I loved the crap out of the first game, but I sadly never managed to play the second. I loved the first so much that I pointlessly went out of my way to get 30 of all my favourite cards (some of which were actually pretty crappy).

I'm still a bit sad Helena died in the end, though - she made a pretty good anti-villain.

I like the character (don't find him sexy; sorry, yicky!) because he's deeply flawed, we were both bullied, and he rose above. He had problems -- and he never overcame all of them. He did not want to hurt people... But sometimes he couldn't stop himself, and sometimes he had to for the job.

But if you can't get past the 'omg, he would have poisoned a low intelligence vertebrate.

Was he sadistic and vindictive? Yes. Was he a broken husk of a man? Certainly. Did this make him, over all, a bad man? Maybe to some. But you seem to think that he genuinely enjoyed all of it, when he expresses regret and frustration in his flashbacks. But of course, they're SKEWED from his perspective, right?

Divergent point: I bet you think James Potter was gonna grow up to be great man, a wonderful husband and father. Hate to tell you: He wasn't. Bullies that don't get punished keep bullying all their lives. They like the power, they like the rush. James would have never stopped -- he probably would have become a tyrant to his wife and child. If Severus is a bad man for doing things to children and a toad -- what does that make James Potter? Or did nobody think that Peter Pettigrew grew tired of being one bully's lacky and traded to another?



(There were no good adult role models in HP; hell, there were no good role models in HP period except maybe Neville who finally grew a spine and let his testicles drop.)

What was the secret about again? Oh yeah, stalking. :x Heero and Relena were never intended to be interpreted romantically. That's been known for ages. In fact, unless it was explicitly stated, none of the GH pairings are canon-romantic as we see them. I've always assumed that means that the pairings field is wide-open.

One of the greatest things about fiction IMO is that it enables you to sympathize with/see the humanity in people whom you would completely despise if you ever met in real life. The character in my icon thinks women are whores and goes around breaking people's fingers and manhandling elderly cancer patients. I think he's an amazing character. But if he were a real person, I'd want that smelly little psychopath behind bars, stat.

You can hate Snape all you want, but acting all huffy and morally superior to people who do like him? Uh...

Yeah but that's what the OPs taking issue with, people who DO like him as a person and not a character. There are whole legions of fans who don't even see ANYTHING wrong with what he did, think he's just a fantastic person, think he's the hero of the books, blah blah blah. I have seen fic and essays about him that are rational, that do appreciate his complexity as a character but with the assumption that yeah, he's a wee bit of a jerk. Nothing wrong with that. But when fangirls declare that oh he's just emo and a sexy misunderstood flawless genius... *bangs head against the wall*

im with you there. i just find it pretty hysterical in general, all of the people that have so convinced themselves that theyre OMG JUST LIKE their favorite character. 9 times out of 10? Late to the party, but oh well.

He clearly isn't the hero of the books, but without him Harry wouldn't be the hero either. Without the prophecy, Harry is just another rich Potter kid being raised to think he's the shit and walking around school like he owns it. Without Severus begging for Lily's life to be spared, she's never given the choice and she & Harry both die. He's not the hero, he's never meant to be the hero, but he is the source of the most crucial major plot in the books - the prophecy and Harry as 'the boy who lived'. He's incredibly important to the stories.

I think he's interesting, and I do think that he's ultimately a good person. He's definitely not friendly and clearly not a nice person, but I don't equate nice to good in that way. His actions are, repeatedly, to protect Harry and to keep himself in a position to be useful. He's more useful when he's in with the Death Eaters than he is on the lam with the rest of the Order. This means protecting Death Eater children (although he was the head of Slytherin House and I'm sure some of his behavior was also out of responsibility to their safety).

He's clearly socially undeveloped and has an extremely difficult time maintaining any kind of social relationships, but I agree with another commenter that I don't believe he takes pleasure in being cruel. I think it's learned because he has received so much cruelty - partly I think he's pushing other people away before they can reject him. But I also think that being bullied by James & co. as well as, apparently, his family members and later in a more manipulated sense by Dumbledore would have skewed his perception of what is or isn't appropriate behaviour, in particular when it comes to authority figures.

Yes, he was very intelligent and shouldn't have been easily duped. But intelligence doesn't necessarily mean he will be able to see the difference between his actions and the bullying he received from others, it doesn't mean that he will be able to differentiate between teacher-to-student bullying and student-to-student. Particularly since his bullying teaching style would have originated when he first began teaching at 20 years old, when his students were nearly as old as him and many that remembered the OWLs incident. He didn't enter a classroom where they would respect him because he was the teacher, especially with such humiliating memories of him. He would have controlled the classroom in the most effective way at the time, bullying to get their 'respect' (fear and dislike) to keep them from treating him like shit. Once the ball gets rolling, it's going to be hard to stop.

Also, I think a lot of it is that the characters in the text who bully "for the good side", James, Sirius, Fred, George, and Dumbledore are considered clever, strong, respected, lovable, and genuinely good people. This is what he's been surrounded with his entire life. Whether or not he thinks it's fair to the bullied doesn't change that it seems to be the way the world works (for Gryffindors) and while it is damaging to the people around him and to himself (no social contact or positive relationships outside of Dumbledore) I think it eventually would have gotten to the point that he doesn't know how to change his behavior anymore.

No, he's not nice. But what he does helps the characters achieve their most important goal. Without him, they would have failed. Whether or not you like him doesn't change how important he is to them, how greatly his assistance is needed, and how much he personally sacrificed to ensure that it happened. Lily doesn't even enter into it for me. It's nice that he loved someone so deeply, but I think his actions are his and it's more important that he came through in the end and did what needed to be done, that he accepted their hatred and distrust of him and assisted them despite it. That's what makes him interesting to me, and that's why I think he's a good person. He doesn't need to be nice to be good.
