The trans community are already unpopular as it is, do they really think trying to cancel Rowling will help them?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you truly believe that not harming their "popularity" is such an important goal that they should just ignore it when a Big Name Author is unapologetically transphobic? Maybe they have integrity or something.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
DA. Yes, they should ignore it and choose their battles better. She personally didn't actually say anything awful, so ignoring the whole thing might have been the best strategy.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL... So it's not worth taking that huuuuge step of criticizing her on the internet until Rowling personally beats up a transperson, or...?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
MTE.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Seeing as how they’re probably dragging the rest of the LGBT community down with them...

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So what you're saying is that we should pick and choose which LGBT peoples' equality we fight for?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, it's toooootally trans people's fault everyone hates us, and not, you know, right-wing rhetoric and neo-fascism on the rise all over the West. Fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s not mutually exclusive.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
As a gay woman, I'm not leaving behind the T in LGBT just because YOU don't like them. They're not the fucking problem.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT—oh no, we must shit on trans people, otherwise the mean right-wing fascists won’t like us! They’ll never like us, but they’ll be glad of any help you can give them to shit on trans people. If you court their approval by throwing other marginalized people under the bus, you’re as shitty as they are and can take a running leap off a cliff into a shark’s mouth.

Yup, the cotton ceiling and punch a terf reek of integrity.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Punching terfs sounds great to me.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes because human rights are about popularity. Fuck off terf.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
your concern for trans people is so obviously sincere and real, it's touching

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
My concern is for the rest of the lgbt community they’re hurting.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/06/24/lgbtq-acceptance-millennials-decline-glaad-survey/1503758001/

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, so your avowed point of view is that trans people must be sacrificed on the altar of respectability?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m saying pick your battles. Go after Trump and the Republicans who are actively hurting trans people, not a beloved children’s author.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a minor flurry of chatter two weeks ago and everyone who's not on f!s moved on.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Criticizing JK Rowling for open transphobia in no way precludes opposing Donald Trump.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds a whole lot like you're saying the feelings of trans people don't matter and that they should pick the battles YOU want to fight.

And do you really think there are people who are choosing to criticize JKR while... ignoring politicians who are actively harming them? Do you not understand people fighting more than one battle at once? Because I'm picking fucking all of them.

Did I grow up loving Harry Potter? Sure. My sister introduced me to the books when we were young. My family bonded over reading the books together and waiting for the later ones to be released, we went to a midnight book release party together for the last one. Had a lot of fun. Poured who knows how many hours into drawing the characters, taking sorting and patronus quizzes, sharing fan theories and thoughts on ships...

But my sister and I are both trans, and our lives and our dignity are worth more than a slavish devotion to someone who once wrote a thing we cared about.

I mean, I'm a fan of the works of HP Lovecraft and he was also a garbage person who believed awful, hateful things. It's possible to love a book or a series, and be nostalgic about the place it had in your life, and still be critical of the author when they spread harmful speech. This wasn't an innocent mistake, this wasn't the first time JKR has liked TERF rhetoric, this is just the point at which even people who hadn't previously been following closely enough to be disappointed had to face the conversation.

And by the way, it's not up to you to say what 'actively' hurts trans people-- because seeing a beloved children's author give voice to our enemies DOES hurt us. And being told to sit down and shut up hurts us further. We're not the ones dividing the community-- you are, when you ask us to sit on our feelings for your comfort.

Singling JKR, arguably the most famous author in the world is exactly the battle trans people should fight since she is such a high profile person. Attacking her draws way more attention than even going after Trump at this point because everybody attacks that guy for everything. But JKR's still on a pedestal so people are more likely to take what she says seriously.

Your source here doesn't say anything about it being the meanie trans's fault, genius. How about instead of blaming other marginalized people within our community (you do know what the T in LGBT stands for, right), you aim your bullshit at the people who ARE actually hurting us?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
When people like Jessica yaniv are all over the news, and South Park satirizes trans athletes as men beating up women, it’s an educated guess they’re the ones getting the most backlash.
