I don't care about JKR (death of the author and all that), but this was the straw that broke the camel's back, from what I know. There have been a lot of other things that twigged people before this from her, but they were smaller and much more divisive. This was just the one that was like, yeah no, there's no defending her here at all.

Yes, this. She was following a few people who had done transphobic things, one of her adult books had a trans character who was portrayed in an uncomfortable way, but there was always plausible deniability.

Until she turned around and went "anyone should be entitled to unlimited harassment of trans people with no legal or professional repercussions, that's just biology."

...I might still agree with OP depending on what specific behavior they're talking about -- like, if anyone's sending JKR death threats over this, that's never okay and needs to stop. But all I've seen is people being legitimately hurt and upset (mostly in proportion to how much Harry Potter means to them). And that's totally reasonable.

I really don't understand what your objection is. Like, I can come up with a lot of possible criticisms of callout culture, but I don't really see how they apply to this case - which you yourself describe as transphobic and bad.

And, for example, it seems kinda reasonable that something like this would affect the way a person looked at JKR's previous actions, because it tends to remove a lot of the benefit of the doubt that one might previously have extended her.

in my experience people have been talking about her racist tropes and other issues for ages only to be shushed and told not to complain or that it was a 'product of its time' or to look at the 'intention' vs. what happened. This has been building and with people taking the transphobia seriously it's been ample time - now that people critiquing her for valid reasons are not being shushed - to say so again.

She's a human which means she's flawed but pointing out those flaws isn't wrong.

God, I hate anti-cancel culture bullshit so much. If people say and do bigoted shit, other people are allowed to point it out and decide not to be a fan/customer/whatever of that person/business/whatever anymore.

I always see "well, we shouldn't judge people because everyone makes mistakes!" NO! Everyone does NOT make those kind of mistakes. Having a bad day and snapping at someone/being a little rude? Sure, that happens, and most people make mistakes like that. It's not the end of the world.

But racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic "mistakes" are not ones that people make if they're not racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic PEOPLE to begin with, and they damn sure better be called out on it.

The Potterheads in my family were much more interested in dunking on Cats and Rise of Skywalker than Rowling, so I think f!s really needs to step away from the keyboard and get a reality check on how interested people are in Rowling's twitter habits.
