I can kind of see it? Like, Boyle is obviously older, and white, but I can see it?

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
SA - whoops, forgot to write the second half of my post: I almost never like evil!(character) AUs, because I don't find being an arsehole very appealing.

No I'm very obviously not. I'm saying reality and fandom are seperate things and people don't exactly react to real people the same way they react to fictional people. And I'm also saying that insinuating most women hate female characters because of internalised misogyny is actually pretty misogynistic as well because it feeds in the whole "women are all just catty bitches who can't but hate other women" shit.

OP- Sorry I Should Have Specified, Here's A Picture Of Her In Drag

There's much more of a resemblance when she's in drag. I forgot to mention it in the comment the lovely secret makes made the secret from.

I really like the work of Ursula Vernon, who is an American author and artist - mostly fantasy, but she will also tell you a great deal about swamp ecology if you let her, or if she manages to get between you and the door.
I got acquainted with her work years ago on deviantart, then I followed her on livejournal, then I started reading her webcomic "Digger" - then I showed a few pages to my mother and SHE became a fan, and now between us we have nine of her books in physical form, half a dozen more on Kindle, the six individual volumes of "Digger", and the "Digger" omnibus.
I hope she comes to Australia some day.

I definitely agree with this, especially the "gratuitous" part.

Related, I had to re-evaluate my stance on gore when I watched Black Sails. I used to dislike all graphic depictions of realistic-looking wounds but in Black Sails they actually served a purpose, namely setting the stakes. Knowing and getting a feeling for what what a cannon can do helps to understand the plot, where the number of cannons a party has is an important resource. That was the first time I really got that gore can serve a narrative purpose instead of just being there for shock value or drama. On top of my head, I can't think of a show or movie that has used nudity like that (but that's probably because I don't watch shows where the plot might warrant it).

I love the idea of Boyle being a drag queen! We know he loves dressing up for Halloween, and he's very in touch with his feminine side. I fits canon well.

Anything by N.K. Jemisin. The Earthsea books. Any of Bujold's fantasy books (for some reason her fantasy works for me in a way her scifi doesn't). Howl's Moving Castle.

The Mirror Empire books (awesome worldbuilding). The first 6 books of the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey (I haven't read much past those 6, but the first 6 are fun with a great villain, plus the hero in the second set of 3 is gay).

Children of Blood and Bone. City of Brass. Throne of Glass. Godspeaker trilogy (evil religions are a trope I'm drawn to, plus an awesome female villain who is pretty sympathetic).

That UN study doesn't say 90% of women are catty bitches, it says 90% of women are biased against women. What is your point? Is it racist to point out that most people are racist?

Fiction may not be real but it's pretty wild to try and claim it has zero correlation with people's real life thoughts and opinins.

TBH this happening with slash all the time is why I think OP is right. When fandom would rather OOC cookie cutter the New Hot Guys then pay attention to the female characters, something's up.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure that's not what AYRT said. Painting all women with the same brush that they must hate women because they're not interested in all-women fandoms is pretty damn misogynistic.

Jane Austen, cause sass. To be honest though, I think most of my books are female authors? Even the mystery ones (ie not just the romance ones).

That said, I buy books based on recommendations or just the blurbs, I've never really looked at the author unless it's in a "Hey I have a book by this author and I love it" sort of way.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Fiction having some correlation with reality and applying one study about real life point blank to fandom behaviour even though there are myriads of reasons why women might not be tgat interested in female characters are not the same things. And if you're not doing this, why were you even bringing it up? And no, the study doesn't say all women are catty bitches but pretending that 90 % of women have biases against other women also doesn't say it's all due to internalized misogyny and yet that's the main thing you took away from it.

ayrt.

that is a very good point. i wasn't denying that fandom has issues wrt ladies, more that the 'same dynamic slapped onto every ship' thing isn't unique to f/f sadly. it probably happens with m/f too but i read very little of that so i can't say.

IA.

I was talking to my Dad the other day and he surprised me when he said that when it came down to writing crime/detective stories he thought that women writers were a lot better - especially when it comes down to writing a main character who is a woman. I didn't expect it because he usually turns his nose up at things like the ghostbusters movie with a female leads and the recent Doctor Who well before being able to watch them.

I probably shouldn't have laughed so hard over 'I can't fap to this.'

People like what they like

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't get this. Are people only allowed to enjoy some slash after they finished their helping of female characters content?

I agree when it is gratuitous. Random nudity that is out of place is not cool. But I do like nudity when it fits in with the scene. And as a bi woman I do want it to be more equal (and filmed more equal too because even when we get male nudity, often the focus is still on the woman and the two are filmed differently). I like naked bodies, and in the right place nudity can enhance a scene. But on the other hand, out of place nudity can ruin a scene and if people have porn so they really don't need excessive nudity in everything.

Sometimes you just gotta use the block button on people who are just going to give you shit. I'm very petty and that's basically what I do on tumblr and my experience on there has gotten better even if I am apparently 'censoring people' by not having to see their dumb opinions lol.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
>Painting all women with the same brush that they must hate women
There's no mention of "all women" or that they "must hate women"

>not interested in all-women fandoms
There's no mention of "all-women fandoms"

You are very desperate to strawman this argument

Of the 3 parking lots right near the immigration courthouse, 1 only takes cash and the other 2 were closed. The street parking was closed for construction. Because I didn't have cash (was asked at the last minute to cover the hearing after my dentist appointment this morning), I had to drive several blocks to find a place to park and then walk.

Also, turns out that my dentist thinks my jaw pain is from teeth grinding/jaw clenching given there is some wear on my teeth. Not surprising given how stressed I've been honestly. We're going to do a mouth guard for the night, but I don't know how to deal with the fact that I do it during the day too.

Finally, I really don't like Biden. And it looks like I'm going to have to vote for him. I think he's a step backwards. I think he's wrong for this country. I think people are voting for him because he was Obama's VP even though Obama picked him to pick to the more conservative side of the party. And I also think he's kind of sexist (not Trump level, but he's just an older man who has not updated himself and isn't really aware) and even a bit racist. He's not what this country needs and I don't know if people can get excited enough for him for him to beat Trump. Ugh.

I don't think you know what misogyny means my friend
