I think Yennefer with a baby would be a complete disaster.

That said, I find her motivation... plausible with what we see of her early days. Fertility is something that she cannot achieve on her own, and she doesn't like feeling out of control.

She's done hella more stupid things than seek a fertility cure, in the cause of feeling "in control".

In short, she's an angry mess of a woman who makes dumb choices and I love her so much for it.

Agreed. I got the impression (I think it was even part of a discussion) that what matters to her is choice. She wouldn't have chosen it if she had a choice, but as soon as you take the choice away, she wants it.

(This is also why she's so angry at Geralt about the resolution of the situation with the djinn.)

It worked out for Morrigan from Dragon Age.

Fic idea: Yennefer on Goop.

Her whole story to me just screams written by a man. She wants to be hot, having hotness is how she gets what she wants, she wants power but she has no clue what she wants to do with it, no goals, no aspirations other than making people have orgies because if the male writer had power that's what he would do with it, but she needs some kind of motivation and she's a woman so she must want a baby because all women who don't have babies have empty lives and leave no legacy.

Uggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh.

I think this is why I don't like the character at all, post transformation. I thought she'd end up being...more cool? I didn't know there was a crazy baby quest.

It's very macho, and I keep waiting for the advertised complex strong female protagonists to emerge. So far they have not. Although I'm still nursing a slight grudge from when The Witcher was favorite in the puppy and gg spheres.

Having read the book summaries....

the entire thing has the "I'm a clever male writer" all over it and then the ending flops. Like "clever male writer" endings tend to do. (eyes Moffat)

Yes, I know, they're the book summaries. I hope the tv show does better. I don't have much hope given the rabid fanbase, but I have a tiny bit of hope.

(I think Bethesada put the games after the books for a pretty good reason. Oye vie.)

Yen was never that shallow in books, I loved her character and she actually made a decent mom for Ciri. Witcher 3 video game took it even further, where Yen stakes Geralt's adoration of her on knowing the truth and aims to break djinn's curse to see if the love between them is real or just magic.

Show's Yen is just completely different. Very shallow. Fun thing is, writer of the series is a woman and claims to be the great defender of female cause.

I think it's there, but the screenplay of the last two episodes is too busy being clever in bringing all the characters (including callbacks to half of the guest stars) into the last episode to really stick Yennifer's character development moment. Then there's the timeline issue where Yennifer gets over 50 years parallel to Geralt's 40 and Ciri's handful of days. So the "I'm sick of being a wicked witch" monologue is a tough sell.

I mean, the creator of the show and 3 of the 6 other writers are women, but whatevs.

Your opinion is shared by literally every character on the show who isn't Yennefer. No one thinks she should have a baby except her, and she only wants one because she can't have one.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-17 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is a good point. I kind of like how everyone else on the show is like "WTF, you'd be a fucking terrible mom, move on with your life."

Yennefer does only seem to want a baby because she can't have one. She also has a power complex, so I think she likes the idea of something relying on her - I feel like she had a line that said that to some effect, only more nicely. And I'm sure she also is rather lonely, and is looking for a connection, even though she's a total asshole.

It's bullshit that she had her choice "taken away" though. She defied orders to go through with an unnecessary operation so she could be pretty, and consented even after she found out the cost.

Overall, if her plotline absolutely HAD to be "wants a baby", which inherently is a bit cringey, I don't really mind how it played out. I didn't like Yennefer at all post-operation but she does have an interesting story and motivations, and I like that the rest of the narrative is willing to be sharp with her.

the whole ranting and raving about her choice being taken away drove me NUTS. she consented whole-heartedly! she PUSHED the guy to do the procedure on her! he said something about how she couldn't be awake during it and she was like nope, it's fine, so if they had only had her be knocked out with herbs and then wake up to find out that she was made infertile, THEN her rage and desperation to reverse it would make sense. but she walked into this with her eyes open, so I don't even know

(Anonymous) 2020-01-17 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate baby plots. I don't like kids in the first place so when a show goes full child mode I completely lose interest.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-17 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, it looks like we're going to get the erstaz family of Yennefer, Geralt, and Teen Ciri at least through the start of Season 2.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-17 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
Same here.
I hated Ciri's plotline in books, but there were so much more of the good stuff :)

I don't think the show really established her motivation well
This!!

The biggest problem with the show is that is throws a lot at you but doesn't tell you what's important. Everything is given the same weight. They do this with the world building (throwing characters, places and events at you but don't tell you what you need to remember and what not), character motivations (case in point), even the audio track (I hard a hard time to understand the dialogue at times because the actors didn't enunciate very clearly and the dialogue track wasn't raised much above ambient noise and soundtrack; I'm all for making it more "gritty", but not at the expense of comprehension).

That's what makes the discussion so frustrating, because even though it seems to me like everyone in this thread is coming at this from a different angle, every single one of those angles is supported by the show. I think it's all about purpose, someone else says it's all about choice, someone else says it's standard misogynist writing. And everyone's got an equally good point! I like the show, but talking about it is just tiring.
