I download fic as ePub files from AO3, partially to save them, but also because I can do exactly this. I can fix the annoying SPaG errors, change smut words that turn me off, etc.

The author doesn’t need to know, and it makes my reading much more enjoyable. I usually only put in the effort when the fic is quite good already.

Wait! Are you telling me you can edit ePub files as word docs? This whole. Fucking. Time. And here I've been just grabbing the PDF when I could have been editing to my heart's content T.T

Not as word docs. I use Calibre for organizing and editing my ePub docs. It’s more like editing in html, so slightly more annoying for formatting, but pretty easy for copy editing type things.

I must admit that I did this recently. I gave the fic a kudos and left a nice comment, but I also downloaded it and removed all instances of “the tall boy”, “the amber-eyed man”, and any mentions of luminous orbs. I’d never in a million years let the author know I did this because it’s just for my personal enjoyment.

...Wow, people are still using "luminous orbs"? XD

Not that I have any room to talk. I recently went back over some of my 20-year-old fic and edited it to replace most instances of "the larger man" and "the mage" and whatnot.

Lol It’s for a relatively new fandom, so yes, yes they are. I was rather surprised to read that all the characters had luminous orbs because I thought people had moved past writing stuff like that, but maybe the author was new or something. I definitely wrote shit like that for years before learning that it’s kinda weird and cliched.

Yeah, like I noted above, I am not without my own past writing sins, hahah. "Luminous orbs" though...

I mean, okay look - I started gaming in the 80s and so when I think of "luminous orbs" I think of the menu screen of Final Fantasy 1. :D Would never, ever have occurred to me that someone was referring to EYES. Why are they apparently glowing, unless this is X-Men fic and you're describing Cyclops? Why can you see the roundness of the entire eyeball? Whyyyyyyyyy did this ever occur to ONE writer, let alone many? :D

NAYRT--idk it always sounded like crappy romance novel level purple prose to me, I assume one or a few writers used it based on those and it spread from there.

Could be they're actually old but just haven't been involved for years.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with doing this for yourself, OP. It's not like anyone but you had to know and it's for your own enjoyment!

I did something similar once where i was sort of copy pasting each chapter and just completely (or mostly) rewriting it because the concept was amazing and drama filled and actually pretty ridiculous but I liked the story. The grammar however...and the all caps everywhere...i wonder how the fuck I read that story in the first place lmao

(Anonymous) 2021-06-15 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I do that all - the - time, OP. I can read and ignore the SPaG errors. But if I like a story well enough to reread (and rereading is a comfort zone for me), I paste to Word, fix the SPaG so that I can read comfortably without needing to ignore the irritations, then send it to my e-reader. It gives me comfort (making those changes is like knitting, for me) and doesn't hurt the author at all. So go ahead, and have fun!

If you're passionate about this, have you thought about offering your services to your fandom? If somebody asked me if they could show me how to improve my sentences and writing I would literally cry for joy. I want to know this stuff, I want to get better.

A friend of mine does something similar to this. She is currently rewriting a book she loved as a teenager/young adult to make it fit her tastes even more. The author has been dead since 1912, so he won't be complaining. She is doing this just for herself, will keep it all to herself, has a super tremendous amount of fun doing it and best of all, it has helped her endure the whole pandemic situation. Can't see anything wrong with this.

Oh, I do this too! I don’t see any problem with it, it’s not like anyone else is going to see it.
