Which characters did you love more than their writers did?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You know the disappointment when you instantly like a character only for them to be suddenly killed off or disappear into a gaping plot hole and never return.

Donna Noble. I will never forgive RTD for how he wrote her ending. It was disrespectful to her character in my opinion.

Finn in the last movie. Hux in the last movie. Really everyone in the last one, but especially those two.

Elizabeth Weir on Stargate: Atlantis. I lost interest in the show when they killed her off and in such a disrespectful way.

Shepherd Book from Firefly (really done dirty in the movie, I think).

Shirley from Community, in the later seasons. And maybe Britta by that point, too. Less shoved off altogether, but they switched up main character groups and pairings a lot more in the earlier seasons.

Also while I understand the show wanted the Jeff-Annie connection, I still kind of wish that Shirley had been with the main group and been the person that inspired Jeff to keep going in the last network episode. They all think they’re going to die, but I think while she would have been utterly sure she was going to Heaven and be way happier, she’d still fight to stay alive even though she had, in Jeff’s view, not much going for her on Earth.

I thought Wesley from Daredevil was the most interesting character. I was super interested to see where they were going with him. And then.

On a different note, Dana Scully. It's not that she didn't get enough screen time, since she got almost as much as Mulder did. I just don't feel like the (extremely male) writers ever fully understood her or recognized what a strong character she was. I feel like there was always some level on which, in their minds, she was Mulder's sidekick. And then when Mulder is abducted, instead of trusting Scully to carry the show for a little while as she searched for him, they immediately pulled a new male co-lead out of their asses.

danny on teen wolf, loved him, loved the potential of him. it never manifested into anything significant and then he disappeared without a word after s3.

kira too, loved her but she was tossed aside when the show was done using her ethnicity for a plot-line.

finn in star wars, i still don't know what the writers were thinking when they relegated him from co-lead into a side-kick in the following movies.

laurel on arrow, when they decided to shift from laurel/oliver to felicty/oliver the writers really had no idea what to do with her as a character and it showed.

Neal Cassidy, Mulan, and Belle from Once Upon a Time. Neal because killing him to make way for Captain Walking Rape Joke pissed me off, Mulan because ffs give the woman a girlfriend already, and Belle because as much as I love her and Rumple together (bearing in mind I stopped watching when Neal died) the writers clearly didn’t know what to do with her when Rumple wasn’t around, and frequently sidelined her in plots where her not taking an active role made no sense. I also got the sense more generally that they equated morally upstanding characters who believed the best in everything with being boring. See also: Snow.

And then there was what happened to Abbie on Sleepy Hollow and there is not enough what the actual fuck in the entire world.

What did you do today, FS?

Spent three hours downtown at a protest. It was amazing and energizing. There were around 500 people there with me. We marched between the police station and the main courthouse and back.

I'm exhausted now. And I stupidly forgot to grab the hat I meant to borrow from my mother. But it was so, so worth it.

Now eating KFC for dinner. Might watch a Who episode or two, but probably just going to crash. I'm exhausted in a good way but still exhausted.

I made sun tea this morning, it was 100° here again so a good sun tea day. I gave myself a mani-pedi, blue glitter fingers and sheer nude shimmer toes, I did a great job and nails look bomb. I read outside on my patio in the shade awhile, and now I'm trying to decide what to have for dinner tonight.

Just hung out at home. I downloaded an update that completely screwed up my computer so getting that fixed was a pain in the ass but I got it uninstalled and it seems to be ok now. Not sure how long to wait for another update to fix what that one did though.

I had an interesting conversation with my mom a bit ago and now we're texting back and forth sharing anti-Trump ads (I shared a few in a thread below).

Also I need to make some dinner soon because I haven't eaten since breakfast this morning.

And I wish I could be at the protest but can't stand for long without being in excruciating pain (got permanent nerve damage from a car accident several years ago). I might see if I can get some food and water to hand out down there, though (I've seen people on local social media talk about doing that and how the protesters definitely need water).

Worked. Donated blood (and they are going to test to see if I have had Covid-19). Replanted my cilantro because it was taking over my garden.

Now i have a working sink that drains and doesn't stink all the time, no fucking matter what I did.

The Monstrous Bebe's boyfriend is a nice young man, did it all for the price of a Mango Creame Slush from Sonic. :D

The lilac bush between my house and the neighbor's is blooming. Stuck my face in it and inhaled.

Wanted to share some good anti-Trump ads with you guys...

Oh, those are good. I love how they throw Trump's own words back at them.

These need to be played on every channel as often as possible, and shared all over social media where possible. And if they're able to somehow sneak them into conservative-leaning sites, too, go for it.

How do you feel about people being sad about "missed milestones" when there's a tragedy?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-04 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
So, a guy that was well-known in my community died recently from coronavirus and it's been pretty big news here. He was a lot younger than the "typical" people dying from the virus, and he had three young kids, including two daughters. The amount of "every little girl fantasizes about her wedding and her daddy walking her down the aisle and it's so sad that they won't get to experience that!" comments I've seen is bumming me out. Yes, it's sad that they will have to grow up without their father, but it's also sad that his son is going to have to grow up without his father, and most of the comments have revolved around the daughters (I guess because there aren't any specific customs involving fathers and sons). I hate the assumption that "every little girl" dreams about getting married some day, and that even if she does, her dad walking her down the aisle must be a part of it.

These kinds of comments extend to all sorts of tragedies, including when kids die. "Oh, he/she is never going to get to grow up and get married and have kids of their own!" Like, okay, I understand (what I think is) the larger point, that there are a lot of things that those kids won't ever get to experience, but not everyone is interested in getting married or having kids, and their death isn't somehow less sad if they didn't want those things.

I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into those comments (which admittedly, are from overwhelmingly middle-aged and older people, and this is the south after all, where people tend to be more old-fashioned/traditional), but it still bothers me.

How do you guys feel about these types of comments when people die in tragic circumstances?

(And for anyone that read my thread yesterday about my sexist gay friend, discussing this situation is what led to those comments. I didn't mention the context at the time because I kept trying to tell myself that I was overreacting and should just get over it, but right or wrong, it's still bothering me. And thanks for your comments on that post, everybody! I haven't been able to talk to him yet because he's been busy with work, but I am planning on it eventually.)

I'm scared of cops. I'm so so scared.I can't say this anywhere else right now because I'[m white and though that doesn't mean I have nothng to be afraid of, it t's not about me right now. But i accidentally read yet another real life horror story of police brutalith (against a white person who was sharing the story to point out that as horrible as it was, she still wasn't shot) and im so anxious and I'm so afraid of cops. Im so afraid.

(I have pills for anxiety attackd but I already too one today and idnot want to overdose. Can't ask my doctor, everyone's asleep. I'm going to distrat myself. I'll be fine. I don't eevn drive. I'll be fine.)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-04 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I’m sorry, anon. *hugs* I know how much heavy duty anxiety sucks and I don’t know if it’ll help, but I have a personal example of just how hard a white person can break the law and not end up with even serious jail time. It could be triggering because it mentions mental health stuff, guns, and cops, but no one was injured or died.

.

I’m white. So was my dad. He was schizophrenic, and once shot out someone’s front window, broke in, and when the cops showed up and he fired at them with his illegally modified to be fully automatic rifle, which had been loaded with armor piercing rounds, all they did was talk him down, take his guns away, and arrest him. He was released on bail and nobody pressed charges so he spent less than 2 days in jail. If he’d been black, it would’ve ended way differently.

You’ll be fine.
