It's blindly obsequious to be grateful that someone simply took the time? Yeesh.

No. There are a handful of other fan translations who did a better job and were much more chill about it

So?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the ExR translation because it's a lot of work. But I'm really, really hoping the published version has a better quality translation.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This always makes me rolling eyes. Like, yes, the translation wasn't very elegant or great, especially not the way the main translator behaved liked she was this amazing translator who just couldn't bear to see others touch "her" novel(this, btw is why so many hate on the translation imo). But if you really thought it was an "unreadable mess" I question your reading skills/comprehension. (Also, you clearly haven't read any of the actually bad webnovel TLs...)

Was it an amazing TL? No. Would I want the actual paid TL to be like that one? No. Was it as bad as you and a lot of others pretend? Also, no.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhhh. I don't think it was an unreadable mess, but declaring that because YOU didn't think it was that bad that everyone who did must be faking their low opinion is a bit much.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying they're faking it, I'm saying if they really think this was an unreadable mess, their reading comprehension can't be that great.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You used the word "pretend". As in, "to speak and act so as to make it appear that something is the case when in fact it is not". If people sincerely believe the translation is bad, they're not pretending, they're simply expressing an opinion that differs from yours.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think AYRT meant for "pretend" to be taken literally. I'm pretty sure it was just turn if phrase.

I could be wrong tho.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*turn of phrase

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, it's what I meant.
To be fair though, OP also wasn't being as literal as I read it with the "unreadable mess" part so I'd say we're even lol.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I also didn't read OP's "unreadable mess" as literal, so I'm with you.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not the secret maker but I thought the ExR translation was an unreadable mess in the sense of "this is so clunky that it's emotionally painful to read" not "this is literally incoherent and I can't understand what it's saying".

Not technically unreadable in that I did actually read it all, and I'm very grateful it was available because it was still easier than sitting through a whole ass TV show for me personally, but a slightly hyberbolic interpretation of "unreadable mess" seems perfectly reasonable to me. Especially if, like me, OP has a strong enough internal editor to be bothered by that kind of awkward flow that's endemic to mediocre translation.

Yeah, you hit it exactly. When I read fiction for fun I don't want to feel like I'm their beta reader scribbling notes in the margins. Professional editing is worth twice that cover price.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if this is what you mean but it's kinda strange to me when fans are super protective over a free fan translation of a work and think if you provide corrections or dare to criticize it, you're a bad person.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
If the translator acts like that sure. If other fans are criticising it in general it's obnoxious as hell. Providing corrections is a grey area where it really depends on whether those corrections are actually accurate.

The first time I was recced that translation the first mention of it on their website was a snitty post about how they were no longer translating the manga because 'we put in one joke panel and god your too sensitive we're taking it all down!'

Plus apparently complaining about other people translating bits and pieces of the novel without starting from the very first chapter and working all the way to the end?

Idk, everything I've seen about them screams high school dramatics

Yeah I know what you mean. I read it because they were the only group with a full translation at the time but a lot of their antics rubbed me the wrong way. Like, I know it's kind of an unwritten rule to not pick up a novel for translation while another group is still actively working on it but the way the lead translator acted (with this "This novel is my baby and I don't trust anyone else with it" attitude) kind of invited more/harsher criticism than it would have if she'd gone about it in a different way. Especially if the translations isn't as flawless as they like to think.

The thing with the manhua though... I kinda get it? They put in a XueXiao joke panel and antis lost their shit and sent them threats for it etc. so I understand why they dropped it after that.

In general though... the group got a lot of hate by self-proclaimed "anti fujoshis" who called them homophobic and fetishisers for translating wife as, you know, wife and stupid shit like that so I get a little defensive of them, even though I wasn't a huge fan of the translation and the group's theatrics myself.
