How much do you lockdown your fic?

Well, I post them on AO3 and Tumblr under a username that isn't associated at all with my real name and that are linked to an email that I use only for fandom stuff and don't connect to any work-based stuff. But I use my regular computer for them.

Mostly I just make sure my parents aren't anywhere nearby when I'm writing because I don't want them asking questions about what I'm writing, although I could probably come up with a decent lie if necessary.

I worry a lot about this. If you're tech savvy it probably wouldn't take much to connect my fic to me, although I use pseuds. I definitely worry about that.

I used to be dumb and post fic under my full real name, then more people started using the internet (like 1997?) and I realized maybe that wasn't a good idea when I was looking for employment, so I got paranoid...

I still use a psuedonym and actually sorta have two, one for the stuff I don't mind doing with my family (Animal Crossing and Pokemon Go for instance) and kept my other for the sketchier stuff like fic and shippy vids. I'm sure someone could figure out the latter is also me if they were paying attention and felt like following down some rabbit holes, but oh well. I live independently, my job is with a bunch of fellow nerds since I'm in IT, and my church is sex-positive and LGBTQ+ friendly. I'm not going to lose anything of value if someone finds my gay porn.

When I still wrote fanfic on a regular basis, I used to just store it on my own computer but gradually got paranoid about dying suddenly and my family finding it. Not that it's full of porn or bad or anything, it's just... something private that I do, that I've never shared with my family. I eventually started composing it and keeping it on Google drive, attached to an e-mail account created specifically for fandom.

Re: How much do you lockdown your fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I have an email that I only use for fandom stuff and a username that's not known to anyone I know IRL. All my fics are password protected on my computer and I usually only write at night, but that's mainly because I'm too busy during the day and when I'm not, there are too many distractions.

Re: How much do you lockdown your fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I will never post under my real name, though I am using an old fandom nick for that purpose. I do everything but work stuff from this computer, but everything fandom related is tied to fandom e-mails and accounts. Nothing tied to my real name. I keep fic on external drives. I don't care if AO3 knows I post from my real IP or via VPN.

Fun story: I was just about to make a thread here about how I posted a ficlet to AO3 tonight that proved wildly popular within the first two hours, and I'm now considering posting it to my otherwises fairly quiet main tumblr and hence "outing" myself as a ficwriter to people who follow me mainly for the occasional bit of meta.

So to answer your question: I publish my fic, but I've kind of been trying to keep it separate from my main. I don't really know why, though. None of my fandom accounts have any connection to my RL (different e-mails and all), except for the occasional mention of my nationality.

It's just under a couple gmail names on google docs, so....*shrugs*

I don't *hide* it, but I'm not printing out fic at work, either. Needs to be a bit of a divide, there, generally.

Re: How much do you lockdown your fic?

I mean, I post under a username and use a nickname that can't be traced back to my real name at all. I'm sure that if you really wanted to you could make the connection, but ultimately I don't know why you'd bother. A few people IRL know I write fic, but they're all very geeky as well so it's not like it's a huge risk lmao

Re: How much do you lockdown your fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I want so badly to write my ill-conceived, stupid-assed, weird as shit, self-insert+character, first person pwp fics using an assumed handle (I even have a handle picked out!!!), but.........1.) probably no one will read it, and if they do 2.) no one will like it, and 3.) I will be found out and deservedly mocked for my foolishness. So I guess it's the former rather than the latter, OP. Lol.

I have a fandom/AO3 username tied to a gmail account and gdocs, but I use it for paypal and shit, so...I guess if you were the FBI you could find me, but I don't care.

I'm not running for office and I'm too old to get a job with the FBI myself, and I'm not a parochial school teacher, so I doubt anybody would care about my Avengers slash. My spouse knows about my hobby and we're not having kids. My friends know my real identity from conventions and stuff.

For real, though: if I post something super extra kinky I usually do it anon on a kinkmeme or under an unconnected pseud.

I feel for people in countries that don't have the same freedoms in terms of content posting and speech.

Fandom in other languages

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone got any experiences to share of using non-English fandom platforms like Pixiv or VK? (I think that's the Russian one?)

Re: Fandom in other languages

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the fandom for my pairing is on Pixiv. I've been trying to get my head around the tags and getting nowhere lol. I like the fact it's less restricted than Western sites but at the same time find some of the content very disturbing.

Very curious about the Russian platform that was mentioned here the other day. The one someone was saying was uber comprehensive, the fans could point you in the direction of copies of rare canon things, etc.

Hmm, I've always browsed Pixiv because that was pretty much the only way (other than 4chan, where people... reposted from Pixiv!) to find fanart of obscure AOTS back then, before Tumblr or Deviantart's "revamp" and later every single artist's migration to Twitter/Instagram tags. Anyway... It's lovely, full of great quality art. I don't have much to say other than this. The same goes for Nicovideo and similar communities. As for comments... people aren't... very woke, to say the least. The same applies to communities in my native language though, I assume English speaking fandom is the only (or one of the few) exception(s).

Got about 3-4 hours of sleep, so that's how it started. Plus still have the really bad jaw pain. Wasn't the worst day ever, though. Did get the 3 hours of work I wanted to get done.

Watched some fun animal vids on Youtube. Now I'm listening to Sabaton songs. As soon as the repairman leaves, which should be about 10 minutes, I'm going to let my cat back in from the porch and feed her dinner. Then do my dinner and probably sleep soon.

Better than expected! My body was really terrible to me last night but maybe it got finished with what it needed to do, and so pain levels were tolerable today.

Got some of my nearly-syrup on the stove (it's 1 degree shy of being syrup now), washed out the big unwieldy pan I use for the first boil, and got two more gallons of sap off the trees. Cleaned my pets' litterboxes, got one of the 50lb bales of hay for my buns up the stairs and into the house from my car. Ran out to catch some good stuff and put defenders in gyms in Pokemon Go. Fixed my front door so it'll stop swinging open in the wind, figured out why my sink was draining so slow and partially fixed that.

(Still wish I could think of something interesting to write though, for when I'm lying down to regroup between doing stuff.)

I've not had a headache all day! Or nausea. Still trying to decide what to eat.
