145. IAWTS! I'll admit the epilogue wasn't the best piece of writing out there, but I really hate when people bitch about the heterosexuality. I mean, come on the likelihood of any of those characters being anything but heterosexual is very low. JK Rowling said Dumbledore was gay! What more do these people want!? The epilogue made me really happy. After all that tragedy and hardship, I was just really happy that Harry got a happy ending. Seriously.

113. Somebody else who's seen that movie! I tell people that it's not very good (because it wasn't), but that they should TOTALLY see it, because it was just a really interesting movie.

Then they look at me like I'm nuts, but hey.


153. I sort of feel like you might be misunderstanding what it is that people love about Donna.

I mean, I would actually agree that she wasn't really a bamf. (At least, not until the very end. And she had some help there.) But that IS what made her all that and a bag of chips - it's not that she was, "nothing special" (because I've always loved Donna and thought she was special), it's just that she was very human. Jumping to conclusions all the time, not being particularly aware of her surroundings (at least, before the Doctor opened her eyes a bit), not being able to handle the Ood song, overly defensive and putting up a front...those aren't heroic things, they're just things that people can RELATE to.

This is not to say that people didn't relate to Rose and Martha. They did (do), and many people find things to really dislike about both of them, too. But neither of them was as universally hated as Donna was to begin with - people generally found her terribly obnoxious at first. I don't think that Donna was really written any differently between Runaway Bride and S4 - I just think people got more of a chance to see who she really was beneath the front, and that made them love her. Donna was simply an awkward character to begin with, and I think people can relate to that a little better, because she wasn't meant to be a, "hero," wasn't meant to be, "destined for greatness." (Excepting the bit where she supposedly was, but hopefully you know what I mean.)

The story of someone who starts off small and gradually discovers they have more personal strength than they ever thought they did (like Donna) is BOUND to snag an audience by the gut much more strongly than a story of someone who was just born amazing and needed only the slightest chance to show it, i.e. Rose and Martha (who were MEANT to be "heros").

And having that newly discovered strength taken away from that character is therefore going to have much more emotional impact for many people. (Not all, obviously, since it didn't grab you, but many.)

If we see someone like Rose or Martha (who both risked their lives from the word go) lose out, we're upset because we looked up to them and feel they deserved to get what they wanted.

If we see something awful happen to someone like Donna, it's more as if that thing has happened to us. And if it's something like what happened to Donna, i.e. finally having realised that she wasn't worthless after all, only to have that completely stolen from her, well, that's even worse. Much more a personal loss for the audience.

Hence the huge upset in Who fandom over Donna's ending.

Not particularly with that movie, because I just found it "eh" and went on with my life, but I've felt that way about several different movies and books - "It wasn't exactly well written, but the plot is just so interesting!"
