For me the defining characteristic of a Mary Sue is that she distorts the story around herself--becomes the focus of attention. This can be done by being an OMGhelplessmaiden!!1! or by being a "warrior 'Sue" where she kicks everyone's ass until the hero falls in love with her or agrees she's teh awesome. So yeah, there can be Mary Sues that aren't all Sparkle Princess.

Not having seen the film in question, I have no idea if the character in the secret IS a Mary Sue/canon 'Sue, mind you.

OMG, this has happened recently to me too on 2 separate occasions. Met 2 new people (through different friends), found out they like they same tv show/books as me and when I subtly tried to enquire about slash or even fandom in general I was filled with disappointment.

Both of them aren't into slash (although one person was more of an 'ew gross' camp than the other) and one only reads fics so that she can mentally insert herself into them.

Does it make me a bad person that I'm not as excited about being their friend now??? ESPECIALLY the 'ew gross' camp member :s

167. Is there a chance you could try writing somewhere that's not so intimidating? For example, is there a place for anonymous fiction, or "commentfic" in your fandom? Sometimes it helps if you can write short little things and see how people react to them. Or maybe you know one or two people who would be willing to read over your stuff before you published it?

I don't see any atrocious grammar mistakes in your secret, btw. (Except you should capitalize the word "English"--but that's the sort of thing a beta reader can catch for you.) You're probably a better writer than many people who speak English as their first language.

I say, go ahead and write! Write for yourself first, and then maybe you'll be brave enough to post it eventually. It's a lot of fun!
