They're all like, "shut-UP, Mr. No Powers!"

Heh

Why should Bruce be the one who gets to have ways to take down everyone else, but no one else can h.ave the same control over him? Why is he special? Yes, contingency plans are good. No, they shouldn't be in control of only one person. Even though Bruce has no superpowers, I think he's given way too much power over the others and that itself could be dangerous.

I mean. Bruce would need special plans to take down most of the others. Most of the rest of the League's big hitters wouldn't need much more than a good shot to total him. They don't have plans because a) most of them aren't the type, and b) most of them don't really need them? If Superman or Martian Manhunter (for example) want Bruce on the ground or in it? They can track him down with x-ray vision or telepathy, and pound him into paste with super strength or fry him alive with heat-vision without much issue. The only thing Batman has over them is preparation. Without it he's a baseline human getting smeared across the landscape.

hmm this doesn't make sense to me, if he has contingency plans but goes evil, then he's evil bruce with contingency plans against the others, that's still a problem that their superpowers won't solve because he has contingency plans.

I think there was one story where everyone turned out to have plans for everyone else. The Flash’s plans were the least thought-out.

Also, in one of the games, Batman provides a contingency plan against himself.

Uh... that is an awful comparison. You already answered it yourself. Bruce gets to come up with plans like that because he has no superpowers. That is why he uses his money and resources to create complex plans. Those like Wonder Woman or Superman have super strength, they don't need contingency plans.

As usually with anything comics-based, it depends on the writer, but a lot of times it's less "How could you ever think you'd need to stop me" and more "Maybe we could have had a team meeting about this instead of you deciding to go on a series of bat-quests to find out the best way to kill all of us if we go rogue. Like, we all have at least one nemesis who already knows. We'd probably have told you just so you could come up with an antidote in case someone other than you kills us. Hell, we could even go the non-lethal route. I'm pretty sure Ma Kent actually kept some of that polka-dot kryptonite that turns Kryptonians into mime artists..."

According to trope site, this has happened at least once, in The Batman: "Batman gives each member weapons that simulate each Justice League member's weaknesses because aliens have invaded and copied their powers. They call him out on being so paranoid until Superman steps forwards and cites the time he was mind-controlled in a previous episode. "

Finding out your buddy has secret plans to murder or maim you if he decides you need to be murdered or maimed would feel like a pretty big betrayal, and Batman's contingency plans for dealing with his nominal friends are frequently a lot more brutal than his plans for dealing with actual villains. And it's not like Batman is immune to mind control, so hey, not only does your buddy seem more willing to kill you than he is to kill the fucking Joker, he's potentially one failed will save away from being puppeted into taking down half the Justice League.

Add to that the fact that contingency plans that rely solely on one person being able to activate them are seriously shitty contingency plans. If he was serious about wanting contingencies in case, say, Superman snaps or is mind-controlled into a worldwide rampage, he'd make sure other people in the Justice League knew about and could activate those contingencies. Maybe compartmentalize the information so no one other person knew how to take down everyone, but making sure there are backup people as well as backup plans is 101-level preparedness. Since he doesn't do that, like, ever, it comes off more like Batman being a paranoid, egotistical ass than Batman being properly prepared.

Anyone that knows Batman already knows he is paranoid and doesn't trust anyone except Alfred... like it's not a secret or twist. I don't get why people still get butthurt about that. It's pretty much the basis of his character.

Being the only one amongst the Justice League without superpowers he does have to consider the possibilities of someone going rogue or getting mind controlled... which DOES happen pretty often so it's not entirely paranoia.

"B-but what if Batman is the one that goes rogue?", he still doesn't have superpowers and is not as much of a threat as a murderous villain Superman. Writers being braindead and creatively stunted is a problem amongst all comic books, but Batman being paranoid should not be surprise to anyone. Whether it's justified or not depends on the arc.

Yeah, this is what bothers me - he's not willing to kill the Joker but he'd kill his teammates? Nah. This plot was done fairly well in the animated series where the contingency plans were serious but non-lethal, but in the comics it's always OTT.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I always wonder why everyone gets bent out of shape when that is kinda Batmans thing. He's got no superpowers so he has to have contingency plans. It's not even a matter of trust since in comics people turn evil for no reason or get mind controlled every Tuesday.

Question.

Are you expecting these comic book characters to act like actual adults?

Because from what I've seen, depending on the writer, they only act responsibly and/or rationally if it's convenient to the plot. Otherwise, they let their neuroses, insecurities, cultural differences, communications issues, and personal issues have free reign. (Though that can be said for a lot of characters, comic book or no.)

well there's that one strip where he doesn't have a contingency against jon (but damien probably does)! but there's also that strip where ra's al ghul uses all batman's contingencies lethally against the justice league, so them being mad is, uh, pretty understandable.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
On more than one occasion, Bruce's contingency plans blow up with consequences.

Not to the same extent as Stark or Richards, but still...

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think one of the issues is that Batman isn't always the best team player and a bit of a nosy sneak. So people get understandably concerned about whether he's going to leak someone's alien porn habits if he gets disgruntled.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on this one.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an idiot ball plot any way you look at it. Among other things, with the exception of Wondy and Supes, just about any member of the JLA can be taken out by any other super-powered member. Which means the only reason to have a secret contingency file on all of them is in case every member of the league except Bats turns against him. Which again, statistically speaking, probably means that actually Batman has turned evil and is going to systematically murder the rest of the superheroes, so...
