I wish US Americans would stop trying to push their own country's racial issues into discussions of diversity in non-American fandoms. Not every country's biggest minority is black people. In some countries, media representation of, for example, middle eastern people is more important.

I also think black Americans should stop trying to retroactively claim historical figures as black when they weren't.

There's a really wide swath of different Afrocentrist pseudohistorical conspiracy theories out there. Mozart, Socrates, whatever.

I mean, if you're asking my personal opinion, it's as silly as any other form of historical misunderstanding that attempts to find meaning by imposing modern categories onto the past. Doesn't matter much anyway.

It's more like claiming x historical figure was literally black for whatever reason

They're pretty much the equivalent of flat earth conspiracy people though

Also, the concept of "person of color" really isn't helpful when it gets to talking about racism in pretty much the entire rest of the world. Either becaues both sides would fall under the category, or because the groups facing racial discrimination would consider themselves white.

Exactly. A lot of the people getting racist shit thrown at them are very much white - like Polish people, for example. That's not to say that racism against dark skinned people because of their skin colour doesn't exist as well. But racism isn't always as simple as that.

And I remember the ridiculous mess that was the wank about diversity in Frozen, where Americans did a very sloppy Google search, found out there is the indigenous group of the Sami in Scandinavia and used that as an argument that Frozen totally should have had lots of dark skinned people because indigenous=dark skinned. Nobody of then ever bothered to look up what the Sami actually look like.

I'm of Sami ancestry, and weird as it was to have Kristoff be two metres tall and blond and using his reindeer as a horse, depicting the Sami as dark-skinned is pretty confused.

Yeah, like... okay my coworker is both blond and two meters tall, but while he's an exception rather than the rule he's never been questioned as Sami-descended because of that. The one dark-skinned Sami I can think of was adopted from Colombia.

There's a Frozen musical with a black guy playing Kristoff, and why not, it's a fantasy. Theoretically they could have had non-white characters if they wanted to.

But not because of the Sami. That was ridiculous.

I mean... stage plays are usually exempt from any "race-appropriate" casting.

But yeah, dark skinned characters- sure, why not. Or go a bit further instead of always only "black" all the time as a stand-in for all non-white ethnicities and include Asian characters. Or all of it. Just... don't use an indigenous group that's not generally dark skinned as your argument just because you couldn't be arsed to do your research and all it ended up doing was proving your US-centrism.

Technically, everything is xenophobia since race is a pretty loaded term that's usually inaccurate as hell and also steeped in Nazi-ideology.

But apart from that: It very much counts as racism depending on the definition you use.

White people can't be racist against white people. Hating someone for where they come from is 100% different for hating someone for the colour of their skin or the colour of their ancestors. Both are bullshit but they are different.

Yes, for right or wrong reasons I think southern Europeans such as Italians and Spaniards ect can get dragged into race debates in other countries where in Europe we consider them white and they themselves do too. It complicates things a lot.

Completely agree. Americans of all colors seem to find it hard to believe that other countries are different and do not have identical issues.

They seem to particularly like pointing the finger at Britain, presumably in an attempt to blame the hideous state of their country on someone elsee.
