopard-print dress. Ignore him, and watch how he gets angry, like you should be obligated to talk to him when you woke up maybe an hour ago and have an seven-hour shift in front of you.
Women are people, not objects, and while class and education are not necessarily the same thing, neither are they mutually exclusive. Women's bodies are not there for the Gaze or the lulz.

128: wait... there are people who don't do this?

140: Because he's hot. Duh.

145: Troll.
(please, God, or whatever invisible man is guiding the world, please let that be a troll.)

150: I would love it.
Once you get past the OMG AZN <3, I think it has to do with dedication - many Asian, especially Japanese and Korean, cosplayers just seem to enjoy the whole fandom more overall, and therefore put more passion into their designs. (Also, that's another thing - at least according to Genshiken, it's abnormal for a cosplayer in Japan to wear pre-made costumes, and the creation of the costumes is just as important, if not more so, than actually wearing them.) If more Western cosplayers really put that much passion in it, I think it would evolve into something that could compete with the Eastern cosplay scene.
If you have that passion, I'm sure I would love your cosplay, regardless of your ethnicity. In fact, I love to see Westerners pull off really good cosplay, a lot more so than any famous Japanese cosplayer.
On a slightly related note, the single most amazing cosplay I've ever seen was done by a black girl. The character she was cosplaying wasn't black. I still believed it fully. This is the kind of dedication and passion people (read: ME) want to see in cosplay. The viewers - and not only that, but the cosplayers themselves - must believe it. (I hate quoting Naruto, but it's true!)

tldr: go for it girl~

157: IAWTS ENTIRELY. (Except maybe for the severe affront to weaboos - not that I support that innane behavior at all, but w/e.) My goal in learning Japanese is to become a translator for localization. (Not just for video games, though; with any luck, for manga and other publications as well.)
It kills me when people think I'm a weaboo when they see me packing my textbooks. (Even if I am - and, well, I kinda am - but it's not my motivation for doing this. At the most it's more like a side deal - I enjoy what I do, and I do it for a career. Win/win.) And I especially hate it when those who glare accusingly are packing around a copy of a Twilight book, steadfastly affixed to their nose, fangirling over that. Bullshit, I say. Where do they get off their high horses?

I totally feel the same. Only not just with C.C. with every last cosplay... because I'm a black girl. And there are hardly any characters that I feel I could do justice to because of my skin color.

Number 107!!

112. Here here. The show is good. D: (Aside from the fillers...) I'm sick and tired of being around people who aren't people anymore either, and just manifestations of current trends.

117. I've never liked the Sauce. D: I wish Kishimoto would;

A) Stop watering down his female characters.

B) Write more about smaller, more interesting characters like Neji, Hinata, Temari, and you know maybe give them some personality outside of the steretypes they represent. D:

123. I would like her a lot if I didn't really feel like she was a ladder climbing, jealous bitch. D: I have no problem with her nudes, or her ambition with Playboy as a company, but I feel like she's a condescending bitch to other women associated with them.
