Give me your most gratuitous hurt/comfort. I don't care about fandom.

Horror movies that have bad critical reviews that you think are great

Looking for those hidden gems.

I'm gonna put it out there, even though it had terrible reviews at the time and there are plenty of proper horror buffs who'll disagree with me: in my opinion, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is actually good. I mean, it has fuck all to do with the rest of the franchise, there's no Michael Myers, and it's got more in common with the sci fi horror of The Thing than with the slasher horror of the other Halloween movies. But if you set aside the natural expectations that come from being called Halloween III, the underlying movie is a super solid horror movie with some great special effects and a genuinely terrifying premise.

That's the one that Nigel Kneale wrote the original script for, right? Which makes sense with the sci-fi-horror vibe.

In some ways I think the movie was ahead of its time - the whole idea of a horror franchise that wasn't necessarily about having the same villain in every movie is something that clearly can work, just look at the Conjuring films

Thanks! I am actually watching Halloween (the first one) with my sister next weekend since she has never seen it. I'll give the third one a watch as well.

Event Horizon had fairly negative reviews, but I think it is an amazing movie. It is actually probably my favorite horror movie.

I've seen that one a couple times. Great movie!

Sunshine (more psychological horror until the ending, which I am sort of meh on), but I love the movie and will never turn down anything with my boy Cillian.

Thanks! I saw this a long time ago and have been meaning to rewatch it. I think it is on Hulu.

Going by Rotten Tomatoes, these are the ones that I enjoyed watching and thought were much better than their critical consensus:
41-50%
Critters
Final Destination 2
Flatliners
The Mummy Returns
Silver Bullet
Lake Placid (okay, only slightly better)
Final Destination 3
31-40%
Nightbreed
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Relic
Resident Evil
Underworld
Halloween II (1981)
21-30%
The Bride
Blade: Trinity
Urban Legend
11-20%
Ghost Ship (this is not a good movie, but it is way better than this, if just for the first scene alone – it also has a hell of a cast)
The Seventh Sign
0-10%
The Covenant (this is a bad movie, but not this bad)

And these are the ones that I enjoyed watching, but agree with their critical consensus (or maybe even thought they were worse)
41-50%
The Meg
Scream 3
31-40%
Anaconda
Village of the Damned (1995)
21-30%
House of Wax (2005)
Van Helsing
11-20%
Dracula 2000
Jaws 3-D

Cold Skin. It's horror-ish, and personally I think it's a genuinely good movie, to the point where I'm straight up baffled by its 48% critical/56% audience score on rotten tomatoes. It'd be in the high eighties for me.

Distraction things/tips

[personal profile] philstar22 2021-03-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Looking for recs of things or ideas for ways to distract myself when pain gets particularly bad. What sort of methods have other people used? What things have worked?

Re: Distraction things/tips

(Anonymous) 2021-03-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Meditation. This is so stunningly boring that I either go to sleep in sheer self-defence, or get up and start moving around slowly.

Scrolling.

Listening to audiobooks with my eyes closed. Preferably books I already know, so I don't have to follow a plot.

A nice hot bubble-bath.

Good luck. Pain is the pits.

Normally at work I listen to music through headphones so I don't have to listen to the people around me talking but the other day I had a headache. Youtube happened to recommend me this nice, chill, "Japanese village" atmospheric thing. It was really nice and didn't make my headache worse to listen to (the way my usual playlist probably would have). I actually ended up finding it again earlier today so I could relax listening to it.

Hot baths or showers. In either case I try to turn the lights down as far as I can make it without being impossible to see. But since the headaches usually come with light sensitivity, it helps if I don't have to have the lights on much.

Finding myself rewatching Person of Interest, anyone got any FinchReese fic recs? No preference for AU or canon compliant, but if it's AU, GOOD AU please. >_>

any fanfic, books, series, anything, good for Human/Nonhuman? Maybe even a fandom that just has a human/nonhuman pairing that gets stuff for. I don't care if f/m, m/m, f/f, or other.

Asimov's Robot Detective novels, starting with The Caves of Steel. It really ramps up in the third book, The Robots of Dawn. Most of the fic in that fandom is for Detective Elijah Baley/Robot Daneel Olivaw.

As far as fandoms go... Hellboy, The Shape of Water (thanks, Guillermo del Toro!), Gargoyles... most of the rest I can think of off the top of my head are cursed/monstrous-looking human/regular human.

Ooh, Galaxy Quest had octopus alien/human, although she spent most of her time looking human.
