Media You Found Through Fandomsecrets

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been here about ten years, and I've been introduced to some pretty cool media through the secrets.

I watched Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 because someone posted a pretty intense secret about the dog spoiler thing and it peaked my interest. It's still one of my favorite shows! I also got really into Yume Nikki and Lobotomy Corporation because of secrets. I don't think I would ever come across those games otherwise.

I think I've said this before, but even though I've read L.M. Montgomery's other works, I hadn't actually read The Blue Castle until someone made a secret about how it was their favorite Montgomery novel. It's now one of my go-to comfort reads, so thanks, FS!

I've mentioned this before, and it's not so much that I *found* Tiger & Bunny through FS, because a couple of my friends had seen it and posted briefly saying it was good.

But the main impetus to watch it even though I hadn't watched any new anime for like 6-7 years was a secret here that made me go "...Okay, I need context for that screenshot because anime has not made me go 'lolwtf' like that since Getbackers."

I'd seen a couple of episodes before, but I started watching 9-1-1 during the pandemic after it was mentioned here.

I never really found any media through F!S but I think the memory of someone here mentioning Halt And Catch Fire a couple of times, years ago, helped spur me to check it out when I saw it on Netflix last year. Like, instead of it being basically invisible to me, it caught my eye because I thought, "That's the show with the interesting name that someone on F!S kept mentioning in a positive light a few years ago." Anyway, it turned out to be one of my favorite shows of all time, so...fuck yeah, thanks person who mentioned it several times years ago!

Also, the named user here (can't remember which one) who likes Pontypool helped nudge me into watching Pontypool. Admittedly, for this one 70% of the credit goes to my RL friend who is a horror movie buff and wanted to watch it with me. But my readiness to say, "Yeah, sure, let's watch it," and not vote for something else instead was probably thanks to whoever sometimes mentions it here whenever someone asks for good horror movies. (Which it definitely is.)

Let this comment be a testament to the value of talking about shit you like. Because people may rarely follow your recs outright, but said rec will probably stick in the back of their mind somewhere and may lead to them eventually giving said thing a chance at some point down the line. :)

I started watching SK8 the Infinity after seeing some secrets about it and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's just a super fun anime and I love the friendship between the two dudes.

When you say "dog" you mean the chimera, right?

I'm not sure I got into fandoms based on secrets but I'm regurlarly jotting down recs when then crop up in discussions threads. Oh the number of books sitting on my e-reader thanks to that...

Actually the weekend for me, since I'm only allowed to work limited hours and only had 4.5 left to work this morning...

And since then, it's been... very meh. I cleaned and rearranged my sick bunny's area because I think he's gotten the idea that he's supposed to use the puppy training pads since he can't get in and out of the litterbox very well. Made myself go for a walk around the trails despite feeling pretty weak and dizzy, and took pics of lots of lovely flowering things. And then I was an idiot and put too much peppermint oil in my coffee and my esophagus has been cramping up in agony ever since so I really didn't do anything else. :P

It is incredibly hot. I got my new masks and contacts in the mail so happy about that. I am currently stressing the hell out that they might shut down DC again before our vacation. DC isn't having many cases (and almost no deaths) but they seem to have a hair trigger for mandating thing.

Also, I bought the new Samsung watch. D: I hope I don't regret it.

Busy but good. I wrote the first post for the new blog for our work website, worked on several cases, listened to a CLE video during lunch, met with a couple new clients, and prepared for a couple meetings that are first thing tomorrow.

Now I'm sitting in bed reading, going to go to sleep soon.

Kinda okay. The second day of of school was less of a cluster fuck than the first day. I hope that tomorrow is even less of a shit fest and so on until we fall into a routine.

Walked to the neighborhood farmers market, got dinner from a grilled cheese specialized food truck, pre-ordered a hobbit themed 3D printed coke-can-cozy, and crashed asleep at 7pm.

Best day ever.

Those of you who watch Kdramas...

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only seen a handful of Cdramas myself, and it's both interesting and a little frustrating sometimes to deal with their weird quirks, tropes and other unexpected cultural stuff, for example:

* coughing blood
* self-sacrificing female characters who are expected to suffer for their love interests
* very poorly developed or limited female characters
* male leads who aren't exactly the greatest in their treatment of women

I'd love to hear some examples of what I might expect from Kdramas, if anyone can help!

I haven't watched a KDrama in ages, so my information is probably outdated, but there were always two guys that the MC had to choose between and she always picked the wrong one. There was the hot jerk who treated her like crap and the sweet guy who always supported her and the MC would always pick the hot jerk. It drove me crazy, especially when the narrative would suddenly turn the sweet guy into an asshole so the MC could run away in the arms of the hot jerk.

I feel like (most times) the female lead is fairly well developed as a character (depending on what show you're watching). There's always an element of pluckiness/keep working hard to them (I've found across the board). The lead tends to be a little bad ass & determined hard worker who grows through the progress of the show.

There's the fucking slow-mo three different angles of the same scene (usually a kiss, the guy grabbing the girl and looking into her eyes... intensely? menacingly? Etc etc) that shit gets me every time (and the occasional wall pinning out of no where like wtf is that, we're about to have some problems you come at me like that lol).

Usual jerk dude/men who have issues communicating (but this is common across all media).

I've only seen two historical ones, the rest were contemporary.

Historical ones:
Scarlet Heart Ryeo (my fave!)
Mr. Queen (although technically it's a dude who gets transported through time into the body of a queen)
The Scholar of the Night

Contemporary ones:
Oh My Venus! (Love this one)
Her Private Life
What's wrong with Secretary Kim?
My roommate is a Gumiho
And a few others. The ones I watch tend to be romantic comedy not very DRAMATIC.

As a complete aside, since it's Japanese dramas, I just want to share the beauty that is Dean Fujioka -- so for anyone interested in seeing his beautiful self walking around in the early 2000s fashion,i offer May I Blackmail You? (It's not particularly good, but the lead lady is sweet and generous and he just doesn't understand her kindness).

bosses hiting underlings in job settings
rich spoiled characters
kimchi
Romantic series tend to have Second Male Lead thingy.

Depends on genre really. The series are 16-20 ep. There are good and bad, same as cDramas. The old are always right and youths have to respect them is the one that bothers me a lot. Characters always have their phones and use it a lot on screen. Drinking.

I kinda prefer the sound of Chinese to Korean so I might watch cDramas subbed and kDramas dubbed.

Advice for traveling

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo a friend of mine is very adamant about going to Dallas, TX sometime around October.

Given the current concerns about delta and the general reopening for schools I have very high concerns about this since she is higher risk despite being fully vacc.

Since she is not American and would be flying in, I have fears of her ending up in hospital worse case scenario and having to deal with extravagant fees even with insurance. Added into the general worry is that she is meeting up with online friends she has never met irl before despite her being friends with the group for 4 years and multiple discord voicechats etc. Also she has never traveled on her own before.

If anyone that lives around the area can tell me how bad/alright it is and potential outlooks for the fall that would be great because I can only find very worrying articles about covid projections in the next few months alongside a bunch of ppl saying not to worry cause fully vacc. It's hard to parse how bad it is from both sides being so polarizing.

Also any advice on how to phrase my concerns without looking like I'm censuring her choices is good too.

Maybe purchasing travel insurance would help in case she did wind up in the hospital.
