The Communards' cover kicks ass. I will dance like a maniac to that version :D.

Hell, yeah, "Wannabe". You can't go wrong with the Spice Girls in general, really.

DA

...I relate just a wee bit too well to your dad. Not the separation part, but the whole thing of not wanting to get rid of those kinds of toys...I get that.

Agreed.

When I was a teen in a learning slump, early seasons Rory Gilmore was a beacon of hope for me. Bright, difficult-ish upbringing, super smart, but still loved and respected by most around her.

Young adult / college student me wondered how she could become a needy stupid crybaby (The Yacht thing, crying after logan, doing that stupid "what am i gonna do after college" stunt).

Adult me rewatching the series and the "sequel" makes me realise that Rory was just as much an entitled, snobbish b*tch she desperately trued not to be.
I also think she got knocked up on purpose because she didnt know any better what to do for her future, which is a trope I absolutely detest. "We need an end for that character arc we butchered - yeah, surprise baby it is."
Season 1/2/3 Rory would be ashamed of her future self.

I'm pretty certain I have read a hot take about Pygmalion being an incel. I've definitely read it about Dante for writing a self-insert novel based on mythology, so in any case I'd not be shocked.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-02 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I mean...despite it being literally "man falls in love with statue he creates" (I couldn't remember at first lol I looked it up) it's a greek myth and in spite of myths and literature being good ways to teach us things so we don't have to suffer through experiencing themselves? there are no gods to tap our novels or paintings or statues and make the characters real people, so how we handle our infatuations with our own creations is beyond the scope of the myth. if it has anything to say it's that the originator of the myth fully understood that sometimes we creatives get so caught up in our creation that we wish it was real, and that's something common to the human condition for thousands of years. that's it. the rest is fiction on par with human beings being thrown into the sky to become constellations.

TW abuse

I definitely believe Marilyn Manson's accusers and I'm happy that he's facing at least some consequences for the vile shit he's done. However, his older music has been such a big part of my life that I just cannot give it up.

Sorry, wrong place!

I've only started venturing back into reading fic instead of just writing, liberally using tag filters for a very specific handful of kinks layered over monsterfucking and...yall do yall, ykinmkatok, but I really have to side-eye cramming about 25 different kinks into a one-shot that's less than 2000 words. I'm also getting super tired of finding actual porn tropes that I find genuinely unsexy being written into fic, down to the stupid faces, the bad porn dialogue, and squirting. Maybe I'm just a sad monsterfucker whose kinks are only being written by teenage boys who have only seen naked girls in porn.

Eh, if Jane Austen was raised in this time you'd have a point.

If she was time travelled to this time, she'd think we're all fucking degenerates.

"Wait, a man may marry another man? And act the part of a woman? And you accept this as normal? Send me back. I have much work to do to correct this abhorrent society before this ever happens."

I mean, has JK Rowling taught you nothing about assuming "This person is a feminist in the context of her own life, so clearly she's be just as progressive as me and supports the things I like unconditionally!"?

I'm stunned that this is only hitting now. Dita Von Teese outed him back when I was a teenager. No-one seemed to give a shit. I have no idea why everyone is pretending to care all of a sudden.

Ok, Most people do care and this is the first they're hearing about it. What I mean to say is "I have no idea why the press is pretending to care all of a sudden".

I see you've never read fanfiction.

I like the Honor Harrington books so MUCH more than the Vorkosigan books.

I keep trying to read the Vorkosigan and it's so terribly written it's just incredibly slow going. "Keep reading it! It gets better!" Really? WHEN? The Honor Harrington books are great from page 1.

Why do people keep telling me I should be reading Vorkosigan instead of Honor Harrington? You are all so wrong.

It's in the state where the pandemic is under control right now, like they have a few cases every now and then. It's a whole ass festival too, so it's not like he was the only one holding a concert, but still. I'm just upset because thinking that it's his last show and I never got to see him made me cry for days. It was cruel.

As someone whose OTP has an EXTREME age gap, I kind of relate to this in a weird way. Basically, what I relate to is the sense of, like, just because I like Thing X, which is generally regarded as quite kinky, does not automatically mean I'm an indiscriminate black hole of kink. I neither need, nor want, every single available kink topping on my fic sundae, just because I went with licorice ice cream instead of vanilla.

People in this thread have some very weird ideas of what love is. I love my dog, but I don't think he's my equal and deserves the same rights as I do. I don't want my dog to "challenge" me, I want him to obey me. That doesn't mean I don't love him. If a robot could look and sound enough like a human to fulfill my social needs, I would marry them. And the fact that I could customize them to never get bored with me talking about canons I love, and to have exactly the same sexual preferences as me, and political views as me, and to always be in the mood of going out when I am in a mood to go out, and to stay in when I don't feel like going out, all of that would be a feature, not a bug, and would definitely make me love them more.

The most I'm finding from DVT is this:

In 2007, Dita spoke with Harper's Bazaar about the divorce. Though she didn't want to share explicit details, she said that she went into the marriage with an expectation for monogamy. She also said that she decided to move out of the home she shared with Marilyn as a result of "something bad."

"Let's just say that it must have been something pretty bad for me to move out of the house after six years together and to pack up my stuff on Christmas Eve. I loved him, and this was the most painful thing I have ever had to go through. It's been really difficult," she explained.

"It's not what I expected when I got married, and I felt like I'd found the man of my dreams. But sometimes things change overnight, and you have to make a choice as to whether you're going to respect yourself and say, 'I'm not going to accept this. This is not okay.' I'm not the first woman, or the last, to go through what I'm going through," she continued. "I just keep reminding myself of that."

Abuse is definitely a strong possibility here, but we're not given anything conclusive, so it's really not that surprising that it didn't blow up into a huge thing in the press. And of course, the fact that DVT is famous for her burlesque career undoubtedly didn't make people take the things she was saying more seriously (which is deeply sad and fucked up, but well, society is shit like that). :(

Re: What are you currently watching?

ayrt

It's decent for me - the scenery is gorgeous and the actors are good, but I'm not really connecting with James Herriot and I'm not sure why. I liked the old series fine, but I never actually sought it out (my mom watched it because she was and is a fan of the books), so I didn't think it made that much of an impression on me. Clearly I was wrong, since that's the only reason I can think of that my brain keeps telling me that this James Herriot just isn't quite right. I don't know, it's really weird.

It sounds like you live in Australia. You might want to clarify that. Holding a concert hits very differently for the US-based people right now, there's no such thing as a safe state over there.

Yes, it's the people in the thread who are the weird ones.......

I blame the writing not the character. Which is to say, I reject the revival and refuse to hold revival!Rory's deep character flaws against early-seasons!Rory.

Later-seasons!Rory is certainly more flawed, but I found it reasonable to give her a rough burn-in period when she hit early adulthood, given how common that is irl - especially among people who were golden children throughout childhood and adolescence. I'm just baffled that for the revival they decided to max out all of Rory's worst later-seasons traits, and jettison all her best traits.
