It's not too uncommon really. I can remember Futurama did an episode with Bender as a god, who then later goes on to speak to Real God. Sometimes I feel some other shows go into an angle where the beauty of the cosmos is so dazzling and wonderful, how can one not feel a sense of direction and purpose to things? Feeling this way is not a bad thing by itself. This feeling of spirituality and oneness with the universe can be enjoyed by atheist and theist people alike, though some people don't know that. But yeah, intelligent design ruins true understanding of the universe and science, which I feel is sad and robs future spiritual feelings of joy and beauty.

What dumb logic. I'm not very familiar with ID, but there's a difference between theories of creation versus technology. It makes no difference if the Big Bang created the universe or God did, air-conditioners work either way.

Also, science fiction is FICTION. A lot of it is completely unscientific. Check out Neil deGrasse Tyson destroying various SF movies.

"Wait, you can't personally enjoy that!" is kind of a weird take. It's like saying you can't have pregnancy kinks unless you've ever had or at least want to have kids. Yeah, I get that science and creation go deeper than that, but I've seen Christians and Atheists play games about killing God or killing the devil, and neither took offense at what they were experiencing or thought, "I should apply this to my life somehow."

Let your friend worry about what goes on in their head. Maybe this is their safe way of seeing things from the other side.

I imagine it's just similar to fantasy, if there's any disconnect at all.

But also, those kind of religious people use cell phones, and the internet, and other technology. How does this differ from sci-fi?

I know it can be frustrating, but it's really not that out of the blue unusual.

Science fiction has very little to do with science. It's just fantasy with tech and space in place of magic and dragons

I agree about Creationism. It depends on what kind of ID you are talking about, though. There is a whole range of what that means. Sometimes it means old earth but no evolution. But sometimes it means evolution, just that there is a God who started the process and is in charge of it. And not every ID person thinks the God part has to be taught in science class as it isn't science.

I mean, I grew up an atheist and still enjoyed bible stories and Christian mythology as mythology (and boy was I surprised around age 13 when I found out that people really do believe it!) so I guess that's what people who don't believe in science get out of SF.

hmm, I think the stuff people read doesn't necessarily or decisively enter their everyday thinking, or their big picture thinking consciously as either reaffirming or conflicting. It may, but it doesn't necessarily have to. And tbh, I think it's a good idea for your fandom friend to be engaged with things that engage with testing, data, and the human frailties therein. Maybe they are slowly broadening their horizon.

Yeah it seems a lot more rampant now in more recent years; I see people complain about losing interest when they're not getting daily content frequently - and of course unless there's a follow up movie, movie fandoms are definitely the first ones to go.

What is the last thing you watched or read and really enjoyed?

I found this sketch show called Baronness Von Sketch Show this week. It is similar to other ones, except that it stars 4 women and is very women-centric. There is a lot of mocking gender stereotypes and the things women regularly have to deal with. And it is really funny.
