DA

It's always the same thing in this discussion - YOU GET USED TO IT and it doesn't take ages, and THEN you no longer have the problem of "I watch substitles instead of visuals". It's that simple.

Or do you really believe that non-English speakers never watch teh visuals in films/shows or are somehow gentically predisposed to reading subtitles...?

Is this show Turkish? The first guy looks like the dude who played Mustafa in the Fatmagul novela! (Que culpa tiene Fatmagul? I know it in Spanish lol)

This was probably worth a conversation, because I actually find "privileged race person learns that privilege is the problem" ARE racist as hell, but not in a "racist concepts exist and main character learns they are bad" way which is annoying because the audience is always privileged people but in a "while deconstructing racism book manages to reinforce certain terrible concepts through utter ignorance of more philosophical problems than their actual knowledge of racial privilege accepts" way. Racism has concepts which most people can understand, but it has have social-political enforcement mechanisms that simply understanding the concepts will NOT help you deconstruct.

This, so fucking much. Looking at you, Code Geass fandom. (And they'd switch anyway)

The is like the dub vs sub debate from anime all over again except this time it's for live action stuff. Some people just don't want to read subtitles. There's probably people who speak other languages who don't know English that don't like reading subs on American movies either and would prefer dubs (because those also exist not all of it is just subs and no other options) or a movie in their own language.

I don't know why everyone turns this into a "huh? so you're privileged huh? so you can't take reading subtitles because any language other than english is bad huh?" I watch a lot of subbed stuff. I've also watched subbed stuff. Some people just don't want to use them, some people can't for vision reasons or because they're dyslexic or whatever. I don't think it's that big of a deal. Personally I have watched Dark and The Rain and thought they were pretty good. I enjoyed Dark a lot more than I did The Rain but if Rain comes out with another season I'll watch it.

And also, yes, the shows are bad sometimes because they suffer from the same problem that all Netflix's originals have--they lean hard on a concept and expect that idea to carry everything instead of quality writing or anything else that actually makes a good show a good show. After you've watched it and thought "huh, that wasn't very good" it's off to the next concept show. And then the next. And then...their entire model is basically built off of getting people onto the platform by dangling things that might look good in front of their face and then keep dangling things around that might look good to watch.

There's different offerings for different regions. And Netflix pulls a lot from movies and shows that have been on T.V. before or were made a little while ago. So what's offered for each region they probably have a lot of shows in their language (that is if they come from a place that produces enough of them, I guess, I suppose some places probably don't make as many as others). So I don't think there's necessarily a lack of their own media but just that because of how big and widespread Hollywood and shows produced here (and Canada and the U.K.) that people watch a lot of them. Many of them have their own dubs over the actors though. Which is why I find it funny people act like they only ever get to see the subtitles (granted not all of them will have this option but it's not like it never happens).

I'm sure there's people who don't speak English who argue whether the sub or dub is better. People just try to turn this into a "check your privilege" thing because...?

I lean feminine and a bottom. But a lot of this "bottom is a personality type" stuff just repeats the same sterotypes that I've experienced through harassment and abuse. A lot of time I just don't have the energy to figure out the fine line between respectfully kinky and abusive anti-femininity that doesn't respect my personal boundaries.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched a lot of period dramas but I never really get into a fandom for such things. I just watch them and that's pretty much it. I'm sure you could find people to discuss them with it's just that I don't think a lot of them inspire people to write fanfic of them or anything.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really weird how a lot of people have this double standard. What would be unacceptable behavior and unacceptable to be celebratory of if it was a female character (even if it was just one scene of such a thing happening people would be discussing it and condemning it) it's perfectly fine if it's a guy! Like, if it's wrong to do then it's wrong to do regardless if it's a girl or a guy it's happening to.

It's just creepy to me that it's never treated as a real problem either by canon or by the fandom at large. FFS the dudes already traumatized and has fantasy cancer give him a fucking break.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
While this is true, pushing someone away unhappily why they make advances on you is generally considered a pretty hard and fast no. That isn't really something that's up for "interpretation". Maybe someone could write a fanfic where in their story he reciprocates.

But "saying no to a sexual advance is open to interpretation" is like...hmmm. Not good. And I doubt you would say the same if it was a female character pushing a guy away when he hit on her.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The "ha ha sexual harassment and not taking no for an answer is funny and okay when girls do it" attitude needs to die once and for all.

I wish people would stop presenting uncomfortable situations like these for laughs/fan service regardless of the genders involved.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. If Cloud was a girl people would be boycotting the game for it. Or at the very least not treating all this shit like fan service or whatever. It's like they practically salivate over him being pushed around in situations like these and it's honestly creepy because they don't even recognize that they're coercive. Don't know if I'm wording all that right.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I always make not of someone's eye color if I'm being introduced to them since I'll usually be, I don't know, staring into the eyeballs at least for a few seconds.

I get it's clumsy if the person is far away (everyone makes fun of the Twilight cafeteria scene for this). But some people (me) do make note of what color people's eyes are. Just like I sort of take in their whole appearance.

I think with characters who have known each other for a while you can do things like...note how the eyes change in different lighting or how if they get really close for an almost kiss they notice flecks in their eyes that they never saw before because they were always too far away to see them, or maybe part of the attraction to the other character is that they have really pretty eyes so they make note of it, or maybe they're wearing something or have makeup on that "brings out their eyes".

Eyes are an important part of the face for expressions so I don't really think it's weird to point them out or describe them. Especially if it's our first introduction to the character. I like being given details like that otherwise how I imagine the character looking is constantly changing and it's annoying for me to have my imagination constantly be handing it to me.

I know what you're referencing but I forget the name of it. But no one knew what the actual "problematic bits" were because THE BOOK HADN'T EVEN COME OUT YET. IIRC it was because slavery was a theme in the book and people took that and ran with it calling the author racist (she was Chinese, raised in France if I remember) because only racists would write about slavery (the slavery wasn't racially motivated from what I understand and was, again, if I'm remembering correctly based more the author's knowledge of modern slavery or something.) But I think she eventually decided to fuck the haters and published it anyway. I don't even know if the book referenced in the secret is hers or not but I remember the cover art being different.

Ah, the Gremlins movie always scared me as a kid too. It didn't scare me enough to not watch it with my sisters but it always gave me that sick to your stomach vibes. I think it's because I though the Gremlins looked weird and uncanny.

Some of the scary-movies-but-made-for-younger-audience movies are more creepy and unsettling than legit rated R horror movies. How I'll never know.

The Halloween movies always gave me creeps too and the stampede scene in The Lion King.

I dislike the smaller basically being put into the "emotional, blushing weak and feminine" roll because that's what top and bottom means to some people I guess. But I do like the smaller being the bottom for aesthetic reasons and because I like it when someone is both psychically and mentally controlled by the other character in dom/sub situations. Which almost all my NSFW writing veers into whether I plan to or not.

But there's difference I think between someone that chooses the top and bottom based on their subjective preferences they're aware of and someone who chooses based off stereotypes and whatnot and it's always obvious which is which even just based off the writing most times.

I also ship characters with multiple others and will pick and choose based off that. Maybe character A is a top with character B but they're a bottom with character C and a switch with character D and...so on and so forth. Some characters I can see with any and all characters in any and all situations and positions (M!Robin from FE: Awakening is forever my ship with anyone and everyone in any number of combinations) while others I'll just get really set in seeing them a particular way. And it really just comes down to preference and it's sort of the same thing to me as when you're creating your own characters and there's just a detail about them that comes to you and regardless of how inconsequential it is to be so adamant about it you can't really force yourself to imagine then any other way.

I'm also a big fan of switch-but-refers-to-top Astolfo. And he's someone who can successfully pass as a girl so...I think to me it has more to do with personality sometimes to and what I just think each character would be comfortable with or into while other people usually base it off of what they would want to see regardless of character.

Sorry, the Her Space Holiday song should be Japanese Gum, not Girlfriend Boyfriend!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, size difference is my thing with the bottom particularly being the smaller one. Some people just have a thing for it and as someone who also ships M/F and F/F it has nothing to do with the genders or anything. It's just...a small person being overwhelmed by the bigger person is hot. Sue me.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'VE NOTICED THIS TOO! And almost everyone I complain to about it is like "so you don't think masculine dudes can bottom?" and I'm just like NO. That's not what I'm saying, I'm saying people change the masculine dudes personality entirely and force him into the same box the small and weepy bottom was in because THEY think that's a requirement and the only thing they've really switched up, if at all, is when it comes to size. All the other stereotypes are still there. There's also this forced feminization aspect to it sometimes that it's like fine if you're into it but they all protest that being an aspect of it at all when it's really obvious they have a kink/fetish for it...

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a really good way of wording it and as "freeing" as people talk about erotica in fandom being it's obvious a lot of writers have hang ups and baggage they don't or won't analyze and everyone else just has to deal with it.

It's one thing to have a bottom who is smaller or perhaps even the more feminine.

It's another when they're basically the crying, helpless uke ripped from a trashy 90s BL and supplanted into fanfic who seems to be there more for the top's enjoyment than their own and the writer not being self-aware (or purposefully choosing not to be aware) about it.

An honest mistake anon. I mispronounce things all the time. Especially since there's a lot of words I know but there's never been an instance where I've had the chance to actually hear someone saying them. But I hear this is a common problem. And anything with a longer title I usually butcher because my brain just decides to give up.

But considering we're all in lock down you could say that we're all...

Homestuck now.

Re: Your favorite non-English speaking shows on Netflix...

Oh I watched that. It's so good! One of my favorites. When the second season came out towards the end I thought "oh okay so they're going to wrap it all up in two seasons" and then THAT ENDING happened and I was like HELL NO THERE HAS TO BE MORE NOW.

I definitely set the remote down for a minute just staring at the screen when I realized Aerith had set up an obstacle course outside the bedroom door so he couldn’t leave. I’m always hesitant to criticize anything about the character because her fans can be intense, but a lot of her “quirkiness” Really rubbed me the wrong way.
