Not a fandom, but I've been watching a lot of Judge Faith on Youtube. She's much fairer than Judge Judy I think. I like her. And the show puts up full episodes on Youtube, so it isn't just clips, which is nice.

Also finally started watching season 1 of the Rookie. It is kind of fun. I'm so so on cop shows right now. But this one feels a little different.

I just recently binged Another Life on Netflix and holy hell if it doesn't get a season 2, I'm gonna be upset. Not only is it really cool sci-fi, but I love that they take time to develop the characters and their relationships and the plot still clips along nicely. No need to sacrifice one for the other. IDK, it's awesome.

I don’t know if I’m into it yet, but I’ve watched most of the first episode of Carnival Row on Amazon. Pluses so far: costumes, creature design, concept. Minuses: not a big Orlando Bloom or (I had to look her up) Cara Delevigne fan, or super interested in their characters as a couple.

Still waiting: to see if the spoiled rich girl and her nouveau riche satyr neighbor turn into a Beauty and the Beast-ish couple; I’m a sucker for BatB stories.

Meh: don’t care about random gratuitous sex and gore to show that this is serious fantasy a la Game of Thrones. It by itself won’t make me quit watching, but just once it’d be nice to have a fantasy show aimed at adults where the sex scenes looked like all parties involved were having fun.

I figure I’ll give it at least two episodes to hook me, or not.

A while back I read "Ways to Hide in Winter" which I thought was going to be your typical thriller but was actually a lot more subtle than that, and very good. If you like mysteries or thrillers but you'd like to try something a little different, I recommend it.

I also liked the film "My Days of Mercy" and the book "Tell it to the Bees," but they are both about f/f romance so maybe that reflects my current tastes more than it reflects how good they are.

My Days of Mercy wasn't a flawless film, but if you are curious about (either side of) death penalty activism and like f/f it's worth giving a try. I definitely cared about the characters.

I cared about the characters in "Tell it to the Bees," too but I wish there had been more exploration of what it was like being queer in '50s England. Though I'll admit I'm not sure how the author would have worked that in. It was very good though and I was totally rooting for the couple. (I haven't seen the movie.)

I just started watching "Derry Girls" on Netflix, a comedy set in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, about girls at a Catholic girls school. So far, it's funny! The sarcastic nun is my favorite.

I've started reading the Judge Dee series. It's a solid set of detective stories in traditional Chinese style. Took a bit of getting used to the differences, but at it's core they are still recognisably classic detective stories, but presented in a whole new and fresh feeling setting.

Pretty gruesome in parts, too which is always fun.

I'm three episodes in on Netflix's new Dark Crystal series and so far I love it. It's got a great fantasy atmosphere, and while the use of puppets and animatronics may be limiting versus what they could have done with CGI I think the series is so much better for it -- everything is wonderfully tactile, without that too-slick sheen a lot of even the best CGI has.

Way to Go, Texas

Just days after another Texas shooting, new gun laws went into effect today removing most of the very few gun controls we had left. They can now not be restricted in places of worship. Schools will not be allowed to prohibit guns in locked vehicles in school parking lots. Homeowners and landlords can't restrict residents from lawful possession, even on their own private property.

Way to go Texas. More and more I'm growing terrified to step outside my door.

It's not nice of me, but I just thought yup, that's Texas all over. As far as I'm concerned, they've long since outstripped Florida as the shittiest state.


Oh yeah, and all that bullshit about how all you need to stop shooters is "a good man with a gun". If a shooter can successfully murder people in fucking Texas, well then...

What the shit?! Seriously?? There are so many things wrong with this, what the fuck! And what on top of everything(!!) is with being allowed to leave a gun unattended in a vehicle?! Aren't you no supposed to do that in the first place because the rounds might go off in the heat of car?!? Fuck off Texas!

Vent!

We probably just had a vent thread but I need to vent: I joined this auto club (not AAA) because it actually offered roadside assistance for bicycles and you could get a bicycle only policy. Which I did. But when I actually called I got sent a guy that only did cars, and when I called back they told me they only did vehicles like I was stupid for not knowing that. (By "they" I mean whoever answered the phone, who clearly wasn't the club.) I had a card in my hand I got two months ago that said "Bicycle Roadside Assistance," and gave that number, but that's what happened when I called it. I want my money back at the very least. (Fortunately I was at home with a bicycle problem I couldn't solve, not stranded somewhere, but still WTF?)

That sucks!

At the moment, I'm annoyed with my Dad: he keeps telling me off if I don't rinse out my mug after I have hot chocolate, but he never rinses out his mug when he has coffee, or his glass when he has red wine.
Also, last night he ate the only two of a particular chocolate, of a brand of chocolate we have to travel interstate to buy. >:c

Is there any simple way to get legitimately recorded TV episodes onto my computer so that I can save them? If we could save shows in the era of videotapes, we should be able to now, so if there's no way I'm gonna be really pissed.
