Games thread!

Ugh, me too. Huge pet peeve.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I think this is intentional to make the character more ~exotic.

But, honestly, there are very few people with eye color SO striking that it needs to be described at all. I'm guilty of this myself sometimes, I admit, but still. In reality, most people aren't going around making note of others' eye colors all the time.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually...same.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agree, it feels so unimaginative

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I like reading about what characters look like, even if their features aren't exotic or striking. As long as the writer doesn't make a big, clumsy production out of describing them, that is.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree about non english speaking shows but this one looks so fucking bad...

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
...I've just realised that I've been doing this as well

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to be honest here, I don't totally agree. With regards to the shows themselves, I think they are (with a few notable exceptions) mostly not good enough to justify the annoyance of watching in subtitles, and watching dubbed is not a real option because Netflix' dubbing quality is absolutely atrocious. They'd be decent genre content other than that, but with that added in, no.

And that wouldn't be a big deal on its own because, after all, not everything Netflix does has to be for me personally. In a vacuum, I agree that it's super cool that they're making those things. But so much of Netflix' content production is composed of these kinds of international productions these days. Their native English-language production is anemically weak and generally not of high quality, in my opinion. In that context, these choices - emphasizing non-English language production, doing so with genre shows specifically and not necessarily of great quality, and not investing in decent quality dubs - just irk me.

Thank you dearest comment secret maker anon! You're awesome!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you were a kid?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
With original characters, maybe one or two descriptions might be fine, if done well. If, as the secrets suggests, it's a character played by a Google-able actor, then it becomes less important.

And the key here is it's almost never done well. Especially if focusing on something as trite as eye color.
venusundae: mulder in his office (187 (structured waters roaring inside me)

[personal profile] venusundae 2020-05-20 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
the whole world is more intense as a kid! cut yourself some slack haha

i used to be absolutely terrified of the x files theme song. like a chill would run down my spine whenever i would heard the first few notes that dreaded whistle smh. and my parents were fans but i never said anything, just suffered in silence*~*~

last year i made it my ringtone. practically speaking, bc that whistle is rly easy to hear when it's noisy or i'm in another room etc. but also it's a jam, what was my deal?!

The same goes for making the "bottom" skinnier/smaller and/or more ~emotional.
venusundae: hyoyeon pouting with her finger on her lip (163 (the night's not over))

[personal profile] venusundae 2020-05-20 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
love that, honestly. good for you (and for your girlfriend)

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't mind a little tweaking. Like, if the top is an inch taller than the bottom in canon, I don't mind if he's described as being three inches taller instead. I find a bit of size difference hot.

But tweaking the heights slightly is one thing and radically altering them is another. If the top suddenly towers over the bottom that's going to throw me off.

"the annoyance of watching subtitles"
I never understood this shit. Most of the world have been watching subtitled american movies their entire lives but precious english speakers can't do it lol?! Unless you have a vision disability there's nothing complicated about it. I feel like it's just an excuse because they're not interested in foreign movies.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Please, someone fill me in on allllllll the drama.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, the amount of time my stupid ass has forgotten to check/use references - finish a drawing only to realise that I got the height of a character wrong.

Sometimes I try and fix it, but it's equivalent to that anime about the manga artist who uses boxes for his characters to stand on - and coming up with the excuse that standing on boxes is the new teen craze.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
YMMV I guess. I thought it was decent. Not great, but overall enjoyable. And the second one built on the first one quite nicely. I'll definitely be reading the third.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean it is creepy and has murder in it, so its kind of fair for kid you to have been scared. Hell, I know adults who are terrified of that movie (although its mostly due to having a fear of dolls).
