Psst -

It can be all that AND Hollywood being racist.

How many times have they tried to push a samefaced white man onto us.

And it's not like leading men who wear lifts are exactly unknown.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it doesn't have to be one or the other.

+1.

I don't keep up with any actor news but if he isn't being pushed everywhere like every samey white-male lead is after a big role then racism is going to be a factor in that.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. And many of them have no acting talent whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, it could very well be. But the actor himself cited racism specifically and didn't acknowledge any other possibilities for why he's not a huge star yet.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-16 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Based on a Disney-label (as opposed to Marvel or Star Wars, which are Disney-owned but have a different branding and PR cycle) live action movie? Not all that often in the current remake cycle. Male Disney movie leads who aren't already well known for other things tend to wind up being the guy you might recognize if he shows up in something else.

Disney's tv channel is known for being a career launcher, and VAs and animators can get some serious mileage out of being in one of the animated films, but the current live action stuff, not so much.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-16 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not sure why we have to choose either/or here.

Samuel L. Jackson once said something about how there are people in Hollywood whose job it is to basically ask "How many explosions are there in this movie? Are there boobs?" The conclusion is that Hollywood is incredibly shallow as well as still prejudiced every which way, so when you wonder why they aren't making more movies about X or why so-and-so isn't getting more work, there's your answer: there will be people involved in the process somewhere who are more concerned with counting the explosions.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
He's short. He's short. He's short. For Hollywood. That's what you're going with? That's the fucking best you have? FFS

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No. That was one small part of the secret. I can see where it'd help your argument to ignore the rest, but that's not how logic works.

Tom Cruise is also quite short but that hasn't stopped him from getting roles. It's racism, buddy, nothing else.

I was just coming to say this.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say nothing else - if anything, Aladdin was a pretty bad movie in general and that never helps. But racism has a big part in it, probably.

He's actually just a bad actor. Aladdin was a terrible movie and no-one acquitted themselves well in it.

Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. are two of the top 10 highest grossing actors of all time. I'm not sure that "Hollywood Short" is the detriment that you think it is.

I'm sure there's racism at play, but he was pretty bland in Aladdin, which on a whole meet with mixed reviews. Not surprised it isn't doing him many favors..

I don't agree.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
According to IMDb, he's 5'8", an inch taller than Tom Cruise and James McAvoy. And while I do believe that actors sometimes don't get considered for some roles because of their heights (men, mostly because they are considered too short, women, mostly because they are considered too short), I don't think it is all that much of a deciding factor here. Probably, yes, ability has something to do with it - acting jobs can be sparse in comparison with the number of actors competing for them and if you aren't great, then you need something else: hustle, charisma, a vicious and/or stubborn agent, something that makes you stand out (in the "right" way), though sometimes, even if you are great you need that, too. But if you don't think racial discrimination plays a significant part, I think you are mistaken. It's hard to get a job if the casting calls aren't there (I'm willing to bet that many specify white, a few black, a very few any (a "blind" casting), and a tiny amount other (like Middle-Eastern or Asian).

It boggles my mind anyone can think it isn't down to discrimination. Because of his race there are fewer roles for him. And those are "Terrorist #2, Terrorist #3, and Cab Driver with Funny Accent." He's had offers for those roles and has played some of them before and doesn't want to play them ever again. Which means there are no roles for a POC who played the titular character in a billion dollar movie. Because of his race.

The dude who played Jasmine's suitor is an equally bad actor with an unimpressive resume but he's getting his own spin-off on Disney+. It's absolutely racism.

In an industry where most actors are "5'10''," when did being short become a, uh, shortcoming.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-16 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about him or his (lack of) recent roles, but couldn't it also be due to bad management? The secret mentions auditions which have to do more with someone being able to get you in the door, rather than being looked over for whatever reason. He might not even be looking for roles inside Hollywood at this time, there are other movie markets outside of America he might be doing bit parts for?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, because Rami Malik has cornered the market on short brown roles, can’t oversaturate Hollywood with TWO short brown men. Meanwhile we have a million potato faced mediocre white actors named Chris.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-16 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. 10/10 would still bang.
