I'm glad VPN exists, but there's too much traffic sometimes and I'm getting sick of things that don't ever load, despite having a new computer that can handle plenty. I have to disconnect to see anything anymore. What's the point in using VPN if you can't do anything with it? (But anon, you say, everyone uses VPN, so you should expect traffic! This is true, but it's been unbearable lately, as in Youtube comments and Imgur not loading for me.)

I hear you on this. My employer was using a low-traffic VPN for years, and I was one of the few using it on a daily basis because I have health issues and I was permitted to work from home...

Then the pandemic hit and if I got disconnected after about 10am, good luck getting back on, and if I did, everything was at a crawl because suddenly EVERYONE was using it to work from home.

My story had a happy ending because after I and others complained constantly our employer upgraded to something better, but oh man. Slow loading is terrible and anxiety-inducing and I feel for you.

I need to get something off my chest, and that's why I made this thread. I'm not sure how Dreamwidth collapses comments, so pardon if my attempts are a bit extra.

I’ve had my cheap particleboard desk for about thirty years now and it’s been slowly breaking apart these past few years. The keyboard slider broke today and I can’t patch it up, so I need a new desk, but I’m flat broke and in debt, so I can’t afford a new desk. Also, I guess I’m unreasonably attached to my desk because I don’t want to chuck it out, but I can’t type comfortably without the keyboard slider.

What's a keyboard slider? Is that the tray thing under a desk that a keyboard is supposed to sit on but that I never use because it's too weirdly low and awkward?

Wood glue and clamps? Or you can replace just the tray or slider hardware.

I always think it's a nice thing for the environment to keep old furniture chugging along as long as possible, if you can, replacement funds or not.

I feel close to the end of my teather and the only thing that's stopping me from killing myself is the fact that I'm the main carer for my parents and brother - but otherwise I'm just going through another crying fest alone and realizing the older I get the more worthless I become, especially when trying to apply for jobs with fuck all on my Resume and zero references (all the places I had been volunteering for years have either closed up and/or the people who would have given those references; have either died or left without a trace of contact since most only wanted to be contacted through the organizations).
I'm just coming to the conclusion that once my family is gone I might as well off myself and be done with it.

Oh nonny. I'm in a similar place and it's just so fucking hard. You're not worthless, it sounds like you've been working your ass off for years. I hope something comes your way nonny. Take care of yourself.

Those organizations that are gone/people who have passed are still references, but beef up what you did. Nobody knows now you weren't a manager.

Take care of yourself as well as everyone else, anon. Are there organizations you can call on? I got to that point and found that yelling for help in all directions really did help. Otherwise people will just let you get on with it and go under, the lazy bastards.

Could you manage to put that you're a caretaker on your resume? It def takes skills, responsibility, and emotional fortitude to do that. I know it's tough out there.

I've taken up writing as a hobby in recent years. I found out today that my friend thinks it's 'pretentious' of me.

I'm kinda heartbroken. The reason I got into writing is because I got sick and suddenly had no money or energy for virtually any other activity. It's extremely cheap and physically undemanding. I'm not necessarily good at it, so I don't share my stuff with anyone. I don't even talk about it much. I don't know how she can think that about me. :( :( :(

She sounds like an awful friend with weird issues about writing that she's projecting onto you. I hope you continue to enjoy your new hobby and I really, really hope you find better friends.

Hobbies come in all shapes and sizes, and there's nothing wrong with choosing one for the reasons you did.

I discovered this week (through witnessing a conversation where I could read half of it but knew that half was missing) that my auntie has blocked me on social media. I don't even know what I did, she just deleted and blocked me some point over the past few weeks...no interaction at all.

I know she blocked me because the conversation was on my sister's Facebook page and weirdly my auntie didn't think to block my husband as well...so he could see her comments and confirm it was her talking in the missing half of the conversation.

I'm just...I don't even know what I did? I'm trying to not let it bother me but it kinda does when family does something like that and don't even offer you a chance to say sorry for whatever you did?

Found out one of my fave musicians passed away and all i can find on articles on her death on Facebook are the 'who' comments and transphobia.

That curfew is really wearing me down. I'd rather have a full quarantine again instead of that (and we might just get it in a few days anyway.)
What do you mean I have to be home by 6PM? when work ends at 5:45? when am I supposed to get my groceries? I already hate shopping during weekends, even before the pandemic, there were always too many people everywhere now it's even worse, how are we supposed to keep distanciation when everyone has no choice but to be there at the same time instead of spreading out on the whole week?

Winter sucks during a good year. Covid-times winter extra sucks.
