What I question is why OP thinks "it's normal to know specific details about the genitalia of random people in public bathrooms."

Also, what's supposed to be the downside of kids going on puberty blockers with "hardly any screening." If someone gets on blockers and then decides they don't like it, they can, uh, stop. It's not hard.

There have been some reports of puberty blockers leading to infertility I think? Not that I personally think that's particularly horrible but it's not like it's completely devoid of potential side effects. You know, like most medication.

There are reports of just about every medication leading to infertility. Infertility is like cancer and heart disease in that it is a stock warning they slap on just about everything. There are so many possible causes of infertility that it is pointless to try and lay it at the door of just one thing anyway. Sounds more like someone went out shopping for a reason, and bootstrapped that argument onto it.

I'm confused? I don't think OP is objecting to those things themselves. I think OP is saying that those are the things JKR objects to. OP doesn't want to know details about the genitalia of people using public restrooms, but JKR's view of trans people is founded on things like that.

Just including trans people in the HP universe, in itself, wouldn't offend JKR, because that's not the way that JKR frames the debate. JKR frames the debate in a way where she claims to be totally accepting and tolerant of trans people *unless* they cross whatever red lines or violate whatever shibboleths she has in her head. Of course, the reality is that she's not actually accepting of trans people at all, and the red lines she has in her head are actually things that are just necessary for trans people to live their lives. But OP's point (as I understand it) is that, because JKR understands the debate in this way, including trans people in HP isn't intrinsically offensive to JKR unless they cross those red lines.

Hmm, maybe there's a disconnect because I wasn't seeing this as a genuine assessment of "how JKR perceives trans people" in the first place.

One of those red lines she's drawn in her head is, famously, "I can't accept when you say 'people who menstruate' instead of saying 'women'." If your HP fic includes a trans character who has (or, let's be real, who ever had) periods, and doesn't refer to them as a woman -- that's demonstrably all it takes to raise JKR's hackles.

i agree. she doesn't think she's transphobic (she has trans friends!), she thinks that the concept of trans people is a threat, not the people themselves. you know, trans women aren't predators.... but if you let trans women into women's bathrooms you invite men as well and we can't sacrifice the safety of cis women for this. adult trans men are valid... but poor widdle teenage girls should not have access to hormones because what if they confuse how much it sucks to be a woman with wanting to be a man :/

I don't see where OP disagrees with that. OP seems to just be stating that unless done in a specific way, merely "including trans people in Harry Potter" isn't actually going against what JKR believes.

The secret seems to be more about the effectiveness of this as a strategy, than whether JKR is a bigot or not (she is one).

But she's established that when you're taking polyjuice, you retain your gender, which is why Hermione is still she/her when she's polyjuiced into Harry. Also I hate that I know this ugh.

That's because those characters would have no actual character traits anymore if you took away their being trans like that. Because they're just gotchas.

I think it's more about the fic writers than JKR.

I do agree that she has specific sticking points. However, I'm not sure anyone writing Harry Potter fic really would have much of an impact on JKR, whether they included a trans character using the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity (or anything else that JKR has a documented issue with) or not. I guess she could happen across it or someone could bring it up in an interview, I don't know.

Anyway, I think it is more about the writers making themselves feel better. Like, someone might not care if you call them a jerk and might if you called them an asshole, but if you're doing either someplace where that person isn't likely to be or hear about it, then its mostly for you.

Considering that ever since JK had achieved success with Harry potter, she has desperately been trying to move on from HP in other areas of writing only to have it all fail terribly. I don't think she really cares about Harry Potter beyond the the next paycheck she gets - if she even cares at all about being a 'successful writer' in anything beyond Harry Potter, I'm pretty sure that's a ship sailed past long ago. Terfs only support her out of spite (which will only go so far before they find new blood to support in their endeavors, leaving her talentless ass behind) while everyone else will pretty much just straight up avoid her works, or just stick to her one-hit wonder of a series.

A polished turd is still a turd; her writing post-ending HP has just been one shitty mess after another. Sadly her lack of success for her more adult works won't hurt her wallet - but until she pulls an Anne Rice on the HP fandom, at least she can't make coin from free fandom content.

JKR doesn't publicly hate the *existence* of trans people """""just"""" the *rights* of trans people. So if we want to stick it to her we should make sure our trans characters have and exercise their rights. (And also support the rights of real life humans but hey we're talking fanfiction.)

I know the "kids under puberty blockers obtained with hardly screening at all" is, in theory, to piss JKR off, but I wonder why would a wizard need to use "muggle medicine", like when people use the "if Lily Potter did abort Harry, who would have beaten Voldemort?", because: she wanted Harry and if the pregnancy had any problem, she wouldn't have gone to NHS (and they tend to forget that was Neville Longbottom who defeated Voldemort after to kill Nagini).
