CGI or traditional effects?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, I prefer traditional special effects.

Re: CGI or traditional effects?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-03 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't matter. Both look great when done well and shitty when not.

When CGI is used right it can be good (like in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) - but I think more often than not it gets over used to a point where a lot of the affects gets lost in itself and makes a pretty forgettable impression on the audience.

Whereas traditional effects can be amazing, of course depending on quality/budget - but for instance the animatronics & puppetry in films like Jurassic Park and Gremlins are just more memorable and part of the movie's world.

For either of them, I'm less concerned with pixel-perfection than I am with the aesthetic choices.

That scene where Isabeau falls off the tower in Ladyhawke? I can see the edges from the early Chroma Key. It's still a fucking amazing scene.

The Farscape puppets are, very clearly, puppets. They still convey incredible emotional nuance, pathos, and humour.

I don't care if I can see the seams of the effects. I care that they're beautiful and they support the story.

I find pre 2000's movies/tv much easier to visually digest in general, so my overall answer is going to be practical effects.

Absolutely love when practical and digital are used in tandem, however. :) Thinking of Dinosaur (2000) in particular in the moment, just fun as hell combination of cg, puppetry, and stitching together real and cg backdrops.

Both. CGI is useful for enhancing real objects/things to the extent where there's CGI in pretty much everything but the good stuff skits on by without notice. Bad CGI is obvious and off-putting, but so it bad technical effects as well.

Trad. It's a lazy example, but the T-Rex in Jurassic Park still makes me tense, but the CGI'd Rock in The Mummy Returns looks like an ugly video game cut scene.

I consider myself an overall film fan and feel there's room for both.

Of course there was a period where CGI effects didn't look over sparkling but I think that's less of an issue now. However, I personally believe we still haven't quite got things like de-aged actors right to the point it can be distracting.

I wish practical effects weren't seen as outdated and were perhaps used more but there are some things where it never looked right there either. Water and fire are difficult to scale. But having said that, I do appreciate a good use of models.

If it's entirely CGI (Pixar etc.) then CGI is fine... otherwise CGI over actual real objects and people always seems slightly in uncanny valley territory to me.

Re: CGI or traditional effects?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
practical effects certainly age better

Re: CGI or traditional effects?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I think the LOTR had the right idea when they used both.

Re: CGI or traditional effects?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
CGI is better in the sense that it relies less on having a genius-level practical effects person working on the movie.

That said, neither is really better or worse in terms of the quality of the film. It's like saying black and white is better than color for making a film, or whatever. They're techniques.

I like both, because some CGI is amazing, but i don't like it when it's overused and/or in place of actual story.

Some 'traditional' effects aren't that great any more, especially if they're not done well, but, for instance, Mad Max: Fury Road had no or only a tiny bit of CGI, and it was awesome, so.....

Just do the effects *well*....

Re: CGI or traditional effects?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
These days there's so much CGI that we don't even notice because it's not used in situations that are obviously fake or even obviously a special effects sequence, so most CGI is actually really good.

I think using a combination usually works best, or else use careful and creative writing to avoid special effects in the first place.

Regardless of CGI or traditional effects, the quality of the outcome typically comes down to money/time. Forbidden Planet is all traditional effects (obvs, it's from 1956) and looks GORGEOUS but it was also unprecedentedly expensive for a sci-fi movie at the time.

I like a mix of both. I don't think either is superior to the other. I just want a good movie that draws me in. I want it to look good. However they do that. I've seen both good and bad of both styles and I think both can be done both really well and extremely horribly. So I don't have a preference, I just want it done right.

Re: CGI or traditional effects?

It depends on what they're being used for. If the actors have to interact with the effect, then either traditional or a combination of the two. Most actors still have trouble with treating CG like it's physically there. Quality CG "costuming" is usually more effective, particularly if the final product is supposed to move fluidly, but only if they stay mostly away from the eyes and mouth. Full CGI characters are almost always at least slightly Uncanny Valley in a way that puppetry only manages to be if you have a phobia.

And if the choice is between cheap practical effects and cheap CG, practical all the way. Given the choice of watching two hours of community theater or two hours of 15-year-old video game cut-scenes, I'll take the local production of Little Shop of Horrors, please.

I don’t believe in the mindset that everything will change just because the human-made calendar flipped to January (or, alternatively, that if the first few days suck, all of 2021 is doomed, which seems like a common accompanying thing). That said, 2021 so far sure is...something.

How do you sneeze?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
When I sneeze, it’s usually either 3 at a time: 1, 2, pause, 3. Sometimes the third one doesn’t happen, but rarely is it 1 or 4. What are your sneezing patterns?

Vent Thread

(Anonymous) 2021-01-04 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
My conflict with my sister has reached a breaking point. The family has been living together for a while but everyone was planning to move soon. It's just been my sister, nephew, and me for a few months. She kicked me out on New Year's Eve for criticizing her parenting (she's verbally and emotionally abusive). My mother has been letting me stay with her for now.

I'm so stressed. Everyone's still expecting me to keep babysitting my nephew like nothing happened. We all hate my sister, she's been abusive to everyone, but she's using our love for her son to make us do whatever she wants. I'm tired of it. If I wasn't broke, I'd just leave and not look back. But I don't even have a car since mine died recently. Really not sure what to do here. Just needed to vent.
