145. I agree with you, if he existed and I didn’t know his past I wouldn’t like him in real life, but I think it’s because I know what happened to him, I can sympathesize. No, what he does/did isn’t right, and no what happened to him doesn’t make it right, but I can’t help but feel his pain in some small way. And I agree, he shouldn’t have taken out his problems on innocent kids.

Glad to know there are still people who judge characters on something other than bastardized fanon!

157. I avoided Supernatural for so long because the fandom in general just seemed so crazy from what I've seen here but it's siren call I could not resist. Honestly? I haven't seen a lot of crazy ... but then again, I'm not really looking for it.

Tell me, SPN-ers, where is this crazy fandom wank and where can I read about it?

I'm not into Supernatural, but I'm pretty sure the one of the first places to check for some wank on it would be over at fandom_wank.

*sigh* For fuck's sake, isn't GW fandom over this yet? I thought they would have realised the BS of the stalker!Relena stereotype years ago. Goes to show that if you want to give a story a serious message you can't make the protagonists teenagers, or else every teenager watching will project their own hormonal stupidity onto the characters.

The real irony of this secret? The stalker-callers always seem to forget that this is the girl who tells her father that it's okay to leave her birthday celebration so he can go to work. Again. Mere days after her trip to outer space with him ended in total disappointment because he was constantly working then too. And when her father is killed, she comforts her friends when they're sad about it! This girl doesn't have a selfish bone in her body. Stalking and harassing someone for the sake of a crush would go against everything that makes up her characterisation.

And it's just sad when her fans - the people who actually like her - go around thinking they like her "despite" her supposed stalker tendencies, and feel forced to "admit" that she has some kind of huge character flaw that simply does not exist in the canon.

TL;DR: Grow up, GW fandom. You're making me feel even older than I am.

145. Honestly, I like Snape as a character because I understand what I think JKR was going for with him. I think pretty much every single character in the whole series is badly communicated through messy and disorganized storytelling, but I actually think what JKR ultimately did with (to?) Snape was kind of ingenius. By turning him into a pawn of Dumbledore (who, incidentally, I view as the real villain of the books, as absolutely NOTHING he did was necessary until he created the necessity -- he was just playing some immense and sociopathic game with EVERYONE), JKR made Snape into more of a tragic antihero than a flat, boring, cruel, one-dimensional cookie-cutter villain. I disliked him as a character until book 6, and only really LIKED him when she did that and granted him depth.

And yes, he was cruel. He was not a nice guy. He was also pretty deeply broken and being manipulated on an unimaginably disturbing level. Essentially, he gave as good as he got from the people pulling his strings. The metaphor is oversimplifying things somewhat, but he really is a bit like a pitbull that's been forced into too many fights and just snaps at EVERYTONE now.

Liking a character is not the same as approving of his actions or motivations. I like Snape because I think he's ultimately the best-written and most complex character in the books. He interests me. Traitors have always interested me. I kind of want to poke him with a stick and see what happens. :D

Seconded, about Dumbledore. I hate how much hate Snape gets and Dumbledore is still the effing messiah.

I know what you mean. I gringe when I think about Liz/Max. It was amazing though. The fans always seemed nice. Plus I have such great memories of sitting with my friends and watching this show. I had sold off my DVDs awhile ago. Seeing this secret makes me regret that.

I'm tired and therefore won't spend too much of my time defending someone who does not exist, but the fact that you invested this must hatred into one inanimate person is kind of amazing. He's not Hitler or something. He is an amazing character, both complex and deep. I agree on the fact that people who are "OMG TEH SNAPE HAWT AND EMO" are pretty scary and stupid, but so are the people like this, who are "OMG SNAPE IS TEH EVILZ", and for the same reasons. You see only what's on the surface, nothing more (in either direction). His character can really be argued either way, and the ambiguity is the reason he is my favorite character. I like him as a person because I find him funny, intelligent, and a morally good person. Do you really think that poison would have killed Trevor? And hey, didn't Neville turn out to be a toughass after all? I kinda did just spend too much of my time defending Snape, but hey, he is my favorite. Troubled, yes. Disturbing, a bit. But as far as disgusting or morally reprehensible? Eh, he's about on par with Hester Prynne.

I was doubtful of what the OP was on about concerning Snape's fans, but you just made it all crystal clear. So it's "morally good" to vent your frustrations on innocent children? As a teacher? And putting Neville through years of emotional distress is okay because he didn't break down from it in the end?

I admit I like reading him when he's around other adults, being a snarky jerk to someone who does deserve it (I fucking love Spinners End) but I hate the endless potions chapters when he's just being a sadist. Oh, and costing Lupin his job by outing him as a werewolf... urgh. I'm a dedicated Lupin fan so, yeah, I take this a little too personally.
