Diversify what I eat

(Anonymous) 2021-07-18 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I need to diversify what I eat. I am going to start working on lunch. For the past 5+ weeks, I've eaten the same meal for lunch (pb&J, oranges, cheeze its [yes I am an adult]). I have access to a microwave at work but no fridge (I use a lunch box with freezer packs).

Looking for ideas of stuff I can easily bring to lunch.

Houmous sandwiches maybe? One of the things I like to do is toast a pita bread, put houmous in it, put a spicy sauce on top and then microwave it until the sauce is either gel like or flaky (depending on the ingredients) and hopefully the houmous will at least be partly crumbly in texture. Ofc, if you don't like this you can still eat it as is!
I've found that rougher houmouses work better with the microwave technique, so don't use it on higher quality ones. It won't be as nice as a cheaper one OR as it is originally.
And I've found houmous in pita bread, whether cooked like this ahead of time, or not cooked, lasts pretty well in my packed lunches (I'm a gardener and I work places with neither fridge nor microwave).

Second the hummus and pita suggestion. It keeps well ahead of time.

Hmm, do you have a brand you enjoy? I've tried a couple types but never enjoyed them.

Do you have anything you can't or won't eat?

I make sandwiches on whole wheat bread with tomatoes, provolone, grated carrot, alfalfa sprouts, avocado, fake bacon, lettuce, mustard, and mayo, and they hold up pretty well (and you can just do a BLT.) And since I don't eat meat tuna or chicken salad sandwiches aren't options but if they are for you, just bring a loaf of bread and a container of salad.

If you have or can bring a toaster, naan or flatbread is way better after a minute in the toaster, alongside hummus and baby carrots.

Some weeks I live off Trader Joes bean and cheese burritos and just bring some fresh salsa to go with. Their tabouli is pretty good and they do frozen Indian meals that are tasty but I get their stuff can be pricey too.

I live off soup in winter but unless you're in the southern hemisphere it's probably gazpacho rather than hot soup weather.

Olives and plain tomatoes (salsa is fine) are really the only things I hate. Though, I don't like most salad dressings.

My sis makes a killer fake chicken salad with Quorn roast, cranberries, mayo, celery, walnuts. It's excellent.

Individual salads (there are a ton of different kinds). I buy multipacks of lunch-sized bags of chips and cookies, and I make things like pulled bbq pork and chicken verde in my crockpot for sandwiches or to mix with rice and vegetables for bowls (I buy bags of mixed vegetables and roast them with whatever herbs I want). Sometimes I buy those individual frozen meals, there are usually some on sale whenever I'm at the store. Leftover pizza or takeout is always good. I do try to avoid things that are gonna stink up the break room when microwaved, like broccoli, fish, strong curries, etc.

I'd precook some sweet potato, black beans, leafy green. Put some tahini on it after reheating it. I've brought sweet potatoes and reheated them and they were fine but I might check for food safety if I were you.

Chili is always easy to make ahead and reheat.

I've done figs and goat cheese, drizzled with honey but it's kind of weird to eat it as a lunch.

Burritos are pretty okay if you toss em together in the morning.

I could do some more variety myself. I used to eat a really varied nutrient rich diet when I was dieting because it helps to eat you feel satiated but I'm out of the practice now. Too much mac and cheese lately!

Depends on what you like. I am a salad fiend, I eat 6 or 7 portions of leafy greens/salad items in one lunch alone. Usually I have it with bread and cheeses, eggs, falafel, or homous.

Something I've found recently and been working out so far is cold soba noodle dishes. Doesn't need to be hot and you can load up with whatever veggies or sauces you might have on hand / a craving for.

It kinda all depends on what you like, and your budget. You could go with some trail mix, a fruit, and cheese-and-meat on crackers one day, then some kind of soup and a pre-made, toasted sandwich that you just heat up a little, dinner leftovers (i do that a lot, saves on cooking), all kinds of stuff wrapped up in tortillas, pre-made salads of all kinds with crackers and maybe peanut butter to spread, or cheese.....

I dunno. I tend to eat the same few things over and over, just vary the ingredients - banana one day, grapes the next, applesauce.... like that.

Fruits are super easy to bring to work. You can pair them with things like peanut butter or cheeses (hard cheeses would do fine being unrefrigerated for a morning)

Chickpea, white bean, or beet salads with oil and vinegar would hold up well.

Charcuterie, aka fancy adult Lunchables: cured meats, summer sausage, various cheeses, chips/crackers, grapes, olives, pickles, nuts, hummus, raw vegetables, hard boiled eggs

Tortilla wrap ups: cream cheese smeared on a tortilla with lunch meat, cheese and whatever fillings you want (lettuce, spinach, arugula, strips of bell pepper, nothing too wet or it'll get soggy) rolled up and sliced into rounds.

Quesadillas: cheese/jalapeno, grilled chicken/cheese, mushroom/green onion/cheese

Onigiri/onigirazu: rice, seaweed and various fillings rolled into balls or molded into sandwich-ish shapes

Seconding Onigiri/onigirazu. You can fill them with anything but a favourite is the breaded pork cutlet type.
You could also try filled breadrolls like sausage rolls or pastries (like small puff pastry pies filled with spinach and feta).
Or fried rice - works both old and reheated.
Pasta salads or rice salads are great as well.

Has anyone else had trouble logging in to tumblr recently? It keeps rerouting me to the email entry page.

So weird, as soon as I saw this post, I went to tumblr and saw I had been logged out. But I was able to log back in, and stay that way.

Weight lifting beginner workouts

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Something easy to start?

Re: Weight lifting beginner workouts

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
bodyweight exercises. I apparently have deleted my bookmark that I was using but bodyweight was a good beginning place for me since I'm older and my joints are iffy - pushups, squats, etc, I was far more able to start there than with a barbell.

though I did also start with 5lb weights just doing basic as fuck curls and it really paid off, it was the easiest thing to do to show a result that made me eager to keep going. you don't visually see results for a long while otherwise and it's easy to get discouraged, but suns out guns out makes you feel like you're accomplishing something.

Most exercises involving an adjustable bench and dumbbells is not a bad way to start off of, though it does help immensely to start with a more knowledgeable partner or trainer for proper form just to form good habits. Dumbbell rows/kickback, dumbbell bench press, goblet squats, tricep extensions, bicep curl variations (switch it up) to name a few...

Reps/sets are largely dependent on if you want muscle for looks or muscle for work I guess. When I went often I usually did 3 sets per exercise and 7 reps per set (I wanted muscle gain so I went the heaviest I could). I think if you want muscles for work you increase set and rep but don't quote me on that I'm not entirely sure the whole thing isn't some bro science here but it did work with me so YMMV. It also depends on how much time you have and how many different exercises you go through.

An easy way to start is to also use the machines already there and follow the diagrams. They don't use as many muscle groups as free weights, but they do work.

If you plan on getting super into weight lifting, definitely finding someone more knowledgeable in lifting is a must because bad form can seriously fuck you up. I've seen so many terrible deadlift forms I fear for people's back.

Hi nonny! I lift weights at home, and personally I like the workouts from Muscle and Strength (muscleandstrength.com). They have workouts from beginner to advanced and there are workouts for bodyweight, dumbbells, and freeweights and gym machines. Keep in mind that you can use cans of food in place of dumbbells, and a set of 5- or 10-pound weights doesn't cost a lot. A membership at a gym like Planet Fitness is a great place to start and usually runs pretty cheap, month to month for membership rather than yearly and around 10 bucks a month.

Three days a week dumbbell workout: https://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/3-day-full-body-dumbbell-workout

8-week bodyweight workout:
https://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/8-week-muscle-building-bodyweight-workout

Another good beginner bodyweight workout:

These are just a few of the workouts offered, you can of course search the site and customize your workouts to suit you. Have fun!
