153. You do know that there is caffeinated tea, right?

157. Yes, you are a hypocrite. How is your reason any more legit than anybody else's? Sheesh. So what if somebody wants to learn Japanese because of Anime. At least they're branching out of their own country and learning about a new culture, unlike most Americans.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
105. Looks more like a High Elf from WAR, actually.

107. I didn't realize that liking robot porn was a prerequisite to liking Transformers. Get over yourself and your entitlement complex. No one's obligated to write about what you want to read.

123. Bullshit. Spoken like someone truly ignorant.

- Art != Playboy; typically, you don't beat off (or try to) to art.
- Art has historically featured women's bodies as the object as viewed through the eyes of the male painter.
- Women's bodies shouldn't be appreciated as anything, they should be treated as women's bodies. Not yours, not something for public viewing, not something to criticize for being bad or put on a pedastal for being great, but something personal and inseperable from the minds they're attached to.

131. Why pathetic hypocrites?

134. Me too. For free frozen yogurt. Mmmm.

145. How do people get off thinking like this? And at what point did Magical Wizards At High School become so much classier than animation? Christ, talk about full of shit.

147. My cousin is like this and she isn't even involved in fandom. Some people just get too emotionally invested.

157. Um, no. All the good video games do not come from Japan. Not to mention how much more difficult it would be to get hired there. So yeah, your ignorant reason for wanting to learn isn't even remotely better.

Agreed 100%. Where are you, OP?

(Anonymous) 2008-09-27 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi. I'm very severely dyslexic. My brain is just not wired to be able to "read" both the pictures and the words as one, so reading subs ends up taking up a lot more effort and concentration than it should and I miss out on a lot of the visuals.
Not everyone who says they're distracting or hard to read is saying it for the reasons you think they are. And the constant opinion that people who choose to watch dubs because subs are hard to read are lazy does absolutely nothing to help people like me who actually have a genuine reason (and not much of a choice, to be honest) to watch dubs be able to come out and admit why.

163 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-09-28 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
If you've got a genuine reason -- which you do -- I'll believe it. Thank you.

I think I was just ripping on the people that should be capable of reading subs and are in fact just being lazy about it.

123. Be that as it may, leopard print is the epitome of tacky.

157. You trash Japanese-learning anime fans for being "OMG everything to do with Japan is teh awesoem because it is a magical land of wonder!!!" types, then say that all good video games come from Japan? Something doesn't add up for me, there. Also, giving up on your dream because you're afraid that along the way some people will lump you in with a group you think of as losers is pretty lame.

140. Well, either your subconcious disagrees with you, or you find him physically attractive, which he is, hehe^^

157. I understand why you feel that way, but I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to learn Japanese because you love anime. That's how a good number of Americans are exposed to Japanese and the Japanese culture in the first place.

163. I understand how you feel, though I can watch something with or without captions.

[identity profile] haruhiism.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
157. Ok no, stop right there. All the GOOD video games come from Japan? You're absolutely no better than who you're criticizing.

Have you ever heard of Valve? Come on! So EBGames kind of sucks the big one (not to mention how badly it fucked up Spore), but that doesn't mean there isn't a viable industry in the US, as well as other countries. Sure, it's not as huge as it is in Japan, but it still exists. I do realize that the US market tends to focus on PC games, but nonetheless. (I also like to think Valve games are much better than the majority of the Japanese gaming industry, as much as I love my frivolous rpg games. Ah, my bias is showing.)

So yes, you are a bit of a hypocrite, especially if you think you'll actually get a foot in the door of the Japanese video game industry. It won't be that easy. You have the same mentality as someone wanting to become an anime creator in Japan. Why not try to promote those industries in your own country?

(Anonymous) 2008-09-27 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
150 I hope you are a troll. Cosplaying to "be the best" is no motivation to cosplay at all. Thinking like that is just going to get you hated. Whether you are Western or Asian, there's no point in cosplaying if all you want to do is be better than others, and 99.999% of the time there are always going to be people better than you, no matter how good you are.

And in the end, even if you think you are the best, you can't go around saying that you are for obvious reasons, unless of course you want to be hated. It's a way of getting attention after all, but keep in mind, unless you CAN compete with the top cosplayers in Asia AND the West, claiming to be the best will look very stupid.

It looks like you're justifying your fail by saying "I'm not Asian"

If anything, people in English-speaking fandom like it more when westerners cosplay well. If you truly are the 'best' cosplayer for C.C. You will have fans regardless of whether you are Asian or not. There are some people with bias, but it goes both ways. Some people think Asian cosplayers are worth nothing and just made of photoshop.

Though actually, that picture of C.C. is almost all photoshop of another person. It's stolen.

157. Someone seems to want to justify themselves a little too much. :( Honestly? Do what you want to do! Don't worry about what other people think. Japan is looking for more people to learn the language and work in Japan because of its declining birthrate, and you have an interest and you know what you want to do. Don't let some idiots ruin your future, and good luck! It's a hard language to learn...

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, that last part is a lie: I lived in Japan last year for about four months, and they're so xenophobic that the government isn't even considering getting foreign workers in to deal with the birthrate problem. Those few foreign workers who ARE in Japan are generally mistreated and ostracized. In fact, I read an article where a Japanese government worker actually said that Japan should focus more on their robotics industry so they don't have to rely on foreigners.

holy shit I just noticed someone's comment otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with this but...

ARE YOU SERIOUS? What video games are you playing that you can come off saying that the better video games come from japan. I'd say both the american and japanese industries are mighty fine, and other countries are starting to get their foot in the door. Maybe if you said you'd like to work in the industry and there are better jobs available for being bilingual I understand but. saying that japanese video games are BETTER is like saying japanese cartoons ARE BETTER. So yes, you're basically a huge hypocrite.

112, 114, 117, 142, 145, 157, 159, 163

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
112: Yes, I totally agree. I think that Kishimoto is sometimes sloppy when he's drawing bodies and faces, but overall he's very good.

114: It's one of those speech pattern things that are really hard (but probably not impossible) to translate. It's just a way of emphasising "it is". Usually only old men speak like that.

117: Well, the Uchiha mystery is pretty central to the main story... Anyway, the manga is currently focusing on Naruto, who happens to be my favourite, so I'm happy!

142: Er, it's just a tattoo, isn't it? Nothing to go crazy over, I would have thought...

145: What's with this hatred for the animation medium? It's just as valid way to tell a story as any other.

157: There's no bad or wrong reason for learning a new language. So some people want to learn Japanese because they've fallen in love with a small part of the Japanese culture? What's the problem?

159: I've often started to watch certain series to see what all the fuss is about. Sometimes I like it, sometimes not. I recently started watching Katekyo Hitman Reborn because of a BL game I found in Japan! The silliest things can make you interested, and it really doesn't matter. People care too much about these things.

163: Seriously. I'm so used to subs (we get a lot of foreign programmes here in Sweden) that watching things in my own language can be annoying. The mumbling! The too loud background music! So annoying. You're not supposed to read the subtitles instead of watching the image - it's supposed to happen at the same time!

Disagree about the quality of dubs, though. There are no good Swedish dubs (aside from a few of the Disney films). Probably because generally only programmes aimed at kids too young to read very well are dubbed, and they apparently don't notice bad acting...

Generally, my attitude towards dubbing is bafflement. Why would you want to? Especially for anime, where the Japanese voice actors are so skilled. But that's cultural differences for you, I suppose.

163

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a cultural difference, yeah. Here in the US, dubbing quality has vastly improved in recent years, so at this point they're on par with the Japanese actors (in my opinion). I love the Japanese actors, but I love the American ones, too, and it feels like a more natural experience watching a dub than a sub. I can watch the sub and normally do, I just watch the dub first.

So that's one dub fan's opinion? Sub fans are cool with me, though. It's just a preference thing.

150. C.C. is not Asian either if I recall correctly. I'm sure you can cosplay her very well.

I think the OP's point was that if you think of her as meat simply because of the type of modeling she does then YOU'RE the one who has a problem with YOUR perception of women.

Not the OP but anon 'cause the people calling themselves feminists will fuck me up.
